The Norwich Inn
The Norwich Inn has a foundation that dates back to 1797 when Colonel Jasper Murdock served his first ale. Since 1797 the restaurant has constantly evolved to what it is today.
At The Norwich Inn, we view our food philosophy as a celebration of ingredients that are cherished in our community. We are a revitalization of food identity, culture, and authenticity. Our restaurant is not one concept, but rather a lifestyle, thus, we must constantly change in order to stay the same. We strive to create honest and wholesome experiences for each guest.
We feature an onsite brewery that focuses on handcrafted English ales.
What made this evening so special was the excellence in service - and enthusiasm in celebrating three birthdays. The food was phenomenal— and the atmosphere charming. Look forward to many more dinners.
Such a beautiful Inn. Highly recommend. Great versatile menu and great value! We went with out of town guests and everyone had a great meal!
Fabulous dinner. Love the ambiance. The Inn has been kept in amazing condition. The service and food were top notch. Would definitely return. Great for special occasions and quiet dinners.
We went for late brunch and were the last people there for the sitting, so it was peaceful & quiet. My food was good although it could have been a bit warmer. My wife's eggs were not cooked how she ordered them so she didn't eat them. Our waitress apologized but only a small token amount was taken off the bill. Service was okay, but the staff seemed more concerned about closing down for a break between the brunch & dunner serving times.
We'll try it again but probably at a different time of day.
Breakfast in an old dining room by the window. My wife and I enjoy the old NE feel. The eggs Benedict was perfect for me. My wife enjoyed the French toast. Relaxing, no rush breakfast.
Great dinner. Took visiting parents here because I knew it would be great food and service. It did not disappoint. Had excellent food and exceptional waitress.
Nice, friendly staff and food proportions generous. However, the salmon served "niçoise style" was a disappointment, however, and did not even resemble the photograph on its website. I would have liked to have seen this main course served with the traditional accompaniments of hard-boiled egg, green beans, tomatoes, niçoise olives, and anchovy fillets with an olive oil dressing. This version had only one tiny, slicedy olive, three or four green beans, one small potato quartered, and no hard-boiled egg, and while the salmon was served on a bed of mixed greens, they were made soggy by their swimming in a heavy, tomato-dominated stew. Too bad, as the salmon itself was grilled very well. Before continuing to keep this item on the menu, the chef might like to take a look at the classic recipe by Epicurious or Bon Appetit.
Lovely atmosphere. Our server went out of her way to accommodate our dietary needs. Food was very good, although the menu felt a bit limited. Desserts were delicious and memorable. Would happily return anytime.
Had the paella it was pretty tasteless.
The restaurant is very nice, upscale yet welcoming to families. The handmade chips were the best we've ever had. The alehouse porter and stout are our new favorite beer!
Superb brunch. Their Eggs Benedict were sumptuous. Two of us had their Benedicts. Then the other two had their Eggs Napoleon, which left us liking our fingers. Seriously good. The Mimosas were a great side... And strong and wonderful cappuccino for the coffee addict in us. Service was spotless.
Wonderful food and service, not 5 star but close.
We traveled from Essex Junction just to have dinner here, and it was totally worth the drive. Beautiful atmosphere, friendly service and delicious food. We will definitely be back this fall.
Love the Sunday night special of a standing rib roast, served with a baked potato (with sour cream and chives) and asparagus! It comes with a dessert of profiteroles with ice cream, although we usually ask for a whipped cream substitute. A real bargain! Their salads are always great, too, and we love that you can order samplers of any of the beers from the Norwich Inn's own microbrewery.
We got burgers because it looked like the only thing to trust on the menu. Their wine selection was not good. Dry whites and roses were very low budget and not good. They had just one IPA beer on the menu from the on-site brewery, which is what I was most looking forward too, but alas it was more of a malty lager than an IPA. I could hardly taste hops through the heavy malt. Not at all an IPA.
The menu options were varied and the quality of the food was very good. I like the makeover of the dining room -- though now it clashes a bit with the old fashioned Vermont waiting room.
The food at Norwich Inn was excellent from appetizer to dessert. The beer selection is solid and I was pleased that they offer a variety of beer beyond just IPAs. The mussels dish was quite generous, and the bread was delicious with a nice crumb.
Restaurant was a perfect for our family of 4. All our meals were amazing and everyone walked out happy and satisfied.
Great food and great service.
It was a Saturday. We arrived early. They were very accommodating. Food was very good. Service was VERY, VERY good. It was a very pleasant meal.
Food, service and ambiance was outstanding! Thank you for a very enjoyable dining experience!!
With the new chef in place the food is very good these days!
Food and service excellent. Enjoyed the beer and ambience of the Inn too.
Wonderful dining experience. Delicious food, excellent service, and reasonable cost.
Food was incredible, very relaxing enjoyable dinner. Will be back again.
