The Olive Tree Cafe
Good atmosphere and lovely decor. Friendly welcoming and quick service. Food was okay but not the best value
Attending Comedy show in the club downstairs.
I met some friends. We were going to a comedy show nearby and wanted to get some good food pretty quickly. We ended up sharing the Mediterranean platter and the nachos which were delicious and filling (we actually ordered four things to share, but it was too much food!). The food was reasonable and very good.
Great experience dining at Olive Tree before Comedy Cellar. Food and drinks were very good and so was service. Manager greeted us after we were seated (lady with blonde hair) and our server was very personable. (I think his name was Dan). Nice to hang out in a chill Village dining room before the crowded Comedy Cellar experience. Well worth it to NOT have to wait in the check in line outside on a busy Saturday night. I highly recommend!
This is a great place right above the Comedy Cellar. The food is amazing and the prices are very reasonable for a NYC restaurant. We were on the standby list for the Comedy Cellar Show and it was great to be able to wait inside while eating and drinking. We went out right at 10:30 pm and got into the show. I definitely recommend The Olive Tree Cafe for dinner followed by the comedy show downstairs.
Nice little place above the comedy cellar. Got the chicken cutlet and it was absolutely amazing. I will definitely eat here every time i go back to the comedy cellar.
Amazing buffalo wings & mac & cheese . Love the chalkboard tables , super cool way to stay away from your phone while you wait for your food .
Loved the Olive Tree Cafe!! Delicious salads with added chicken!!! Burgers and fries were awesome as well.
Not expensive. Great service too- our waiter was awesome!!
The service and food was impeccable. Would recommend to friends.
Mediocre food, but cool atmosphere. Ray Romano walked in. Pretty cool.
The worst food I’ve had in three years in New York City. A college bar masquerading online as a nice restaurant.
Inexpensive menu prices with cool chalk tables. I went Saturday night and there was a great band!
We ate here for the sake of convenience, solely because we were attending a show at the comedy cellar. It was a happy surprise that we ended up having an outstanding meal. Some of the best lamb chops I've ever had. Not to be missed.
This place was perfect for what we wanted after going to see the jersey boys in Times Square. Sure it was a subway ride and 10-15mins of walking but we wanted some time in Grenwich Village with snacks and beers. We had Buffalo wings and they were superb and the beers were great so worthwhile the journey. However, they have a 3 drink rule which was a big surprise and being from the UK not in line with my expectations of continueing a late night out. Having said that our waiter was first class and he asked the manager if he could serve me a 4th drink and that was approved. We had always intended leaving around the time we left to go to another bar we had identified on-line so it wasnt such a big deal for us. They also have a very popular comedy club below the bar which you have to pre book on line. We didnt get into it but saw a few glimpses and it looked very good. I highly recommed this place but ensure their 3 drink rule fits your plans.
It is a great restaurant with delicious food and the perfect atmosphere. Also, there is a huge chance you will run into a famous comedian.
Great location, friendly service. Went with teenagers. Son had chicken tenders, daughter macaroni cheese and I had the market salad. Followed by cheesecake. All really delicious. Loved watching silent Charlie Chaplin film on the wall while waiting for food.
We had an excellent experience here. The decor is cozy and interesting. The Mediterranean food options were fabulous. I had the sampler plate and it was healthy and tasty. Service was very good also. One warning : the bathroom is down in the comedy club so it’s a bit odd to walk through there.
Great food, great vibes, cool folks. Highly recommended for a good evening out
we had an unfortunate night. It was our first visit, we were going to the Comedy Cellar after dinner. The Olive Tree had been a recommendation through the CC. It was a great place with good energy but some how our order was misplaced. our dinners did not come out together and not in time for us to actually eat them. We had to get to the show. the 3 bites of my strip steak was really great. My husband scarfed down 1/2 of his burger which was also very good. Our dinners ended up in togo boxes and our son took them home. If none of this would have happened the dinner would have been fantastic!
Had a lovely dinner for one there. The hostess was very nice. Was very happy that they played Charlie Chaplin on a projector. The steak was a little dry. Almost too done as i ordered a medium (specified pink but not raw) and recieved very little pink.
Came on a Saturday night before going to the Comedy Cellar. Food was great! One of our party even asked if they could make sure the pasta was cooked firmer, and the kitchen did a fantastic job. Did not expect live music, which drowned out a lot of our conversation, but the band was wonderful. Only problem was the service was rather slow, and our waiter seemed disgruntled by how much was going on, but we had plenty of time that night and it was well worth the wait.
