The Owl at Hawnby
Peek through the windows to see roaring fires and step into a bar that smells of crackling wood and whispers of bonhomie. Somewhere that welcomes locals and dog walkers as well as weekenders who love their food.
The award winning Owl specialises in home-smoked goodies – bacon, sausages and all manner of charcuterie. They serve up fresh local food that comes from a few miles of the inn, local game, meat and organic produce from their kitchen garden.
Daily deliveries of seafood arrive and the menu includes offers of Lindisfarne oysters, mussels and Whitby lobster and crab.
Davide and his team do their own butchery and the steaks are large, succulent and cooked to your liking.

It’s well worth a visit for Sunday lunch too. The Yorkshire puds are whoppers and meat – pork loin, rump of beef – are cooked to perfection and packed with so much flavour.

Despite accepting our reservation for a table for 5 on Sunday at 1:30pm you were closed. A wasted journey for us and we won’t be returning.

Why we were not told that this restaurant is actually closed for business? Received a reminder from OpenTable the day before our reservation with no indication it was closed! Turned up in time for our table only to find the whole place closed for business! Not happy.

Booked online, drove for an hour to Hawnby to find the Owl closed, how can it be shut and you can still book online. Complete waste of time and fuel.

The owner has been declared bankrupt and is in the process of being struck off. We booked on a late deal the night with a restaurant booking on line the night before arrival and didn’t find out the place was closed until arrival. There is a post from the liquidator on the back door to the kitchen. I hope that it can be bought out as we would really like to stay there. There’s a number to call on the front door for a chap who lives across the way. Thankfully we were able to get a full refund.

The Owl at Hawnby was closed on Monday 29 May but Open Table still took a booking for 7pm and confirmed it by email. We drove to The Owl to find it closed, not a soul in sight- just a sign outside to say Closed. The Owl owners should have closed the booking facility with Open Table to prevent the booking being allowed.

Booked a stay at The Owl for which I immediately received a confirmation email, along with a 2nd email asking if we’d also like to dine with them that evening, which sounded nice so I booked that (via their website I might add) for 8pm. It was a 3hr drive to get there, for which we arrived at 6:30pm, to find out the pub has shut down. There was a number to call for accommodation booking, for which an incredibly rude man called Davide simply said there was nothing he could do. I questioned why I wasn’t informed, why this isn’t bannered on the website (or why the site is still live for that matter), why are they still taking reservations, etc, but all he could say was ‘there is nothing I can do’. There was nothing else in the area (or even close to the area) at short notice, so we had to drive home (another 3hrs) arriving back having had no dinner, a 6hr round trip and a complete waste of time & money. Unfortunately if they have ceased trading this review might not make any difference, but if they do reopen steer clear as their service towards customers is outrageous.
