We go to the Oak Room for most major occasions, today was the worst overall experience we have ever had there !!!!! We were seated promptly but everything was down hill from there. Service was terrible, we had to ask for everything and often twice. Food was awful, cold, tasteless and undesirable. The chef did a horrible job. Staff seemed poorly trained and inadequate. Our Christmas Day experience was an expensive, sad time. . This was not the lovely day of dining we anticipated. We will think twice before returning!!!!! We are extremely disappointed.
We decided to splurge on the Oak Room buffet ($60) for Christmas brunch. Based on its reputation for being the finest restaurant in Louisville, we obviously set our expectations too high. The food was beautifully presented and well prepared, although the buffet would have benefited from fewer meat and more vegetable choices. Thank you to the kitchen staff for its devoted work!
The service was a different story. The staff we encountered seemed to have little food service experience and probably none at all in an upscale restaurant. Simple things like replacing flatware when you take away the used pieces, knowing that there is a wine list, and ensuring the coffee you serve is hot, just seemed like no-brainers. To add insult to injury, an automatic 20% gratuity was added for our party of two. Really? On a buffet? The manager did adjust that to a discretionary amount. Naturally, we want to reward those who work on Christmas, but they need to at least show some effort. Staff seemed to be everywhere but they appeared lost...
Unfortunately, a piano sat empty in favor of tacky Christmas tunes from a speaker somewhere.
Maybe we'll give it another try next year.
We went to celebrate our 25th anniversary. We were married at the Seelbach and We wanted to return to “The scene of the crime”. The staff went out of their way to acknowledge our special day and the food was outstanding as was the service. Thank you to all the staff at the Oak Room for a wonderful evening.
We waited over 10 minutes for our waiter after being seated. I believe he was overwhelmed due to insufficient wait staff. We found the room beautiful, but uncomfortably cool. My wife needed her coat to be comfortable; she wasn't alone. We were asked if we wanted tap water or something else. My wife requested sparkling water and received Voss, which is nice, but not sparkling. We had to request napkins. Kitchen was very slow. I must dine gluten-free and my tuna tartar was delivered with bread. Upon it's return I enjoyed it very much. My wife's filet mignon was very good, properly cooked with tender vegetables and pan sauce. The menu specified yellow carrots and trumpet mushrooms. These were substituted with regular carrots and portobello mushrooms. I had the halibut, which was overcooked, served with a scant portion of vegetables, more like a garnish. All food was very elegant, but I found my portion insufficient; I left hungry. For the self-posted ratings and reviews, and the elegant and historic location, our expectations were much higher than what we received. The best thing we had was the bottle of champagne, properly served by the sommelier. Overall, we were disappointed with the experience and chagrined at the value we received. For less money we would get a lot more value at comparably priced restaurants elsewhere in Louisville.
Great dining experience ...very happy with the service
From the time we were seated the service was excellent. We were attended by not just our server but additionally by the Oakroom Manager and their sommelier to ensure our evening of dinning was to our satisfaction. It was especially helpful with the sommelier matching Oakroom wines for our main course. Although their visits were at random during our dinning experience, they never invaded our private venue for dinning. Our server inquired if our time was for an extended evening or a lesser period of time. Luckily for us it was for an extended time allowing us to dine and enjoy our own company for the evening. Our food was served with house surprises in between courses. The courses were prepared to our likening and plated in the most appetizing way. Each course was served with consideration for the selected food enhancing each serving as the evening progressed. Our overall experience exceeded expectations for the evening. It was our wedding anniversary and the staff made it special. The ambience of the Oakroom just added to our dinning experience.
We ate in the oak room on Thanksgiving Day. The seafood table was divine! Excellent variety and cocktail sauce was perfect. Crab claws fresh and perfectly done. Shrimp was sweet and tender. Mussels were excellent as well. The oysters were fresh and sweet. The salad table was well done. Choices of cheeses were excellent. The main entree table was good with the sweet potatoes being a winner tasting very light and a touch of citrus without being overly sweet. I missed having stuffing though. Yukon gold potatoes were an excellent choice for the mash potatoes. The service was good but just a tad bit slower compared to recent years. The bartender was excellent. She did a great job serving us drinks while we waited in the chair area. I was disappointed in not having live music. That has always been a delight at this dinner. The desserts were great with the candies taking front row. The red velvet cake was very light and tender , one of the best I have eaten. All and all it was a great dinner and it is appreciated that the staff gave up their thanksgiving so others would not have to cook.
Food was excellent! Atmosphere was enjoyable and the seats were very comfortable.

