The Original Spence Cafe
Spence cafe has moved a few times. We’re glad we found the new location. We always enjoy the food and love the new outside area.
The food is INCREDIBLE!!! Don’t miss this gem. They are allergy aware. Great service. The outdoor seating is in the Back and it’s so cute and cozy!
Perfect spot for dinner before going to the theater. Our waitress made it a point to ask if we had tickets. My mushroom soup and soft shell crab app made a perfect meal.
Aside from the no fried Brie on the menu, this was probably the best dinner we had in West Chester in a long time.
This was our first visit to TOSC. We will be back. The service, provided by Chris, was wonderful, the hostess was so sweet and helpful. Our appetizers and entrees were excellent. I wish we had room for desert but alas, our bellies were full. We were delighted by the food, the service, the ambiance, everything.! It was a wonderful evening. Thank you!
We've been to Spence numerous times and they never, ever disappoint. Especially when bringing friends from out of the area there is full confidence they will enjoy a great meal and service.
Perhaps the best overall restaurant in West Chester. Our new go to place for out of town guests as well as ourselves. Toped off our 35th by exceeding our dining expectations 🤗
Friends in town
Another great meal at Spence celebrating a birthday!
Love the seasonal menu! The salmon and shrimp special was amazing
Food portions were large. Great specials. Will definitely be returning!
Superb as always!
The tuna tartar was exceptional tonight. And the way he prepared the soft shell crabs was fabulous.
The service was exceptional. The food was fantastic. I recommend the Halibut for sure. The dessert was a sea salt caramel ice cream sandwich. The cookie was oatmeal chocolate chip. It was huge. Highly recommend that tiny gem in town!
We visited for the first time for lunch and loved it! The food and service were fantastic and the outdoor patio was cute and cozy. (A little loud due to the exhaust fan but music was on and you got used to it, so no biggie!) we can’t wait to go back for dinner!
Great food. Our waitress was excellent as well. We will be back ! Thanks
Everything was great. I didn't notice on your wesite that there is a cork fee. Our friends do not drink so we were embarrassed when their half of the bill included the fee. Please have server mention to guests the cork fee.
The food was excellent and the service was wonderful. I had the halibut, others had the pork chops and the clam bake. Everyone loved their meals. Want to go back to try other items on the menu. Highly recommend this restaurant
Excellent BYOB in the heart of downtown West Chester. Food is superb and the ambiance and decor are lovely. Service was pleasant and helpful if occasionally slow. When the dining room is full, the noise level becomes somewhat bothersome. When weather permits, opt for the charming and quieter back patio.
Always a consistently great meal!
Great lunch. Excellent food
I love Spence Cafe - we've been there many times. It's a great place to grab dinner before a show at UpTown! On this occasion we were merely meeting friends that we hadn't seen in quite some time. The food and service was exceptional even with the large crowds of people (it was packed!). The only thing that impacted me was the noise level. It was so loud I was having difficulty hearing our conversation - and we were in a corner!
After hearing much about this West Chester restaurant, this was our first visit.
It will be one of many more as the food and the service was exceptional.
It is an intimate setting although a bit on the loud side.
The food portions were generous and mouthwatering. The tuna tartar appetizer was especially tasty with a hint of spice. And the braised short rib was the best I've had.
Had a delicious salad with a lovely warm piece of bread. Very nicely presented. Love the decor. I still think using ball jars as water glasses is a bit strange. Will definitely go back again.
An Outstanding dining experience!! Can’t say enough about the staff !! Made the evening just perfect in all aspects!! The Food was OVER THE TOP !! If you live in the West Chester Area IT’s A MUST for date night, Special Occasion or just “let’s go out for dinner” BYOB too !! So bring your favorite bottle with you !! Just ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Spence
The hostess immediately brought us a wine cooler for the bottle of white wine we had brought with us. I love that Spence is BYOB. The decor was elegant, and the service was about as perfect as it could be- attentive but not intrusive. The four of us each had a different main course and we all raves about the food. Not only was it delicious but hot food was served hot. Amazing! Sadly the Ambient noise was so loud that we stopped trying to have a table conversation. I don’t know how the staff deal with it. Because it was so loud we did not stay for dessert which was a shame as we were celebrating a birthday. I’d go there again but only on a quiet night if there I still such a thing at Spence cafe.
Everything was perfect. Will definitely go back to Spence Cafe.
Terrific restaurant, great food and service!
We ate at 6 pm on a Friday evening, so the restaurant was not crowded. We enjoy Spence because tables are not closely spaced, so you don’t have to overhear your neighbor’s conversations. We had pork belly appetizer, very good! Entrees were halibut & pot roast, generous portions & also very good. We will definitely be back!
Spence is now one of West Chester’s destination restaurants. The food is excellent with a wide variety of delicious menu choices to fit any palate. Chef Andrew Patten is doing some of the best cooking in the Philly suburbs. Our last visit found us enjoying salmon stuffed with crabmeat and perfectly cooked halibut after a wonderful salad and delicious plate of fresh cold seafood as starters. Our server, Ashley, was friendly and professional. Great meal.
I especially live the fish choices at Spence. Always fresh, light and delicious. They include lots if yummy veggies on the plate too. You don’t have to pay extra for your veggies like many other restaurants. We live Spence Cafe.
Chef outdid himself this time. A menu full of specials besides the regular menu. Let's start with the appetizers: Cold shellfish plate; shrimp, lump crab meat; and raw oysters was delicious. Everything was so fresh. Oysters Spence - one of our favorites. For our meals: Swordfish was excellant; Pecan encrusted chicken with mashed sweet potatoes was also a winner. Our server, Maggie was the best. We arrived at 6 PM, told her we were going to the 7:30 PM Jazz show at the theater, and she got us fed and out in time to make the show. Great place.
This was our first time visiting and will definitely be back. The Easter brunch selection was great and everything we tried was fantastic. We will definitely be back to try this place's regular menu. Service was excellent as well. Don't hesitate to give this place a try if you are in the West Chester area.
We have been to Spence Cafe several times with friends. This was a family dinner over the Easter weekend. It was the first time for our daughters who live in New York City. The meal was excellent, as it has been in all our other visits. We were seated in the back room that was well suited for conversation for our party of five. We like the BYOB aspect of Spence which lets us bring our own wine to enjoy.
We enjoyed everything about our evening @ the original Spence Cafe! The space was lovely, looking forward to going back in warmer weather and sitting outside:-)
The service was excellent! The food was wonderful, new different combinations with incredible flavors! All our entrees were perfectly presented and roasted veggies were perfectly al dente...who could ask for more?
Highly recommend this awesome BYOB in West Chester!!!
Outstanding food, service and atmosphere!!!
Very nice farm to table byob restaurant, fresh ingredients in a nice casual atmosphere. Four of us, two had starters, Caesar salad and a greek salad. Both were large enough to share so all sampled them. For entrees two of us had the pork chop, a wonderfully large and flavorful chop with mashed potatoes and some root vegetables. Another had the crab cakes and the short rib. Everyone thought the meals were very flavorful and had enough to take some home. Dessert was a flourless chocolate cake with ice cream, that was also shared. Great service, only one issue that was quirky. When I asked to substitute some brussel sprouts, which were on the special menu, for the mashed potatoes that came with the pork chop I was told they couldn't do that. It seemed strange but I just moved on, though in the end the meals were great. The byo makes it reasonably priced, and the noise level, though a little high, was tolerable
Our first time and the atmosphere, service and menu selections. We’re all excellent! We will be back to experience it again. Voted Top 2019 by Philadelphia Magazine and well deserved! 👍🏼👌🏻
Excellent food and service. We will be back again!
