The Normal restaurant
Disappointing. Convenient location to the Gammage which we loved. When checking in we were told that their system with OpenTable wasn’t working and being very busy we would have to wait. Good news it wasn’t a long wait at all. We ordered a salad and two burgers bun less. It took almost 35 minutes for the salad to come at. We had to ask for extra dressing, not sure any was actually on the salad and that too took time. When ordering the burgers bun less we ask for them to come as served just hold the bun. When they brought the burger out it was alone on the plate. No lettuce, pickle, tomatoes, onions or sauce which it normally comes with. Again we had to wait. Burger was dry and cold at this point. It was also thin and not made in house. It did come with a small field of greens salad on the side in a small bowl, which was uneventful. Our server was sweet and nice, but the kitchen should never have served up the food that way and the server should have realized it wasn’t properly prepared. It could have been that our order wasn’t cookie cutter and they aren’t use to a special request. However just loosing the bun shouldn’t have been too difficult. Other orders that came by our table did look better. That being said not sure there was anything that we would rush back to try.
Ate in the bar area before a Broadway show at ASU Gammage. We were initially seated in the actual dining room but didn’t realize it was a fixed price menu with only 3 options. They happily moved us to the poolside bar/restaurant. Service was prompt, friendly waiter, and food came out fast & tasty. Would return. Also really convenient to the auditorium.
Our waiter was new so we tried to cut him some slack . But he got all parts of our order wrong . The were busy but not overly . The food was fair & lukewarm . It was not a great experience.
We made this reservation prior to a show at Gammage Theater. When we arrived, a guy said over his shoulder that he’d take care of us in a few minutes. After 15 minutes of not being seated, we sat at a free table. Eventually the waitress told us that they were pretty busy but did take a drink order and to make her work easier, we ordered dinner at the same time. The drinks came after about 20 minutes, but the food never arrived. We left after 1.25 hrs. The waitress was very apologetic and comped our drinks (which was nice). But we went to the show hungry. I’m not sure that this was a problem night or more of a normal thing. We won’t be going back again.
Website showed a different location 100 yards away. This restaurant is now located in a hotel. We walked in and it was seat yourself, even though we had made reservations with Open Table! The kitchen was backed up and slow, so they comped us chips and salsa. My meal came out and then my wife's came out 10 minutes later.
The restaurant has moved to a different location within the hotel and even though we had a reservation it was open seating. It took almost 30 minutes to get our food including chips and salsa. The manager came and checked in with us but instead of apologizing and providing some sort of compensation she just gave us excuses. One of our entrees was soup and the soup was crusted on top so it was clear that it had been sitting for quite a while even though it took 30 minutes to get our food. They still charged us for the soup even though I sent it back and told the manager that I no longer wanted soup. The server only took it off of our bill after I complained. Also, the entire time this all was happening, we could hear one of the bartenders complaining that she was tired of serving customers. We would have walked out sooner if we were not headed to a show at Gammage. Don't waste your time or money at this restaurant!
Food variety could be expanded with little effort. The employees were all very cordial and courteous. Heaters were very appreciated! We will return but for drinks and tapas, not for dinner.
The servers and management were wonderfully nice. However, it took way over 1/2 hour for me to get my food, and almost as long to get my bill. My hamburger was nice and warm, but so was my side salad. I assume both had been put under the heat lamps.
What happened to the menu?? Wish they hadn’t changed from a couple of years ago!
We have been coming here for a while to have a quick dinner before going to see a show at Gammage. Unfortunately, this month there is new management, a new menu, etc. and nothing was working. The food was overpriced and awful. It took 90 minutes to be served a crappy sandwich and crappy burger. We never got our drinks despite asking multiple times. This was so disappointing because this was a great spot before. For now, I recommending giving this place a hard pass.
We chose this restaurant because of it's proximity to ASU Gammage. Unfortunately, we were extremely disappointed. Although we were not expecting a "splendid" meal, the food quality here was sub par, and was quite overpriced. Next time, I think we'll bring our own sandwiches and 'tailgate'.
My husband and I both got sick after eating here. I am dairy and gluten intolerant and at first we thought I had gotten some dairy (butter from the grill) in my food; however, my husband got sick too. Not the best way to start an Ironman. In addition, we selected The Normal because the ad in the Ironman brochure emphasized gluten free options. When we got there we discovered that most of the "gluten free" options were prepared in a fryer also used with items containing gluten. One of the specials was advertised as "gluten free"; however, it was served on a flour tortilla. Clearly the chef has no idea of what gluten free means. That said, the staff was really nice and the wine, priced at $3 during Happy Hour, was wonderful.
