The Nickel Taphouse Ratings and Reviews
I usually like the food here. I ordered the mushroom “cheesesteak”. There was maybe a total of 2 mushrooms-sliced super thin with lots of onions on the bottom of the bread and lettuce and tomato. The mushroom filling should have been at least 3 x what it was! Very skimpy!
Four of us had dinner at Nickel Taphouse. The restaurant has an extensive draft beer menu and interesting food options. We started with deviled eggs with bacon jam as a starter. Then, we enjoyed beef on 'weck sandwiches and turkey burgers. Service was friendly and attentive.
Poor service...they didn’t seem to have enough wait staff. My friend and I had Lamberger‘s that were terrible and tasteless. Our sons had regular burgers that they seem to enjoy but it’s not hard to please a bunch of college kids when you take them out to dinner. The beer was excellent and I wish I enjoyed the food more because it had potential started out strong
Nickel Taphouse started out with a bang, but is seeming to fizzle lately. Prices are higher, food options are being more restrictive (no veggie burger?), and everything now comes with bacon. Maybe it should be called "Bacon Taphouse". Anyway, beer selection is decent but never seems to change. I hope they pull it out of the nosedive.
The menu did not disclose pork in the ingredients. Unfortunately the place is dark, with dark ceilings and dark wood furnishings. It was a few bites in before I realized the problem. Even the server had to go ask the kitchen about the contents of the dish, when it should have been known both explicitly on the menu and by the server. You don't put out high-end food like this and not be clear about meat on the menu. The server seemed apologetic but unconcerned. For some of us that's a show-stopper, a real reason not to return. It's unfortunate because the beer and drinks were good. And as a final kick, the server took my beer without asking, before I was finished. Another bad decision.
Go here if you want great food! Yes they have great liquor Don't know how they smoke kohlrabi to taste like bacon but you need to taste it in the carbonara pasta dish. Loved the soft shell crab with grill d veggies and peaches on blue corn grits. Though I did not see any of the promised grilled veggies on the dish the peaches made me not care. Inventive dishes that made my mouth sing. We were downtown for meetings and glad we ventured out for the food here.
I hope the locals cherish this place because it is a gem!
My wife's Salmon came out raw in the middle; just like jelly. I specifically told the waiter we do not like raw or even medium fish. We sent it back and got same result. Manager got involved and they used a new cut of salmon with same result.....raw. Finally gave up and ordered well done pork roast. It was good. Melon salad was huge pile of lettuce with minimal melon and no flavor....no nuts, bacon or anything like olives etc. My burger was pretty flavorless but I ate it and got out. All this for $75....not even an offer for desert or coffee for awful service and food. We won't return, and this was not our first visit....quite a way to spend a 25th anniversary!!!
start to finish: apps- mussels were tiny, sent back, ssauce was tasty though. buffalo brussel sprouts- if you like brussel sprouts dont get these, if you like mush slathered in rich too-spicy sauce then theyre a must have. entrees- soft crab was fair on a bed of blue corn grits which made the dish. crabcake was mostly filler, average at best but sent back @ $27, for sure didnt look like the picture. fries were good, hamburger good. mgmt deducted mussels and crabcake, thank you, that was nice (and fair). magmt was also gracious. decent, not too pricey, wine selection made it reasonable but still a disappoinment. wont go back, shouldve been a lot better on a saturday night
My wife and I have been to NTH about 12 times in the past few years. This was the first time that it disappointed. The server was very nice and reasonably knowledgeable, but the food was not up to the restaurant's usual high standard.
My wife and I made the same mistake of ordering the tomato salad. I expected that the restaurant would have had choice tomatoes (It's July. Vine ripened tomatoes should be available to restaurants now, even if they are from NC and VA, now...) but the tomatoes used were the quality one would expect in February. No flavor..., a little waxy. I'd like to try the salad, again, when MD tomatoes are in..., in a few weeks; the tomatoes used had no flavor. If I order it again in the next couple of months..., I will ask the server about the tomatoes (but one should be able to safely assume that salad won't be available if its ingredients are sub-standard.)
My wife's salmon was significantly underdone (had she mentioned it, I would have suggested she send it back). She brought it home and showed me. It was virtually raw, but very lightly broiled on its edges, basically it was like a hunk of sushi.
My charred Octopus was significantly more charred than usual (ratio of char to octopus a little too high) and the chickpea dish that accompanies it was over-salted. I was able to eat it, and had said nothing, but a table mate had the same entrée and he independently brought up that he felt it was too salty, and didn't finish his.
We have had a number of very good meals at NTH, so we will give the establishment another try. We were very disappointed as the restaurant had never failed to please us in the past and we had brought another couple that had never been there.
The host noticed something about our table when we first sat down that wasn't quite right and immediately re-sat us elsewhere. That was thoughtful! We ordered NTH Burgers, which were delicious, although I had to pass on a bunch of awesome-sounding items on the extensive and mouthwatering menu to appease my burger craving. The side of shoestring fries served with aioli was a perfect compliment. Beer choices were great, obviously. And service was excellent.
We had a delicious pre-birthday meal on Sunday night -- the place was not too busy so we could actually hear each other. The service was super -- attentive and polite without being obsequious. Food highlights were the soups (french onion and the special stew) and the mixed salad with lots of chick peas and dandelion greens. The burrata and fava pesto appetizer was also good, however, the strips of fried pig ear were inedible -- very hard and cold and impossible to chew. The staff comped us a dessert (blondie sundae) even though it was not my husband's actual birthday and it was delish. All around a great experience, and the service really impressed.
We went for Father's Day. Food was excellent and drinks were great. The restaurant was slow when we arrived but quickly filled up. Our waiter seemed almost pushy to get our dinner order in then seemed to get slammed with tables. Once we finally ordered we didn't see him again until we were ready for the check. Had he come back much earlier we probably would have ordered another round of drinks. I would recommend them for food but definitely not for service. They should work on their table sections so they don't slam their servers who then end up neglecting their customers.
1st time we sat in a regular table setting. Always sit at the bar. Danny takes well care of us at the bar including great conversation. Yesterday being Father's Day, really crowded. Still very good. Had oysters and Beef on Weck, more than I could eat at one tine. Oysters and Prosecco, what could be better.
