The Painted Burro Ratings and Reviews
A busy vibrant spot in Davis Square--reasonably priced, good Mexican food. You know it is good when the restaurant is full on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. That said, it is a tad noisy; but fortunately there is no loud music blaring on top of the animated conversations. I'd definitely recommend it and go again.
This place would be great if you just want dinner and one drink with your dinner. We were 10 minutes late for our reservation, so we ordered our appetizers with dinner to make up the time. Despite our server asking us if we wanted more drinks and dessert (which we didn't get), and answering "no" to us asking if they needed us to hurry up, the hostess came up and passively aggressively told us that someone was waiting 15 minutes for our table- we didn't have to leave, but they just wanted us to know. Maybe it wouldn't have been a problem if the food took less time to come out, but there was no way we could have ordered an appetizer, dinner and dessert in the allotted 1 hour and 15 minutes (again, we were late so we had one hour). I would have completely understood if they didn't seat us- we were late- or didn't keep offering us food and drinks. Instead we wasted money on a rushed dinner and half completed drinks. Server was super nice, but everyone else we interacted with was very rude. I can see why they don't care if they have some unhappy customers- food was good and it was crowded. But it was an overall unpleasant experience.
My family loves the Painted Burro. The food is a step up from your basic Mexican fare and it's always delicious and fresh. The wait staff is very friendly and helpful. My kids have food allergies and both the wait staff and manager are very careful to prepare their food with their safety in mind. I especially appreciate that!
Really great experience and a first time visit. Server was great and friendly, lively energetic environment... Great food, cocktail and speciality menus... Dynamite food... Great support staff, back-waiters, bussers, etc; very attentive and all over the table in a good way - Non intrusive at all.
Went here for Mother's day with my wife and kids for Brunch. Great food and service and brunch was excellent with good cocktail list (had the sangria and bloody mary) - My wife and I had the huevos ranchos and eggs benedict. Painted Burro had a kids menu that was simple with french toast and scrambled eggs and bacon which my kids enjoyed. Waitress was nice and attentive and gave extra servings of fruit for the kids. It was fairly busy and energetic crowd but end of our meal our waitress was less attentive and took a while to get our check but overall it was a good experience and i would highly recommend it for brunch.
I feel weird even writing a review because I go to the painted burro so much. Their brunch is amazing, their margaritas are amazing, their food is amazing. I do wish they had more vegetarian options but they do have a couple. Not much vegan but it's hard to expect that from Mexican. the decor is also really cool. Highly recommend!
I have been to The Painted Burro multiple times for dinner and drinks but this was my first brunch experience and my entire party was so impressed. I think brunch turns out to be a much better value than dinner and the food was AMAZING. I would highly recommend this place but definitely make a reservation if you come here for brunch on the weekend. We had a party of 6 and were able to make reservations that morning and were glad we did, as there would definitely have been a wait otherwise. Thanks for the great food and fancy morning cocktails, Painted Burro!
The service and ambiance of this restaurant were very good. The menu looked promising but unfotunately I was underwhelmed by the food (I thought it was bland, even though the seasoning was visible), and the margarita was unbalanced (too sour). In fairness, the server did notice that I made a face when I tried my drink and I explained that it was really sour. She offered to have to the bartender add some more triple sec but I declined as I was worried it would come back too sweet.
Had a great time at dinner for my wife's birthday. The service was a bit slow - but it was jam-packed on a Friday night, so it was expected. If you're not in a rush, what you'll find is great food and drinks. We had margaritas and nachos to start. Some of the best nachos I've ever had. They were so delicious, we ate the whole plate and didn't have room for dinner entrees! But we always save room for dessert. We had churros with ice cream - and it was amazing. Our server was really great throughout - giving us recommendations and answering all of our questions. We'll be back - and soon!
Service was great and attentive. Food was fair, somewhat bland/flavorless, especially for a Mexican restaurant and considering the prices. May try one more time to see if it was what I ordered that was off the mark or if it their food overall that misses. But I won't be running back anytime soon. The appeal of this restaurant is their location in the heart of Davis Square, more than anything.
Ridiculously delicious tacos. On a Thursday night it's loud and hard to hear. Hostess seemed to think I didn't have a reservation even after showing her the open table confirmation on my phone, but she was able to get us in quickly anyway which I appreciated. We had the queso poblano fundido as an app and I would come back just for that alone. Our server was great as well. Solid date night choice!
I attended a family brunch with my in-laws at the Painted Burro in February and had a great experience so I booked it for my own family get-together Sunday. The downside is we were seated at a high top table (with my aunt in her 70s) by open windows. Brrr. After I complained, the managers talked about juggling things to switch us to a lower table, but my family told me to be quiet and stop complaining so we stayed at the high top. I regretted that when we had to add an extra chair - and it was a stool. We were probably customers non grata anyway because several of my family members straggled in late. My dish of huevos rancheros was served on the lukewarm, coolish side - not like my nice hot meal in February. But I'd give it another shot in the future because my first experience was very good. And my family had a good time - nobody tried to rush us out of there despite our late start.
