The Oval Room

The staff was friendly and tried their best. The food arrived more cold than warm. They were nicely presented. The portions were not too big, what I appreciated a lot, because I don't like to be too full. The meat was very soft. For me the combinations of the different tastes (sauce to meat/chicken/lobster) didn't fit my personal taste not that much. But I think that this is subjective. I liked the wines the best.
I am always hesitant to give a mediocre review but The Oval Room came so highly recommend that I have to review it. The price fixe menu was boring. The cold amuse trio was pedestrian veggies beet, romaine and carrot prepared ahead of time ... the cream under the beautiful oyster over powered the salty perfection of the oyster. The room temperature sable fish was only saved by the lentils it sat on. Last, the semi frozen cheese cake tasted like Sara Lee.!!! The waiter was fabulous, the whiskey pour generous and the crusty bread delicious but we were very disappointed with the quality of the food.
Loved the preset menu with great choices and wine pairings - beautiful presentation, great service -
Good for meetings cause it is quiet. Expensive but too pricey compared to alternatives and excellent food. Great food presentation.
Overall, a good value for the money.
Outstanding, creative menu; amazing service; one of the city’s true gems!
It was a horrible experience. Our waiter was intoxicated and we had to alert the manager because he was incoherent and couldn't take our order. They then had the bartender become our waiter and service was slow and the order was incorrect once we received it. One of our guests didn't get their dish until the rest of the table was done. We had clients dining with us from out of town and it was extremely embarrassing. They did nothing to compensate for this horrendous dining experience except to comp a dessert. We were forced to be there an additional hour because of their incompetency and inadequacy and there were only two other tables dining that night. I would never recommend dining at the Oval Room again.
This was perfect for a date night. The restaurant week options were great. Adnan our server was knowledgable and very attentive. The rest of the staff was great as well.
Would definitely go back.
It was a most pleasant atmosphere and delicious food.
Couldn’t have asked for more
Excellent as always.
We went there for restaurant week and there were quite a few empty tables (due to the government shut down). Our appetizers were both delicious, especially the citrus cured trout. The chicken liver parfait with buttery toasted finger of toast was also excellent. My braised pork cheeks melted in my mouth. Fabulous. We waited quite a while between the first and scone courses and, although we did not complain, they bought us two complimentary glasses of wine. That is very unusual for restaurant week meals. The desserts, a blood orange tart and a chocolate cake were also beautiful and very tasty. Our waiter was ex Ellen's. I would definitely come again.
Restaurant Week. Love to go here for special ladies’s lunches.
Restaurant week lunch was an excellent value. Really enjoyed the skate wing.
Enjoyed Christmas Eve so much we've been back again already - this time we brought our friends. Fabulous service and great Restaurant Week menu. We all had the foie gras parfait - superb! Each of us also enjoyed our main dish just as much - venison, fluke, salmon, and beef as well as desserts - chocolate cake, orange cake and pannacotta. Wines were also delicious. Can't wait to go again!
My party and I had a fabulous pre-New Years meal. My only issue was the up until the evening of the event Lamb (my wife’s favorite), was on the menu. We were disappointed that there had been a change that took Lamb off the menu. In my opinion patrons should have been notified of the change in advance.
Wonderful. A perfect Christmas Eve dining experience!
Exceeded all expectations we could have had for our special Christmas Eve celebration. Impeccable service, delicious meal, comfortable and welcoming setting, low noise level. Highly recommend.
Oval Room is consistently great. Handsome setting, quiet enough so you can talk and hear the conversation, elegant food classically served. Nothing bad to say, and I always enjoy going there. In warm weather, the sidewalk tables are a perfect place for lunch or dinner.
Very good service. Excellent food. The space was open and the room was quiet.
Interesting lunch menu choices, good portion sizes. Salad was good but not to the same stellar standard as in the past. Service as usual was superb.
They do a very nice job. The staff is attentive and anxious to care of your needs. Parking has been found easily both times I've been there. The food is very good. Not too much, nor too little. It is always comfortable and not as crowded as some of the other places deeper in town. It's a go-to for me.
