The Olive Tree Cafe
Upstairs from the Comedy Cellar - Great food, great drinks, silent movies, chalkboard tables, GREAT FUN!
Arrived at 4:30 for our 4:30 reservation but they were closed. At 4:35 we decided to go to another restaurant. Around 5:45 we walked by and they were open so we popped in to say hey we we had a reservation but you weren’t open. The response we received was “OK”. Not an apology or explanation just “OK”.
Always a great atmosphere to catch up with old friends. Menu more limited than in the past, but borscht, chicken wings and Middle East platter are still amazing.
great place. good idea to visit before going to the comedy cellar
Terrific food and the places serves as a green room, of sorts, for the Comedy Cellar, which means you are likely to see famous comics coming through
We were pleasantly surprised by the quality and portion size, both very good! The chicken kebab had a wonderful taste and the greek salad was excellent!
I love this place one of the few nyc old places that I like to go to once in a while the menu has changed a lot but it good I use to love going there for falafel a bit disappointed that it’s not on the menu but other than that I will give it a 5 star :) going there makes me feel 20 again 🥂 and the band was great !
Went for Valentine's Day and it was really nice -- not too too busy -- just busy enough and the food was very good along with good service -- I prefer a little less ice and sugar in my mixed drinks, but the Manhattan was pretty good too.
I had not been here for quite a few years, when we used to dine at the place fairly often. So glad they are still around after all these years. I came back with a former colleague, and we both loved it. The food - we had the Mediterranean platter and parmesan fries - was delicious and plentiful. One portion was more than enough to feed both of us. And the prices are absolutely reasonable by Manhattan standards. The ambience was really nice and as I remembered and cherished it, with a cosy atmosphere, the Charly Chaplin silent movies still playing on a large screen, and chalk on the slate tables for the creative. Great value for money. I'll make sure I won't stay away too long.
I only had a water and hummus but the hummus was excellent and the waitress was also very kind and attentive. I wish I caught her name.
Been going there since at least 2002, my favourite place altogether. The menu changed recently (~2 years, maybe?), but if you ask for old favourites like mozzarella sticks, they still make them.
Good job on starting to take reservations, too.
Since we had just arrived on a 16 hour flight from Hong Kong, we wanted to go to a crowded, lively restaurant. We lucked out because the manager did not realize Open Table was still taking reservations. We arrived at 9:45pm. The place was packed. We got drinks and waited at the bar 20 minutes. We got seated at a booth table in middle of the restaurant with a good view of the amazing live band with awesome singers and musicians. They had a great trombone player who performed two numbers with the band. This was the place for American food! The tasty buffalo wings were cooked to perfection! We had the Greek salad. It was the best! The made the most incredible couscous as a side with vegetables for the chicken kabob. We had the Kendall Jackson chardonnay. The food was great. We had planned to leave at 11:30 to go to another party but decided to stay to hear some more music from the band. We ordered another round and a tiramisu desert. The manager brought us a complementary glass of champagne for the count-down toast. This was a great restaurant nice staff and amazing food and drinks!
have always loved this spot in the village. but bring back the falafels and the smaller middle eastern platter please!!! Big one is too much for one person...
Food was delicious. One negative was the kitchen couldn’t get our food out at the same time. There were 3 of us and one had to wait.
Great food and service!! Will return!
The live music show was great as well as the service. The food could use some improvements.
Nice place, nothing special. Hummus plate was the best thing we got, it was fantastic!
It is a brilliant place to see standup comedians and have a great dinner before a set. Truly a great place. Staff was fast, food was great. A little noisy but awesome.
Ate before attending show downstairs. Had reservations for show and didn’t need to step out in the cold at all. Great place highly recommended.
Great location if you are going to the Comedy Cellar. Food ok nothing special.
Great atmosphere and great band! The service was a bit slow but the cafe was also really busy and I understand.
Best burger I’ve had in a while!