Another delicious meal at the Seelbach! Last time, I was here for the Father's Day champagne brunch (which I recommend you book weeks in advance)! This was a Friday evening date before the theatre. The service is polite, unobtrusive, but at-the-ready. All my needs were anticipated and accommodated. The meal was sumptuous, generous, and elegant. The chef obliged with a complimentary amuse bouche of onion cream soup and later with a green apple sorbet palate refresher between the appetizer and entree. The duck was the best I've ever had, although the dessert (dark chocolate with patio fruit) failed to impress. We were treated to complimentary bourbon balls and a velvet bag of signature coffee beans upon departure.
We enjoyed eating at the Oakroom before Actor's Theatre. We were the only patrons on Thursday evening until about 6:30 so the service was very good and it was very quiet. The staff was very welcoming and professional. We did not feel looked down on because we were using a coupon.
Service and food delivery was painfully painfully slow. Our dinner took three hours total. Our waiter told us he was plating our dinner and it ended up coming 25 minutes after that. One person in our party had a shellfish allergy and something she ate was cross contaminated even though they did try to be careful. She got ill and was not able to eat her dinner. We were still charged for everything she had even though restaurant was fully aware that she got very ill. Very very disappointing for a five star restaurant. Will absolutely not be back here ever again.

Firstly the Seelbach Hotel is phenomenal. We arrived early just to walk around and take in the history. The Oak Room wait staff was very attentive. We started with the asparagus soup which was just ok & the Seafood risotto which was amazing. We enjoyed all the little in between courses and our Manhattans. For dinner we had the lamb chops which were stellar and the filet was delicious and well paired with the squash. No room for dessert. Great meal overall but it is pricey. Especially the wine list.
While there was nothing necessarily "wrong" with our experience, nothing was so amazing that I would go out of our way to return. Food was good, staff was friendly (maybe a little "slower" than what we're accustomed to when fine dining), but over all we weren't blow away by Kentucky's only AAA Five Diamond restaurant.

We were married at the Seelbach in 2016 and made reservations for the Oakroom to celebrate our one year anniversary. As the Oakroom is the only 5 diamond-rated restaurant in Kentucky, we expected to be blown away. Our server was very kind, polite, and thoughtful, but service was rather disjointed. Another server brought us bread, but never butter. A wine list was provided, but no cocktail or liquor menu. When my husband ordered a bourbon the bartender didn't have, the bartender offered instead to pour a $30 dollar-per-pour bourbon without letting us know (and without seeing a list, of course). The Oakroom was rather empty, so one would expect impeccable, organized service. Our small plates to start with were fantastic and a great value, our entrees were beautifully presented, but my husband's fish was very bland and nothing unique. I don't think we will be dining here again with entrees at $40+.

