About The National Bar & Dining Rooms

Chef Geoffrey Zakarian brings his vision of a contemporary New York grand café to life at The National Bar & Dining Rooms. Housed in the same 1927 Emery Roth-designed building as The Benjamin Hotel, The National's all-occasion modern bistro offerings satiate guests from breakfast through late night. Modeled after the celebrated grand cafés in Europe, The National is both residential and metropolitan in design and offers thoughtful details such as antiqued mirrors, a bronze spiral staircase, distressed peacock blue and chocolate leather banquettes, classic marble table tops, and black and white glazed-tile flooring.

Food was fine, but nothing exceptional. Menu during brunch a bit of a hodgepodge - variants on traditional brunch food but with elements that seemed more lunchy than brunchy (more savory than sweet) and a limited selection of true lunch items.

Fine, but nothing special.

We actually struggled to find something of interest on the menu. Also prices were high for the choices. Tables are close together. Not so much a nice couples place for dinner - maybe better for business dinner or lunch. Although for a business lunch or dinner it would be hard to hear because of close seating and noise level. Our waiter was very good. Our food did come in a timely manner. We shared the Caesar salad. I thought the dressing was strong. My husband had the “ugly burger”. I had the meatballs from the starter menu and a side of Brussels sprouts. The food was not bad but not amazing. We didn’t leave hungry but wouldn’t choose to return with so many other great choices. We were staying at The Benjamin which is in the same building and it was a choice of convenience but disappointing.

Let me lead with the positive. We enjoyed the food and the ambience was terrific. I never leave reviews but I have to comment on the insane up charge for Grey Goose. While their cocktail menu listed drinks at $16-$17, a grey goose martini clocked in at over $22. ( before a tip). I spoke with the manager assuming there had to be an error in the bill, however not only did the manager assure me that was the price, he was rather mean in telling me that he would not do anything about the price simply because I didn’t like it. He said he would take my comment back to management but I sincerely doubt he would and so I leave this review. While he was not willing to adjust the price (or his attitude) I do get to vote with my money and needless to say my husband and I will not return. Nor will I be recommending this restaurant to others. Thankfully, there are many, many amazing restaurant options in NYC.

The National is a nice restaurant with good ambience and a great location. In my opinion, the quality of the food has been going down in the last 4 years, since I started visiting and what used to be really great food is now just average for NYC. Since the prices have not come down, I believe the restaurant is now only a fair value.

We went for our anniversary, it was also restaurant week. We really enjoyed our meal, the short rib was excellent. They also gave us a complimentary dessert that said happy anniversary—so nice!

Service was extremely slow. Reservation at 9:00 am. Had to inquire about food at 9:40 am. Server replied that the restaurant was out of avocado toast. I only ordered poached eggs and avocado toast, so we told him to go ahead and bring the eggs and the other meals. Seems like he forgot that the kitchen was holding the ticket until he advised us about the avocado toast. No apology. No concern at all.

We had lunch at The National the day prior and everything at that meal was excellent.

Food very good, service was a little slow, it was the 8:30 am breakfast hour, so i kind of expected that, but seemed extremely slow, was hard to keep the coffee cups and water glasses filled.

The food was mediocre, at best. We expected it to be much better since it’s owner is a famous TV chef. Quite disappointed. And it’s pretty loud.

We were quite disappointed - expected better from Zakarian and for the cost. Food was just okay and the service was really lacking. We went for breakfast and maybe that's not indicative but it seems to me that would be the easiest meal to get right. Will not return.

This is my go to place for business breakfasts. The staff is very friendly. Excellent range of food choices. Prompt service at the front end (ordering and food delivery). Can be a bit slow delivering the check. It has a good buzz, but not so loud one cannot talk. Always packed, so get a reservation.

The food was okay, but the service and cleanliness mediocre. The bathroom was one of the filthiest i’ve seen in a long time and some of the glasses and silverware on our table had crusted food on them. Our server was constantly texting and looked like he wanted to be anywhere but at work. Definitely would not return.

We want here for restaurant week and it was good! The menu options were everyday favorites like burrata and chicken. The food was a bit underwhelming but they had my favorite rose (whispering angel, go for it it's a classic) and the atmosphere was great dark and cozy! I would probably come back for a regular meal but it was nothing to write home about

It was my Daughters Birthday. I really wanted to make it special. Our waiters name was Pronab” and he was so attentive impressive and intelligent about all aspects of the restaurant. From cocktail knowledge to dinner he was on spot. When we return We will definitely. Ask to be seated at his station. Excellent dining experience.
As far as the restrooms Filthy. They also seated a couple right next to us and did not need to. They leaned over to us and mentioned that the hostess could have spaced us out a little.
Management really needs to fix this.

Went on restaurant week. Everything that we had was quite delicious, beautifully prepared and presented. It was real food that was quite delicious. Nothing that was bizarre or unrecognizable. Really enjoyed this place. It’s a bit pricey and so getting it on restaurant week was a good deal

I keep going back here because it's close to my office. And it is truly a terrible restaurant. This past Thursday I had a business breakfast meeting. My guest waited 20 minutes for the first cup of coffee and this after asking four times. The food is thoughtless. The servers are either over-tabled or the just don't care. I keep saying never again. I think I mean it this time.

We enjoyed the restaurant week special and the food was excellent. The restaurant was very noisy and we had to ask to be moved. Our original table was near the bar and we were surrounded by noisy drinkers. None of the tables has table cloths or place mats which would be expected in a good restaurant. We also observed that unused plates were collected from tables and put on the servers counter and then reused at other tables. Again not the quality expected. Would not revisit the National.

Nice midtown restaurant for lunch. Lots of business people, lots of noise, but pleasant & attentive staff. Somewhat overpriced for good, but not exceptional lunch standards. Still, an overall pleasant lunch venue.

Seated promptly, friendly staff, food was delicious (especially the short rib!) and healthy-sized portions for Restaurant Week dinner. The inside is lovely as well. However, the wait was extremely long between each course served. We waited about 20 minutes every time in between courses from appetizer to dessert. The restaurant did not appear to be at full capacity so I can't find a way to justify the delays.
