About The Original Cottage Inn
The Original Cottage Inn restaurant opened its doors at 512 East William, Ann Arbor in 1948. This restaurant has had the distinction of being the first restaurant in Ann Arbor to serve pizza. The current ownership acquired the building at 512 E. William in 1961 and it remains the company's flagship today. The restaurant's first major expansion took place in 1975. The restaurant was remodeled again in 1980 and 1987. In 1993, a major renovation of the restaurant was done to include the second floor, which increased the seat capacity. This renovation also provided banquet room facilities. The restaurant offers a diverse menu of Italian and Greek dishes as well as pizzas.

The Original Cottage Inn Ratings and Reviews
I usually really like the original Cottage Inn, but they were off this week. We had occasion to eat their twice and in both cases the waitstaff were unattentive to the point of having to reask for things. Even drink requests after ordering took quite a while to deliver. Two people at our same table ordered the vegetarian sampler. One got a sampler, the other just spinach lasagna.
Food was tasty and high quality. Best of Cottage Inn pizza was quite tasty, plentiful topping great crust.
Went on a Sunday at usual dinner time; had a reservation so we were seated immediately. The pizza was excellent and the dinner entrees were almost as good. Eggplant was a bit overcooked but still tasty. It did get a little noisy when people with very young children arrived and were seated nearby, but that should be expected on a weekend.
We came to celebrate my wife’s birthday before we went to a hockey game at Yost. We got the pizza and salad for four. The salad was great as always. The pizza was also pretty good but it could have been cooked a little longer. The edges were great but a little underdone in the middle. We were in a little of a hurry to get to the hockey game and I asked if they did anything for birthdays. Most places give a free desert. Our server said they give a discount but the bill was already printed so he couldn’t do anything. Too bad.
The Original Cottage Inn is a dependable choice. We often come with a large group and everyone seems to find something they like. This time I had the minestrone soup and the meat sampler, which includes lasagne, meat ravioli, and manicotti. The food was properly prepared and tasted very good. Our friends who are vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free all found something to enjoy.
Our server was charming and very efficient. She made sure we got to our movie on time. She did manage to charge some of the alcoholic beverages to the wrong checks, but we decided to settle that among ourselves rather than taking time to have her correct the bills.
While I enjoy Cottage Inn - I have been to this location twice in 20 years. The rational - the kids in the loft area that have zero regard for the diners below. Our group of 4 was sitting in that area and could not hold a conversation due to the noise level of the (literally) screaming children. When our waiter was confronted about the noise level, we were disregarded and we were told that 'they will be here a while...' While I understand that there is a delicate line a restaurant can take with energic children, there are safety issues with the stairs and railing. Will not visit this location again, and probably will not support a franchaise that doesn't support all customers.
We went there to celebrate my friend's birthday. The food was great and the ambiance was very nice. However, I was very disappointed in the service. Our waiter was not attentive at all and when we asked a waiter to help take a picture for us, the waiter rudely replied "I'm busy - I cannot take a picture for you." However, apart from the service, everything was great.
The Original Cottage Inn is a reliable standby when we go out with friends. They have a very good happy hour and tasty Italian food. I ordered the meat sampler and my wife ordered the seafood trio; we both enjoyed our choices. And the clam chowder that came with both was delicious. Our waitress made sure our friends and we were done with the meal in plenty of time to get to our movie.
Always love coming home to Ann Arbor and being able to enjoy Cottage Inn Pizza! One suggestion, if possible try to not sit couples next to large family groups with young kids. We and an older couple couldn't seem to have a conversation, as we were sat by a very loud family. I know you are always crowded but sitting families in one area and couples in another, would make for a much better dinning experience for all! Thank you and we will always love Cottage Inn!
This is one of my father's favorite restaurants. So our family met for an early Father's Day celebration. We started with the Calamari Fritti. The peppers and the capers were an awesome addition.VERY generous portion. 2 of us had hand crafted cocktails using locally sourced ingredients...wonderful and generous pour. We all tasted each other's salads, pastas, and pizza. All fantastic! Portions large so take out boxes were in order. We all had a great time!
Several of our coffee cups had dried food on them and had to pick that off. Quite gross!
Also we were next to another huge party when the rest of the restaurant was not that busy. Could have separated the two large parties better. Had to assist the waitress because she couldn't get around the table because of the back staircase. As the customer we shouldn't have to hand dishes nor drinks down the table.
Lastly the table cloths were stained with a red sauce. Clean linen would have been appreciated.
Will definitely have to really think about going back with a large party.
Awful first impression for Easter Brunch. Stood in front of reception for - literally - five minutes as they (two young women) went over the seating charts for - literally - five minutes. I interrupted them and asked to check in and the reply was "oh, you haven't been helped?" They saw us walk in and go up to their reception table - of course we were waiting to check in. I'm not sure how you can look over a seating chart for five full minutes with a party waiting for help and not help them.
Our server was very nice and the brunch, as it is every Easter, was very good.
I went to the Original Cottage Inn with my daughter while visiting the University of Michigan. We had pizza and pasta, as well as clam chowder. Everything was excellent. The only negative was that our waiter did not seem to know he had our table and it took a while for someone to take our order. A manager did pick up on the error and came over to serve us. Despite that, I would have no reservations about coming back.