Perfect place to grab a bite of decent mideastern food at a reasonable price in a nice atmosphere where you can hear yourself talk if you have other plans in nearby in the Village, like a movie or jazz club.
Wanted to get a quick bite for the Comedy Cellar show. Unfortunately, the service was horrible and therefore not worth the convenience. I'd eat elsewhere before the show.
I would go there again. Average food, reasonable prices. Loud.
Overall good. Very nice burger, but could update some selections a bit. Too many variations of the same salad. Other good, However is good for the price and the service is good. Had a show reservation and was accommodated quite nicely.
Great atmosphere, excellent service and taste food.
We had tickets for the Village Underground at 8pm so we ordered the roasted half chicken as soon as we got there (takes 25 mins). We ordered Hummus platter which was tasty and a spaghetti dish (it was fine) which we asked to come out as it was ready. By 7:45 the chicken still hadn’t arrived so we asked our server to wrap it to go so we didn’t miss the show.
Worst part was, our server neither warned us we may not get it in time, nor apologized when it took close to double the time expected.
Got home later that night and decided to tuck into the chicken and veg. I have never seen this, but the half chicken was actually the BACK half. We got two legs and thighs... no breast. Odd. Are they selling the breasts and wings in other dishes on the menu???
The dish was good. But I’d only order again if I could be sure it was coming with half of “all the parts”.
Bummer bc we visit the Comedy Cellar a lot and would be nice to eat upstairs from the show. Ah well.
Food, service and prices were great.. but eeeeeeveryone’s a comedian huh?
We love coming into the village from Westchester to see a comedy show and have dinner before at Olive Tree. It’s great food with a fair price. Not on the menu is the hot apple cider, which is amazing! Ask your waitress.
Don’t go the the cellar or the underground without having dinner at the Olive Tree. Hey, maybe Jim Norton will walk by and say hi or Colin Quinn will say “Excuse me, sweetheart” to your wife in the nicest way.
Food very good( service a bit slow. Great way to combine dinner with the comedy show.
For a casual, "quick eats" experience, and delicious meals, The Olive Tree is a staple eatery in the West Village. TOT is the sibling to The Comedy Cellar, and has a welcoming staff that includes meandering comedians. Slate tables make for a "chalk full of fun" and vintage movies while waiting for food, which there is rarely a long wait--but make reservations for the weekend. Basic Mediterranean/Americana fare is served very fresh in medium to large portions. I have eaten at TOT too numerous to count over the last few decades and I am always pleased with the quality of food. The drinks menu is well stacked too. Overall, TOT makes for a fun night out for dinner that is reasonably priced and well worth the experience.
Although my reservation was for a table for 6, my party wound up being 7 people. There were no tables when we arrived. We eventually were seated at a table for 4 and it was awful. There wasn't any room for the food.
Good service and food. Good value for being in Manhattan. Not too pricy. Nice spot to eat before the show. Staff was helpful with information about getting into the show afterwards.
We had tickets for a 7 p.m. show at Comedy Cellar, so we made a reservation at the Olive Tree Cafe for 5:45 p.m. We were delighted to enter a cozy, mellow space, with no loud music! We enjoyed some cocktails and "tuna nachos" - ahi tuna on crispy wantons with mango and seaweed salad - all very tasty. Beer is reasonably priced [for Manhattan]. An added convenience is that you can check in with the waiter, who will get your table/seat assignment for the show and then bring you down the back stairs to the Comedy Cellar. No waiting outside in line! Next time I go to the Comedy Cellar, I will also visit the Olive Tree Cafe.
This restaurant is on top of the comedy cellar. The point of the visit should be the show. If you are coming for the food, then you missed the point. The mezze platter is pretty acceptable. Mostly junk food apart from that. Silent films of Charlie Chaplin we’re playing on the wall, those were amazing. And the show downstairs hilarious.
Perfect place for pre or post Comedy Cellar show! Very reasonably priced and comfortable atmosphere.
Horrible experience. Rudeness and a complete cluster f over our reservation. Lentil soup was good but the ahi tuna was very fishy/mushy and the drinks took forever.
So disappointed! Haven’t been there in awhile but wanted to take friends to a favorite haunt for Mediterranean food. Much to our chagrin the menu changed. No lamb shish kabobs, no falafel, no tzatziki WHAT?!?!?!?. And worse, the chicken kebab was super dry. Won’t be back.
Great place, just what we needed - was pleasantly surprised by the ambience and we were all happy with our choice