Don’t waste your time at this restaurant. The service is terrible, the food is mediocre.
In town visiting and needed to catch a bite before heading to the airport. Restaurant wasn’t open and we were directed to the bar. Food was okay, don’t think we would eat there again if given a choice.
Didn’t expect it to be as good as it was. Quite a surprise but great food and friendly staff!
This is a hidden gem in Downtown Tempe to enjoy amazing, locally-sourced, Latinx-inspired food at a reasonable price by world-renowned restauranteurs in a very intimate and airy environment next to the pool. Al fresco dining is available out front and sometimes the upstairs dining is open to the public which has the only restaurant and bar patio with a view of ASU campus and the historic Maple Ash neighborhood. Parking is easy and free with Air Garage for guests. Great drink specials, happy hour, and drink selection. Get the guacamole! The chips and salsa are the most authentic in Tempe. There are even Pima grits on the menu and an excellent chia pudding. Ask for the ASU discounts and daily specials. The manager Jay is always willing to go the extra mile and is very familiar with the laid back Downtown Tempe lifestyle.
Went to the Normal prior to gammage matinee. Got the eggs Benedict. Ham was cold, breading was not English muffin and hollandaise sauce was approximately one tablespoon. Asked for more after flagging down our server who didn’t seem to be coming back (I never wave at a server normally). Got more and it tasted exactly like butter. Grossest misrepresentation of eggs Benedict ever. Had to flag server again for a coffee refill. Complained about eggs Benedict which they took off and then got the bill...price of regular coffee there is $3! Whoa! All we had was a coffee and my friend’s regular breakfast left after taking off the eggs Benedict and our bill was still $18. Overpriced, terrible service, terrible food. Absolutely not worth the convenience of being so close to gammage. Such a waste of prime location.
Great experience all around.
Decent food albeit small menu but very convenient if, like us, you are going to see something at Gammage
We were put outside and it was chilly out. The French fries were delicious!!!!
Fantastic place to get a bite before a show at Gammage. Cold beer, great food, and excellent service!
The music was so loud, it was difficult to have a conversation with the person sitting across from me.
Great place! Staff was friendly and attentive. Great food!
I've been to this restaurant when it was in the main restaurant. It was quaint and food was good. Now, it has moved into the bar of the hotel. It's totally cramped and loud. The greeter was rude. The waiter took our drink order and never came back. We finished our drinks and left. Very disappointing.
The food was delicious. Some of the best chilaquiles ever! Poached eggs cooked perfectly. The service was awesome despite being busy before an afternoon show. Great place, great food, great value.
Even though we had a reservation the guy who sat us didn’t care. We also found several hairs in our Bloody Marys.
They do not tell you when you book your reservation that you’ll actually end up sitting in the bar section not the restaurant. The bar section is cramped and noisy. Plus the staff while friendly is mediocre at best.
Great place to eat any day
A normal experience.
Great place for quick bites before a show at the Gammage. Great service and happy hour specials.
Great service, great food and very reasonable!
Tacos and salads are all made with fresh ingredients
The staff was super accommodating and friendly. Our food tasted great. We were having dinner before a Gammage show, so time mattered. We were finished with our dinner and dessert on time. I look forward to returning again.
This is really the only sit-down place near gammage but I really wish they would improve their staff. The food is good, but not amazing so the staff should at least be proficient.
Wonderful selection of food and fun casual atmosphere.
Wait staff friendly young college students!!
Easy parking and good location.
Great food but the service was terrible. Our food came out before dip and chips that we asked about twice. Asked three different servers for water and napkins.
Perfect for just before seeing a show at the Gammage. If you have dinner there you can park for free for the show. Street tacos were tasty and i expensive. Cocktails were overpriced, but the well drinks were reasonable.
Not great but not terrible either. Service was blah, which matched the food quality.
The Normal Restaurant is a fun place - but do not go if you are in a hurry. The drink service is incredibly slow - nearly 20 minutes for two glasses of Rose - and the table next to us cancelled their glass of Malbec and ordered a beer. However, the food is very good - much better this time than last time. Overall, things are improving. Note: the regular restaurant is "closed for the summer" and we were seated in what used to be the taco bar.
It was noisey but we ate in the bar. Restaurant had a private party. Loved the Happy Hour menu. It is a Hidden Little Bianco gem..
Service was good and the ambiance was nice. The food was just okay, but, affordable. We went for breakfast and I usually give a place better ratings on food when they take the time to make their home potatoes fresh. The places like this one that deep fry the breakfast potatoes get lower scores. But, they do make a very good gluten-free pancake.
