About The National Bar & Dining Rooms

Chef Geoffrey Zakarian brings his vision of a contemporary New York grand café to life at The National Bar & Dining Rooms. Housed in the same 1927 Emery Roth-designed building as The Benjamin Hotel, The National's all-occasion modern bistro offerings satiate guests from breakfast through late night. Modeled after the celebrated grand cafés in Europe, The National is both residential and metropolitan in design and offers thoughtful details such as antiqued mirrors, a bronze spiral staircase, distressed peacock blue and chocolate leather banquettes, classic marble table tops, and black and white glazed-tile flooring.

Service was less than you would expect from an establishment of this caliber. Food was good, we went for brunch and the most memorable thing was the potatoes. My omelet was under seasoned which is crazy considering who's restaurant this is! Two others in our party had steak and eggs which were decent - pretty small potion of steak. Just not something I'd rush back for, saw burgers going by that looked great that might be the way to go. I don't think the iron chef would be pleased.

What had initially been a very good restaurant with creative menu, now seems somewhat stagnant and willing to cut corners.
The carrot and ginger soup ( which I have had before) seemed like a hastily assembled tomato soup out of a can. With the exception of one slight string of carrot, I would have thought I had ordered another soup.
After 10:00PM, the staff is clearly eager to clean up tables, blow out candles, and cash out, despite the fact that bar is still crowded.
Menu has changed little over the course of last year, which is disappointing. I'll probably go back, but will wait quite a lot of time before I do.

Walked past this place a hundred times. It always looked fun. So finally tried it on Saturday night. Fun crowd. The food was very well executed. The only dish I thought was weak was the meatball appetizer. The Brussels sprouts are divine. And the warm mushroom salad is nice as well. Our waiter was a great guy. Overall a very enjoyable dining experience. Will come back soon.

We stopped last Friday late night in The National for a final glass of wine before retiring to The Benjamin and our hotel room...found it to be warm, inviting and offered a perfect end to an evening out in New York. We visited The National again for a long, lazy brunch on Sunday and it was delightful...great food, good mid-day buzz, and attentive service. Very pleasantly surprised to find a restaurant and bar that "works" in this building...have been staying at The Benjamin for many years and tried all the many restaurants that have come and gone...hope The National stays!

We always stay at Affinia 50 in the same 50th street block, so The National was very convenient. I liked the vibe, atmosphere, and Ronnie our waiter from Aruba was a cool dude. My wife is Russian. We were treating her friend from Moscow to lunch so I was precluded from much of the conversation (with gracious apologies for speaking Russian), so I got a nice buzz on from the wonderful Bloody Marys made just the why I was used to them in San Francisco-spicy with fresh horseradish, and observed the scene. The food was very good, although not overly plentiful. Overall, it was a very pleasant way to spend a cold winter's morning and early afternoon.

Although a little loud at times, our table of six enjoyed our evening immensely. Great food, nice round tables, and wonderful service. One very picky diner was impressed by it all! Casual, yet classy. Food was interesting and very tasty. One note: Over coffee we ordered the cookie plate to nibble on while talking and enjoying the evening. That was the only disappointing item all evening.

Totally surprised at how awful the dining experience was. We were seated at 8pm and dinner was not served until 9:30. Waitstaff was not attentive they seem to avoid coming over with any update. When we questioned if there was a delay of sorts in the kitchen, we were told "No." with a smile. A couple minutes later the waiter returned offering us a free round of drinks due to the delay they previously refused to acknowledge. Once the food was served (which was lukewarm/cold) the staff completely disappeared. Finding someone to request check took an effort which was a surprise since the dining section of the restaurant was almost empty. Such a shame the waitstaff ruined the dining experience and served cold food.

The poor service and long wait - even with a reservation - both to get seated and to receive food, completely ruined the meal and experience. The staff appeared completely overwhelmed and oblivious to ensuring a good customer experience.

We we staying at the The Benjamin Hotel and made fairly early 6:30pm reservations. The staff was a little preoccupied with a big party going on and the kitchen was a little slow. The food was excellent. A limited menu...right sized portions....perfectly prepared. Service seemed like an off night, but the food made up for it. One suggestion...they need to get real martini glasses, not Grandma's barn find.