Great place to grab a bite. Started with a shared Middle Eastern platter with all the expected salads, grape leaves, and pita. Nice starter for our group of 6. We all had different types of main salads. Nice selection and variety to choose from. Drinks were fairly priced. Convenient pre-comedy club in a great location.
A friend and I wanted some healthy pre-theater fare....Well, not too healthy as we both also wanted a drink!
The waitress was very accommodating, as we asked her to take back our drinks to have the bartender add ingredients. We felt justified as the drinks were $14 and clearly seemed to lack a critical Triple Sec in the margarita and a Vermouth pass over in the Vodka Martini. The waitress and bartender cooperated and the drinks, though not spectacular, were better with the second go-round. The food on the other hand was terrific. I had the Middle Eastern platter with some of the best hummous and babaghanous EVER! My friend's Cobb Salad was really good, though she said the chicken was a bit dry. Overall, The Olive Tree really fit the bill and we would definitely go back!!
Good atmosphere and lovely decor. Friendly welcoming and quick service. Food was okay but not the best value
So much fun here! Always famous comedians hanging near the bar. Fun and lively. The borscht is excellent! Chicken cutlet with mashed potatoes very comforting. Service good. You can write on the slate tables with chalk so much fun! Love the food love the atmosphere!
Attending Comedy show in the club downstairs.
I met some friends. We were going to a comedy show nearby and wanted to get some good food pretty quickly. We ended up sharing the Mediterranean platter and the nachos which were delicious and filling (we actually ordered four things to share, but it was too much food!). The food was reasonable and very good.
Great experience dining at Olive Tree before Comedy Cellar. Food and drinks were very good and so was service. Manager greeted us after we were seated (lady with blonde hair) and our server was very personable. (I think his name was Dan). Nice to hang out in a chill Village dining room before the crowded Comedy Cellar experience. Well worth it to NOT have to wait in the check in line outside on a busy Saturday night. I highly recommend!
This is a great place right above the Comedy Cellar. The food is amazing and the prices are very reasonable for a NYC restaurant. We were on the standby list for the Comedy Cellar Show and it was great to be able to wait inside while eating and drinking. We went out right at 10:30 pm and got into the show. I definitely recommend The Olive Tree Cafe for dinner followed by the comedy show downstairs.
Nice little place above the comedy cellar. Got the chicken cutlet and it was absolutely amazing. I will definitely eat here every time i go back to the comedy cellar.
Amazing buffalo wings & mac & cheese . Love the chalkboard tables , super cool way to stay away from your phone while you wait for your food .
Loved the Olive Tree Cafe!! Delicious salads with added chicken!!! Burgers and fries were awesome as well.
Not expensive. Great service too- our waiter was awesome!!
The service and food was impeccable. Would recommend to friends.
Mediocre food, but cool atmosphere. Ray Romano walked in. Pretty cool.
The worst food I’ve had in three years in New York City. A college bar masquerading online as a nice restaurant.
Inexpensive menu prices with cool chalk tables. I went Saturday night and there was a great band!
We ate here for the sake of convenience, solely because we were attending a show at the comedy cellar. It was a happy surprise that we ended up having an outstanding meal. Some of the best lamb chops I've ever had. Not to be missed.
This place was perfect for what we wanted after going to see the jersey boys in Times Square. Sure it was a subway ride and 10-15mins of walking but we wanted some time in Grenwich Village with snacks and beers. We had Buffalo wings and they were superb and the beers were great so worthwhile the journey. However, they have a 3 drink rule which was a big surprise and being from the UK not in line with my expectations of continueing a late night out. Having said that our waiter was first class and he asked the manager if he could serve me a 4th drink and that was approved. We had always intended leaving around the time we left to go to another bar we had identified on-line so it wasnt such a big deal for us. They also have a very popular comedy club below the bar which you have to pre book on line. We didnt get into it but saw a few glimpses and it looked very good. I highly recommed this place but ensure their 3 drink rule fits your plans.
It is a great restaurant with delicious food and the perfect atmosphere. Also, there is a huge chance you will run into a famous comedian.
