The Oval Room Ratings and Reviews
I eat at the Oval Room once or twice a year. It is always quite good. The food preparation, the recipes, and flavors are reliably very good. The wine choices are very good. I take guests there for a reliably safe and delicious dining experience. Oddly though, even though the room was fairly empty, at least three members of the table staff kept reaching to our plates to take them away while one or the other of us was still eating. This happened twice during appetizers, three times during the entree, and again at dessert. It was odd and off-putting. When everyone’s fork and knife are placed at the 2 o’clock position, that’s your cue...or when I tell you.
Update: I received a phone call from the general manager apologizing for the miscommunications among the staff. Getting a phone call is a rarity and shows genuine concern about a customer’s experience. Even with the oddity in the service I still rated the dinner and experience an overall 4. No doubt I will return to the Oval Room and enjoy another well prepared and served meal.
One of the best meals I have ever had in DC; the menu was creative and the food lived up to or exceeded the vision. The fois gras, the scallops, the lobster all superbly prepared. The service was excellent and thought the meal was a reasonable value. We could not have enjoyed the dining experience more!
We went for a fixed Thanksgiving menu. It was a very nice luncheon, attentive and friendly service. The location feels like a place where political strategies are hatched. The food, though, was amazing! We enjoyed the afternoon out of the house. If you’re looking for a DC experience, go.
We have dined at Oval Room on a previous DC visit and enjoyed it. This time was just as good. We enjoyed a perfectly made cocktail, and not rushed. The salads were delicious as was the main course. I had the pasta and my husband had the salmon. We split a heavenly chocolate torte.
We thoroughly enjoyed an exceptional dining experience, including meal (steak and beet salad were perfection), wait staff (among best possible), attention to detail (superb), floor management (very accommodating and friendly). Now one of my favorite places to dine in DC area.
Delicious, well-prepared food - lovely presentation. My wife had the shrimp and grits dish - which was outstanding. The grits were incredibly creamy and filled with cheese, and the shrimp was cooked perfectly (I can attest to this because I had my share of bites). That being said, I did not neglect my own dish - the duck, which was so flavorful. The waiter knew how much I was enjoying my food because I kept saying 'MMMM' so loudly! What can I say? A man likes a good meal. My wife had to remind me to keep it down. What would I do without her?
Anyway, the service was outstanding too. We were treated well, and enjoyed the evening.
Restaurants have difficulty in maintaining high standards over an extended period of time. The Oval Room is an exception. Excellent food, impeccable service, reasonable prices, comfortable chairs. No pretentiousness, just attention to detail. A sound choice for a business lunch or to catch up with an old friend.
The food was well prepared and interesting (and tasty). The service was just about perfect. It was attentive without being intrusive. I did not feel that the staff had become part of our conversation, as is so often true in DC restaurants. I always enjoy dining there.
I thought the ambiance was too casual for what I expected. The noise level also was more than I wanted. The desserts are a disaster! I have never tasted worse. The main course of Yellow Fin Tuna and duck was delicious, but I will not go back to the restaurant again.
Excellent meal and wonderful service always. Perfect for a business lunch with attentive (but not intrusive) service, no rush, and interesting menu to add to the lunch or dinner conversation. Thanks to Oval Room management for making these arrangements work consistently.
The Oval Room never fails! Just had a wonderful dinner with a great waiter who recommended a terrific wine. Dining room is lovely: well-spaced tables, quiet, civilized, sophisticated. We can't understand why the restaurant was not busy--it should be packed!
I took two colleagues from China who had a terrible experience at a different restaurant on their own the night before. Due to language challenges, my party had a tough time with the menu, but the waiter was extremely patient with us and offered recommendations that were phenomenal.
Another fine restaurant of the Knightsbridge Restaurant Group. Across from our favorite (food-wise), The Bombay Club, The Oval Room has a superb location, and a charming atmosphere. And at least in this restaurant, as opposed to The Bombay Club, the clientele were appropriately dressed (one of my pet peeves about The Bombay Club is that they permit people totally inappropriately dressed to dine there; I mean shorts, flip-flops, etc.) But I digress. The food for two of us at The Oval Room was exceptional, but the lamb my husband ordered was stringy and overcooked. We will, however, go back to enjoy some more items on their (somewhat limited) menu.
This was our second visit in three weeks and once again it didn't disappoint. Everyones food was excellent: chicken liver pate with pecan granola and peach jam; Pan Roasted Hanger Steak
Black Garlic Soubise, Aleppo Crusted Potato Confit. Watercress, Fennel, Sherry Vinaigrette; Pan Roasted Amish Chicken Corn Pudding, Pickled Chanterelles, Baby Swiss Chard, Cornbread Croutons, Bacon Ravigote; and Wild Coho Salmon Charred Cucumbers, Moroccan Olives, Marinated Feta, Pearl Onions, Tzatziki Labneh. We shared a raspberry mousse that we didn't finish! Service was perfect. We were able to hold a conversation in normal voices.
Oval Room is an elegant and upscale fine dining option in downtown DC. Contemporary decor, white tablecloth, small dining rooms, comfortable dining environment, both in and outdoors. Food excellent overall, although desserts could be better. Service is outstanding. Pricey but not outrageously so, comparable to similar class restaurants in this area.
Usually very dependable. Perhaps because many people were on vacation. The service was inattentive and interminably slow. The restaurant was perhaps 30% full and yet it took forever to get our food. We were four people and ordered 3 salads and a linguine and yet it took over an hour to get our food. I had to ask for it after being quite frustrated. It felt as if the order had never gone in. We arrived at 1:15 and it was 2:50 by the time we finished. We were the only people left in the restaurant. My business guests were very unimpressed. I had to ask for the check two times and found our waitress playing bartender. Very inexplicable.
Our grandson, who lives and works in DC, picked this as the perfect place for dinner with his visiting grandparents! The ambiance was definitely "old school" as promised. The food was really delicious, the waiters attentive, and the noise level reasonable. My only criticism was that the low light level made it impossible for me to read the Restaurant Week menu with its light blue type! I am sure I embarrassed our grandson by pulling out my iPhone and turning on the flashlight, but that did avoid what was almost an error in ordering!