The Oakroom is my go-to for any special occasion. The menu is always creative and expertly prepared and presented. The staff is always friendly but extremely professional.
Arrived 15 minutes early for the Mother's Day brunch buffet. They say us in a seating area with some cheese and crackers. Table was ready 20 mins late. Staff struggled to accommodate a 2yr old child giving her a coffee cup with a lid and no straw. I had to find someone to ask for a straw and got one that was extraordinarily long. Eventually found a straw. Staff asked if my wife wanted coffee to which she responded yes however coffee never came. Ended up getting the bill with the gratuity conveniently added in already. Service was not up to par with what was expected or paid for.
Mother's Day Grand buffet: service was slow and disappointing for one of under 55 restaurants in the USA with a AAA 5 diamond rating. When I have to ask repeatedly for water service, silverware refreshment, and coffee warming that is far below expectations. When a 20% auto gratuity was added to our table of 4, I was surprised to say the least given the sub-par service. Food was of a very high quality, decadent desserts, fabulous cheeses and charcuterie, choice of proteins was excellent although the prime rib and lamb were both well done, grouper was cooked very well. Omelette and waffle station were excellent. Seafood raw bar exceeded expectations with raw oysters, jumbo shrimp, and cracked snow crab claws. Smoked seafood was also excellent -not a detail missed on the "Grand Buffet". Support staff kept the buffet fully stocked and cleared tables quickly. Unfortunately our server was poor.
Not a 5 star experience, more like Golden Corral. We waited for over 30 minutes for a table, when finally seated we never had a server come to get drink orders or tell us about the buffet. We finally flagged down a hostess to get some water. The food was good with a couple exceptions; the prime rib was over cooked (all well done) and instead of Belgian waffles which they ran out of they served whole grain waffles which were hard and chewy.
Our used plates stacked up at the table until a bus person asked if they could be taken away. I called Monday and left a message with the restaurant manager but I'm still waiting for a response. Not The Oak Room's finest outing, and disappointing for a Mothers Day treat.
Fabulously elegant and decadent! Superb one-on-one service. Love the local flavors. Love the standards done with a twist (chocolate covered bacon!!).
The good and service were both excellent. We went for the royal brunch for mother's day and my wife was very very happy with everything! Our experience was amazing and will return!
Amazing brunch! It's expensive, but you will be hard pressed to find a better experience. Food selection was great, and the desserts were fabulous.
The Oakroom is a venerable Louisville venue, heck, Al Capone dined here back in the day. First off, hands down the food was outstanding, no question. We had a beetroot salad and a spinach salad, halibut as an entree and a desert. Problem was it was a fixed menu owing to the Kentucky Derby was the next day. This was not mentioned when we booked out reservation. There were only three entree choices, you were out of luck if you were a vegetarian. Then, the wine list had less than 20 choices. We ordered a 375ml bottle of 2010 Chateauneuf de Pape mistakenly. When it came to the table we realized our mistake and asked to see the winelist. The very helpful sommelier stated, "I have a full bottle in that price range though a 2012. OK, cool, then why wasn't it on the wine list?
The fixed menu was a salad, entree and desert for $95 each. Crazy price, even for Derby weekend and a terrible value despite the excellent halibut. But, the coup de grace was a mandatory 20% gratuity for a table of two. $360 later we had nice meal that was worth at most $175.
Been there, done that, next year when we come back for the Derby we'll try someplace else.

We had an amazing dinner. Food, service and atmosphere all excellent. Easily best in Louisville. Also loved visiting the secret room where Al Capone used to play cards - look for the two secret doors! So much history. All made for a very special evening.
Have dined with the folks at Oakroom/Seelbach in Louisville about once every six months the last 10 years. It is definitely not a place to eat every week as it's pricey. However, the service, the food, the presentation, the atmosphere is awesome. Louisville should be proud to have such a dining destination.
We've been to the Oakroom many times and they've never failed to fulfill every need perfectly. The flowers for my daughter were there, they all wished her a happy birthday, we even had the same waiter my late wife and I had during our last visit there. Afterwards, we were treated to a private tour of the historic hotel, an unexpected pleasure. For a memorable evening, you can't do better than the Oakroom.
The food was incredible with excellent variety. If you go make sure to try the duck crepes, seafood salad, and any of the selection of desserts that come in just the right sized portions.
The only cons in this review include having to wait one full hour after my reservation time before we were seated, the temperature in the main dining room was too low (but the auxiliary space used was too warm), and lastly cost person. It's expensive, yes, but as long as you bring an appetite you're fine.
We went to the Oakroom for Easter brunch which may have led to us submitting an average review at best; which I am sure would have been much different if we had gone there for a normal dining experience. When we checked-in for our reservation, there was a very long line of reservations before us that were still not seated. The check-in process seemed a little long and in some disarray. Then once we were called to be seated, we were seated in a lobby area outside of the main dining room which was disappointing. Since our visit was for Easter brunch, I am sure that the majority of the qualified wait staff were off that day as our server appeared to be untrained, confused at times, and not proactive in addressing our needs (we were never asked if we wanted to order another cocktail that we originally brought from the bar or if we wanted more coffee during the meal, and had to ask for more coffee 3-times). Still, the food was very good and the raw bar was excellent. I will give The Oakroom another chance during a normal restaurant seating and hope our experience is more fulfilling.
The Oakroom is always Fabulous. The Royal Easter Brunch lived up its name - it was suitable for royalty! We celebrate all our special occasions with an Oakroom Brunch - it's the best in town!