The food was excellent but our waiter did not match the caliber of this restaurant.he was slow, not attentive and sloppy when serving us wine. We had to call on him to come over several times to get us drinks and take our good order.
The food was exquisite. I had the red snapper and it was cooked perfectly. The polenta on the side was beautiful

We went there for brunch several times it's always very good. The grits are highly recommended. Also it's a great place to meet up in Midtown East where restaurant pickings can sometimes be slim.

We had been at The National before (2012) as we stayed at The Benjamin that time. The National is a bistro style restaurant. They
Served good food at a correct price. We love the "bar bites": chicken wings and spare ribs. Fingerlicking good. They also do a very good burger! The atmosphere is relaxed and vibrant. In short: a good experience. Friendly staff too.

Quite crowded at the bar and in the seating area, but we were put in a quiet spot. They were very lovely and prepared birthday desserts for both of the birthday boys at our table! The food was good, the wine was excellent, but some of the dishes could have been done better--one dish was supposed to have bone marrow in it but didn't seem to have any, for instance. If you want to talk at the bar, it might be difficult to do so, since it was quite noisy.

The national was great as far as food. The servers were a bit overworked and slow to respond to our table the noise was aweful they seated us near the bar and so it was very loud to begin with then when you add the fact the tables were very close to each other I could hear more of my neighbors conversation then the one at my table. The close proximity of diners also added to many times being bumped or nudged

Good for a business lunch, not much charm to the place. Entrance can get chaotic with people coming through the revolving door, waiting to be seated, waiting to retrieve your coat, etc... Too much going on. The room needs some noise buffers, all that tile makes it very noisy and at times rather hard to hear your dining companions, and I suppose for that reason, maybe it isn't so ideal for a business lunch. Food was just okay, nothing to come back for.

We enjoyed our dinner at The National Bar and Dining Rooms, however I felt like our service was a little sub par. When I asked for the restaurant week menu, the server looked a little dejected and handed us one menu for our party of six. We ordered a couple bottles of wine, and I think overall everyone enjoyed their meals. I started with the carrot soup with curried apples (my favorite bite of the night) and then tried the Red Snapper for my main, which was cooked well. I didn't love the "chowder" that was underneath the fish. It was a bit too thin for my taste. We agreed that the desserts left something to be desired.

I was not impressed at all with this restuarant. The food was bland, the tables were tightly put together, and the wait staff was less then personable. I don't normally decide on a restuarant based on atmosphere. I look for good fresh food with lots of flavor. That's not what I received...

Went here for restaurant week. The food was great, but I definitely felt a lack of caring from our server. This isn't the first time a server at a restaurant has stopped being cordial after announcing that we are out for restaurant week. I don't participate in it because I'm cheap, I do it to try their food and see if I want to return. Treat all of your customers with the same level of respect. It's rude to segregate. Also, note that they change their menu from what is shown online. They replaced an entree and a dessert from what was posted that day. Call ahead if you're set on ordering a certain Restaurant Week item. Lastly, the have a B rating from the Dept of Health. I was shocked.

We got off on the wrong foot... I got to the restaurant and the hostess told me my reservation was for 7pm not 530. I explained that I had an email confirming 530, when I attempted to show her she cut me off and said it must have been a mix up. We were sat at small table below the stair case even though many tables were empty during the duration of our dinner. The waiter was also pretty bad not asking us how our food was or even talking at all. The food, however, on a lighter note was really good and iron chef material. I enjoyed it overall even though the service was horrid.

Our experience was excellent. The meal was outstanding from appetizer through dessert. The meal was executed flawlessly down to every detail. The roasted chicken breast was juicy and cooked to perfection, bursting with flavor. The barley risotto that accompanied it was amazingly light and the perfect al dente. The service was attentive but not invasive for those going on dates. Highly highly recommend!!

We went as part of restaurant week and had a good time. The best part was the service, our waiter was VERY good; attentive but not overly so. The carrot soup was excellent and the main courses, short ribs and roasted chicken were very good. The beer selection was really good and we sampled five different ones, many local micros. We sat in the rear which was quieter than the bar area and nice for conversation. Good time, would return.