Thumbs up to the Chef Scott.
This is my fourth stay at the Norwich Inn. The staff goes out of their way to welcome each guest. The Inn is very well run and very comfortable.
As guests of the Inn, it was natural to go to the dining room during our visit, and we were incredibly surprised at the experience--it was terrific! The ambiance is very casual/informal country and the service intensely attentive but not invasive. We went whole hog--appetizers, cocktails, salad, entrees, drinks with dinner, and dessert. The timing of each course was spot-on. We started with maple bacon chicken wings and the house-made pretzels. Salads were fresh and innovative in their ingredients. I had the potato gnocchi, getting it because I am a big fan of kale and sausage more, but it was TERRIFIC! My partner got the scallop special and was equally impressed. Portions are generous. The only misstep was the chocolate waffle--not fresh. The brewery on-site provided some tasty libations as well--get a flight. I think this place gives some other local establishments (like the restaurant at that glass blower down the road) a run for it's money!
The whole experience was amazing. Morgan our server was friendly and informative about the beers and the menu. She gave great suggestions for our entrees. The Parmesan risotto was phenomenal. It was perfectly seasoned. I couldn't stop eating it. It was a generous portion as well. My husband had the lamb special and felt it was the best lamb he has ever had. Chef Scott came out after dinner and we were able to express our gratitude for the exceptional meal. He also gave a suggestion for dessert which I ordered. The chocolate terrine was so good. It was a pleasant ending to an amazing experience. Thank you! The Norwich Inn is now on our short list of favorite restaurants. We will back soon!!
Birthday. We were seated right away. My food was ok. The pasta was raw. I was excited about vegetable ravioli
The menu was interesting without being complicated or trying too hard. The Inn is charming and has ambiance. The service is friendly and considerate.
Every time we’re in town we come in for a special dinner. Morgan was our waitress again and she is great. Food was excellent. Guests are friendly and there is so much history here.
Whether we sit on the front porch sipping our favorite beverage, hanging out in the pub for ann afternoon bite to eat or a special Valentines Dinner ( we celebrated 2 days late), we always feel welcome. Thank you Norwich Inn. 💕
This restaurant/inn has a space for every event. Friendly generous people make you feel at home and welcomed.
Great meal at this restaurant! We were greeted quickly and seated at our reserved table. The server was incredibly helpful in pointing us toward specials or items that she thought were spectacular. She was correct on every suggestion. Loved the menu in that you could have an amazing gourmet meal or just a burger. It was truly a pleasant night and the entire group had a great time. Thank you.
The servers we had were very attentive. One noticed that the lights in our area were very bright and offered to turn them down before even I noticed - but it was a huge improvement. I definitely felt well looked after.
The food was edible, though the farm burger was overcooked. Macaroni and cheese was fine. It was macaroni and cheese. Many other local establishments offer better food at the same price or less. It could have been made up for with a cozy country inn atmosphere, but...
The atmosphere in the dining room, which I think is a recent update, was not in keeping with a country inn. A lot of white, some gray painted brick with a few pine cones and fake candles. It felt like a chain hotel’s take on a modern winter motif - not what you’re looking for in terms of ambiance from a 130 year old country inn with a horse and carriage on the sign.
Our table for seven at Brunch hour made for a perfect get together before a show in Hanover. We felt welcomed, and enjoyed great service. When my wallet was found, they held it until I could return, holding it in their safe with my name on it.
The dinner was part of restaurant week, December 2018. The service and appetizers, main dishes and beers were excellent. We were not as overwhelmed with deserts. Overall, though, we would go there again. And maybe just to the Pub to enjoy their own brews.
We had a short amount of time, needing to leave for a show, and the waitperson was cheerful and attentive. She was also very responsive to a small complaint. She had described the side vegetable as consisting of string beans and asparagus. When it arrived there was only string beans. She remedied the situation immediately. Then, when my Open Table rewards credit would not process, she went ahead and deducted the amount from the bill, intending to resolve the problem with management instead of depriving me of the credit. I very much appreciated this customer-oriented attitude.
We had a great dinner- food was great. I got chicken, my husband got a burger. We had a great table. The wait staff was prompt and polite. The ambience is great with a fire going and very cozy.
Dinner was delicious. We had stuffed squash which was a delight. Pleasant selection of wines. Service extremely personal and friendly. We’ve already reserved a room for next fall!
We visited the Inn for Sunday brunch and enjoyed our meal. The main dishes were well-presented and flavorful. The mimosa was excellent, but the expresso was rather tame. Our server was warm, friendly, and helpful, but the service was rather slow because she was spread too thin. But we understood that restaurants in the area are having a lot of trouble finding enough workers. Also there's no need to hurry through a brunch. There was a rather noisy baby shower near us, so the people at our table had trouble hearing one another. Perhaps large groups need to separated from the regular brunch patrons.
