Went for brunch with a group of friends. We needed a convenient midtown location and this place looked good, plus Geoffrey Zakarian is a great chef. It was pretty quiet for a Sunday afternoon which was great for us. The food was ok. Not bad, but nothing special given the restaurant reviews, celebrity chef and prices. All of the dishes we ordered we could have gotten somewhere else and would have tasted the same. The main issue was the waitstaff. They forgot items, didn't know the menu well and couldn't answer questions, wouldn't come by to check on us or take a long time to come back with things (the place was essentially empty). Two of the same drink ordered came out differently, one was wrong and it was because they were out of an ingredient but didn't tell us until later. Overall a disappointing experience.
Service was poor. Server was not well versed in ingredients or allergens.
Lots to recommend but it is so loud I will likely not go back. Also, service was really slow. My estimate is service folks have far too many tables.
Service was fantastic! I can't say it enough - waiter was great!! Brunch was delicious. Never felt rushed.
The burger I ordered was overcooked and the fries were cold. If it was not a business lunch I would have sent it back
Steak tartar was delicious. Steak was bland, had no flavor except for sauce that was put over it. Came with oven roast potatoes, was suppose to be lyonaise. Salmon was good, small portion. Broth it was in seemed watered down. Wine by the glass was way overpriced, even for New York standards.
Burgers looked good coming out. If I go back would probably have a burger.
Service was ok, nothing special.
We only came here for breakfast. I liked the brasserie decor, and the service was very good. I had pancakes, which were enormous (not my favorite!) but still good, and my husband had an omelet. A nice place for a civilized brunch midtown.
Disappointing. Food and service were very average.
Very good good, excellent value for money.
Portions not too big, which is always tasteful
Great atmosphere. But pork was dry
Really, really loud and the tables were very close together. I felt like I was screaming at my colleague across the table. Otherwise, service, food and value were great.
Honestly every time I go to the National I find the service to be terrible, the room too loud to have a meaningful conversation and the tables too close to one another.
Despite its convenient location, I say skip it!
I like this restaurant, however i feel that their items ar slightly overpriced...but for the few times i go there i overlook that.
Food was fine, but nothing exceptional. Menu during brunch a bit of a hodgepodge - variants on traditional brunch food but with elements that seemed more lunchy than brunchy (more savory than sweet) and a limited selection of true lunch items.
Fine, but nothing special.
We actually struggled to find something of interest on the menu. Also prices were high for the choices. Tables are close together. Not so much a nice couples place for dinner - maybe better for business dinner or lunch. Although for a business lunch or dinner it would be hard to hear because of close seating and noise level. Our waiter was very good. Our food did come in a timely manner. We shared the Caesar salad. I thought the dressing was strong. My husband had the “ugly burger”. I had the meatballs from the starter menu and a side of Brussels sprouts. The food was not bad but not amazing. We didn’t leave hungry but wouldn’t choose to return with so many other great choices. We were staying at The Benjamin which is in the same building and it was a choice of convenience but disappointing.
Let me lead with the positive. We enjoyed the food and the ambience was terrific. I never leave reviews but I have to comment on the insane up charge for Grey Goose. While their cocktail menu listed drinks at $16-$17, a grey goose martini clocked in at over $22. ( before a tip). I spoke with the manager assuming there had to be an error in the bill, however not only did the manager assure me that was the price, he was rather mean in telling me that he would not do anything about the price simply because I didn’t like it. He said he would take my comment back to management but I sincerely doubt he would and so I leave this review. While he was not willing to adjust the price (or his attitude) I do get to vote with my money and needless to say my husband and I will not return. Nor will I be recommending this restaurant to others. Thankfully, there are many, many amazing restaurant options in NYC.
The National is a nice restaurant with good ambience and a great location. In my opinion, the quality of the food has been going down in the last 4 years, since I started visiting and what used to be really great food is now just average for NYC. Since the prices have not come down, I believe the restaurant is now only a fair value.
The service was great. The food was delicious and we got out at a reasonable time. Everyone enjoyed it. thank you
The National was a fine place to dine. Typical NY pricey but the food was very good.
We went for our anniversary, it was also restaurant week. We really enjoyed our meal, the short rib was excellent. They also gave us a complimentary dessert that said happy anniversary—so nice!
The food was great but the service was terrible. The noise level of the restaurant made it difficult to have a conversation.
Service was extremely slow. Reservation at 9:00 am. Had to inquire about food at 9:40 am. Server replied that the restaurant was out of avocado toast. I only ordered poached eggs and avocado toast, so we told him to go ahead and bring the eggs and the other meals. Seems like he forgot that the kitchen was holding the ticket until he advised us about the avocado toast. No apology. No concern at all.
We had lunch at The National the day prior and everything at that meal was excellent.
Food very good, service was a little slow, it was the 8:30 am breakfast hour, so i kind of expected that, but seemed extremely slow, was hard to keep the coffee cups and water glasses filled.
The food was mediocre, at best. We expected it to be much better since it’s owner is a famous TV chef. Quite disappointed. And it’s pretty loud.
We were quite disappointed - expected better from Zakarian and for the cost. Food was just okay and the service was really lacking. We went for breakfast and maybe that's not indicative but it seems to me that would be the easiest meal to get right. Will not return.
This is my go to place for business breakfasts. The staff is very friendly. Excellent range of food choices. Prompt service at the front end (ordering and food delivery). Can be a bit slow delivering the check. It has a good buzz, but not so loud one cannot talk. Always packed, so get a reservation.
Great service and wonderful food!
A great casual spot for drinks and appetizers with delicious food
The food was okay, but the service and cleanliness mediocre. The bathroom was one of the filthiest i’ve seen in a long time and some of the glasses and silverware on our table had crusted food on them. Our server was constantly texting and looked like he wanted to be anywhere but at work. Definitely would not return.
Visited the National with a friend during restaurant week. Delicious food and cocktails; if I could I would eat their polenta every day.
We want here for restaurant week and it was good! The menu options were everyday favorites like burrata and chicken. The food was a bit underwhelming but they had my favorite rose (whispering angel, go for it it's a classic) and the atmosphere was great dark and cozy! I would probably come back for a regular meal but it was nothing to write home about
Met friends for dinner. Couldn’t have picked a better place. The service, food, and decor were all wonderful. It was restaurant week and we were handed those menus without even asking. Definitely worth a return trip.
Great food, large portions. Try the chicken. Delicious. Definitely going back.
I would recommend this as a good spot for a quiet discussion. Works great for a business meal.
Always enjoy this place for lunch. Food is consistently delicious.
Business friendly restaurant offering a fresh, quality menu. Food tasted great; however, somewhat pricey
Loud but fun. Good cocktails.
Bad service / small portions
