Chef Geoffrey Zakarian brings his vision of a contemporary New York grand café to life at The National Bar & Dining Rooms. Housed in the same 1927 Emery Roth-designed building as The Benjamin Hotel, The National's all-occasion modern bistro offerings satiate guests from breakfast through late night. Modeled after the celebrated grand cafés in Europe, The National is both residential and metropolitan in design and offers thoughtful details such as antiqued mirrors, a bronze spiral staircase, distressed peacock blue and chocolate leather banquettes, classic marble table tops, and black and white glazed-tile flooring.

Great spot for a working business lunch. Tables are private enough. Great menu with lots of variety and choice. Food is solid as is service. I’m a regular.

Very noisy, the food was over salted. The waiter gave us bread plates but never brought over any bread. Overpriced for lunch

Food always great. Good menu and everything prepared well. Had the Thai curry mussels - I wanted to soak up every last drop. Yummy. Pork chop was well prepared and bbq sauce it came with was excellent. Fries were all nubs and oily like they were refried. What needs work is the service. Pathetic. Slow. Order wrong. No follow up. Had to ask three people for a beer. Very disappointing. Realize also it is extremely noisy. So much so it is hard to have a business discussion (or a romantic one) without almost yelling.

This restaurant seems overpriced to me. All the food was tasty but not outstanding, and the price was very high.

Being owned by Geoffrey Zakarian, The National immediately has a reputation. I would say the few times I've been there, it's lived up to that, even if the menu isn't overly innovative. Good, solid dishes, well prepared. On this occasion, a business breakfast, I had an egg white frittata with artichoke hearts and parmesan cheese that was just perfect. My guest had the avocado toast, which he said was top notch. Frittatas and avocado toast are not exactly cutting edge menu items from a celebrity chef, but execution and quality remain paramount and here The National delivered. It's a busy place, which says good things about it. The wait staff is efficient if not terribly warm and friendly. But it's midtown Manhattan afterall. I'll be back.

We love brunch at the National. Today was not exceptional, but solid. I ordered a mint julep and they didn’t know how to make it. Other cocktails lacked their normal finesse. Apparently the bartender was ill. That said, they did comp me a glass of prosecco, so all is well. Food was solid as usual.

We were there for Easter brunch and first of all, we were not told prior that there was only the special brunch menu of $59 per person which was expensive considering no drinks were included. When we tried to order some cocktails we were told the bartender was out so we were limited to certain drinks that they’re able to make. For the meal itself, I ordered their burrata with the fig compote which was surprisingly very good. I loved the sweetness of the fig with the creaminess of the burrata. For the main dish I had their lamb bolognese which also very tasty, pasta was perfect. My only complaint about the lamb dish was someone forgot to fish out the two bay leaves that were hidden in the bolognese. Lastly for dessert I had their chocolate mousse which was ok. All in all, food was adequate, service a little odd.

The food was great and the wait staff was patient and very polite. A great location and ambience. We were seated in a corner booth as a party of two which was really nice for privacy and conversation.

Good atmosphere and good food, the service perhaps a little bit too fast for dinner. The bar area is nice and cozy to fancy a drink before and/or after your meal.

This was an incredible treat as always. I try to eat here at least six times a year (I am into my nineth year) because it reminds me of the food my parents cooked with care and plenty of love. The staff is attentive, kind and knowledgeable.

Had a business lunch with a friend from Oregon, during one of NYC's March 2018 Snowstorms. The restaurant was open and very operational during the heaviest snowfall hour.

We both had the Lamb burger, which is a Zakarian favorite and it was worth the trip to the National. They were cooked medium (as ordered) and were still juicy and flavorful. With the yoghurt sauce, the burger was the best burger I had in NYC that week (and I love burgers). The fries were crispy and tasty, without being over salted.

The only drawback is that they only serve brand soda out of small bottles and they charge you for each one, as opposed to one fee per dining person for the beverage.

I have been to the National every time I come to a meeting in the hotels on Lexington Ave in the midtown area and I plan on doing it again next year.

This is a solid spot for an informal breakfast meeting, especially for someone who is new to the city. It’s a little noisy and slightly crammed, but the ambiance makes up for it.

Went for brunch with a group of friends. We needed a convenient midtown location and this place looked good, plus Geoffrey Zakarian is a great chef. It was pretty quiet for a Sunday afternoon which was great for us. The food was ok. Not bad, but nothing special given the restaurant reviews, celebrity chef and prices. All of the dishes we ordered we could have gotten somewhere else and would have tasted the same. The main issue was the waitstaff. They forgot items, didn't know the menu well and couldn't answer questions, wouldn't come by to check on us or take a long time to come back with things (the place was essentially empty). Two of the same drink ordered came out differently, one was wrong and it was because they were out of an ingredient but didn't tell us until later. Overall a disappointing experience.

Steak tartar was delicious. Steak was bland, had no flavor except for sauce that was put over it. Came with oven roast potatoes, was suppose to be lyonaise. Salmon was good, small portion. Broth it was in seemed watered down. Wine by the glass was way overpriced, even for New York standards.
Burgers looked good coming out. If I go back would probably have a burger.
Service was ok, nothing special.

We only came here for breakfast. I liked the brasserie decor, and the service was very good. I had pancakes, which were enormous (not my favorite!) but still good, and my husband had an omelet. A nice place for a civilized brunch midtown.

Honestly every time I go to the National I find the service to be terrible, the room too loud to have a meaningful conversation and the tables too close to one another.
Despite its convenient location, I say skip it!

Food was fine, but nothing exceptional. Menu during brunch a bit of a hodgepodge - variants on traditional brunch food but with elements that seemed more lunchy than brunchy (more savory than sweet) and a limited selection of true lunch items.

Fine, but nothing special.

We actually struggled to find something of interest on the menu. Also prices were high for the choices. Tables are close together. Not so much a nice couples place for dinner - maybe better for business dinner or lunch. Although for a business lunch or dinner it would be hard to hear because of close seating and noise level. Our waiter was very good. Our food did come in a timely manner. We shared the Caesar salad. I thought the dressing was strong. My husband had the “ugly burger”. I had the meatballs from the starter menu and a side of Brussels sprouts. The food was not bad but not amazing. We didn’t leave hungry but wouldn’t choose to return with so many other great choices. We were staying at The Benjamin which is in the same building and it was a choice of convenience but disappointing.

Let me lead with the positive. We enjoyed the food and the ambience was terrific. I never leave reviews but I have to comment on the insane up charge for Grey Goose. While their cocktail menu listed drinks at $16-$17, a grey goose martini clocked in at over $22. ( before a tip). I spoke with the manager assuming there had to be an error in the bill, however not only did the manager assure me that was the price, he was rather mean in telling me that he would not do anything about the price simply because I didn’t like it. He said he would take my comment back to management but I sincerely doubt he would and so I leave this review. While he was not willing to adjust the price (or his attitude) I do get to vote with my money and needless to say my husband and I will not return. Nor will I be recommending this restaurant to others. Thankfully, there are many, many amazing restaurant options in NYC.

The National is a nice restaurant with good ambience and a great location. In my opinion, the quality of the food has been going down in the last 4 years, since I started visiting and what used to be really great food is now just average for NYC. Since the prices have not come down, I believe the restaurant is now only a fair value.