I went here for a working lunch. The food was amazing and the restaurant was quite which was perfect. My only complaint was our waiter. He just was not friendly. He did a fine job, but wasn’t engaging and didn’t even smile until he dropped off the check. Rude.
We went to The Oval Room for Thanksgiving dinner. We had to wait for a bit when we got there even though we had a reservation. The internet advertised the meal being between $31.00 - 50.00 per person however in reality it was $60.00 per person. With dinner and drinks our ticket was over $260.00! My daughter and husband were both happy with their meal while mine was mediocre at best. I wouldn’t go there again but it will be fun to talk about the experience for sure!
I gave the 5 stars because it is a very fine restaurant. The turkey was moist and tender. The gravy -savory. Cranberries - Devine. However 4.5 would be appropriate for the temperature of the food - Luke warm. For a classy restaurant the choice of dinner plate was odd. An oval. (nothing to do with its name) the platter would have been more appropriate for a diner. Granted there were lots of portions on the platter, but it was a turn off. In addition food is 90% visual. In my case the root vegetables were haphazardly strewn about the platter along with a cacophony of potatoes, stuffing, turkey, and cranberries. The wait staff was spread thin in my section which left unwanted dishes and giblets lingering long past their due. I ordered a cappuccino HOT. It came like warm and was send back. I know it was Thanksgiving with lots of diners. However this restaurant has been in business a long time and by now have holidays down to a precise science.
Went here for Thanksgiving $60 3-course meal.
Right away can tell they pay more attention to older richer people, because our service was slow and confusing. It wasn't even crowded. Messing up what we want and not caring. The food was so so, the price and size is just fancy wannabe. We left hungry and disappointed.
Very nice restaurant. Great food and service.
Going away lunch.
Always a fantastic experience!! Will be back next month
Very disappointing. Staff had no clue what they were doing and didn’t seem to work as a team at all. They were terribly distracting. Food was mediocre and not worth the money at all.
Not unexpectedly the menu was seasonal so they did not have the shrimp salad sandwich. I ordered the chicken burger which came with some form of potato, posing as fat fries. The potatoes were dry and tasteless. When I asked for ketchup, I was told they do not serve ketchup. Well, they better stop serving those potatoes! The burger was juicy with onion jam, but still would benefit from ketchup....
went for a light business lunch on the early side. service was excellent although waiter stumbled a bit when asked what the Oval Room signature dishes are. certainly by 1230 the place filled up and the noise level rose accordingly. want to go back for dinner.
Fantastic overall experience! Would highly recommend
They are a favorite for me when I am near the WH and K Street and have meetings with key stakeholders. Fabu
New to DC so thought we try the Oval Room. Unusual menu. Nouvelle cuisine, so smallish portions but delicious. Not sure we'd go back, but maybe. Service was lovely. Pretty room. Pricey.
The food was deliciously flavored beyond my expectations. The portions are extremely small so if you're thinking skip the appetizer because it may be too much food, Don't!
I'm still not sure if the bread they give is supposed to be burnt on the outside or not, but it is Not appealing or appetizing.
Our group all had the tasting menu, with WIne - the restuarant offers great flexibility in that you can choose 4 to 6 course and each person at the table can choose which courses they would like. We all opted for 5 courses, Very interestesting combinations of ingrediant and great wine pairings. Service was outstanding, although admittedly it seemed to be a quiet night there. Only diappointment was the fig dessert, which was not really what we expected. First visit to see our daughter at her new college and she chose, hopefully all future visits and picks will be just as good.
Very nice ambiance. Food portions were small, decent quality. Salmmon lunch entree not cooked well enough for my taste. Not sure if worth the price. With all the other food choices in the area, not sure I would visit here again.
Food was excellent and the service also very good. Wonderful to find a restaurant with minimal noise, a rarity these days. Only concern is that the prices were quite high, and we (a party of three) ended up with a bill of $200. Be prepared for that.
The food portions are small and the options are all a bit odd. I have eaten here many times, but I think it is now just not as impressive as it used to be. Dessert was a highlight of the meal.
The Service was excellent. The food was very good. The desserts were especially good and creative. The ambiance was also very nice. The waiter even put a candle on my friend's dessert for his birthday! Overall a very good experience.
