About The National Bar & Dining Rooms

Iron Chef Geoffrey Zakarian brings his vision of a contemporary New York grand café to life at The National Bar & Dining Rooms. Housed in the same 1927 Emery Roth-designed building as The Benjamin Hotel, The National's all-occasion modern bistro offerings satiate guests from breakfast through late night. Modeled after the celebrated grand cafés in Europe, The National is both residential and metropolitan in design and offers thoughtful details such as antiqued mirrors, a bronze spiral staircase, distressed peacock blue and chocolate leather banquettes, classic marble table tops, and black and white glazed-tile flooring.

We went for a work team lunch. 3 out of 4 of us got burgers and they were amazing. The "ugly" burger was delicious, but my favorite was their lamb burger which was just amazing! Both burgers had a bit of a spice to them which I also really liked as well. The fries also had a nice spice on them for a unique flavor. Great food and would definitely recommend!

only issue was the hostess got our reservation mixed up with a Dave T. We had requested 4 with a booth and we got sat in a louder area because the hostess thought we were a different reservation with a party of three adding one.

food quality was good ( went for business breakfast. I was disappointed that I had to alert the service staff each time we needed anything as they were not really paying attention and needed Prodding too frequently

The burger was ok. Fries were good. Eggs Benedict inedible. Lax and bagel good.
We were staying at the hotel so we had room service and ate there several times
It’s convenient if you are at the hotel, other than that we would have gone elsewhere

Good atmosphere and not too noisy. Staff attentive and friendly. Had the steamed mussels with coconut milk, thai basil and green carry which was just right and nicely spiced. The lamb burger was a disappointment- the bun ordinary, the grilled halloumi chees tasteless (or missing?) and the harrissa with too much tomato and no chilly bite. Wine-list (by the glass selection) not up to date.
Few minor attentions to detail would have made it perfect

We had a really nice brunch here. The pancakes and the waffles were both good, but we would have preferred to have the yogurt that comes with the waffles to be served on the side, but we didn’t ask for it that way, so it’s not on them. It was just a little too much for us. Overall, a good experience.

Excellent neighborhood spot. Very creative menu. Salmon cooked perfectly rare as ordered. Mussels/frites excellent. Reasonably priced. Great everyday dining.

One of the best burgers I've had in a while. Our server was also pretty awesome. I would definitely go back. We sat underneath the staircase and it was private enough to enjoy a nice conversation even though it was fairly loud/lively in the restaurant.

I have frequently walked past the National and liked the smart look of the dining room, and when I read that it was a Zakarian restaurant, I wanted to try it. It was a very mixed experience. Once inside, I realized that the room was better suited to big groups (our party of 3 was seated at a banquette for 6), and when those big groups did enter, it was quite noisy. We enjoyed the Brussel sprouts as an appetizer, and my salmon was quite good, but my friend hated his pork dish, and the expensive steak looked hard to cut. Dessert, my favorite part of life, was meh. Despite having the room almost to ourselves for quite a while, service was not overly attentive. I wanted to love the National, so that I could have a go-to place midtown, but I didn’t.

Very dissapointing. I was expecting a much different experience, particularly because Jeffrey Z. is quite picky with his criticism to other chef. For starter, the place was as noisy as a regular sport bar. Tables for two so close to each other, that you cannot hold any private conversation, or avoiding listening or being distracted by those of your neighbors dinners. The food was far away from expectacular, bland and lacking seasoning. And the service just regular. In general, not a pleasant experience.

We went for brunch, the menu needs an urgent review. The owner of this restaurant judges other peoples’ cooking talents and the food at his restaurant is quite plain!!.

The service is not good, we came a reservation, and the girl who was in charge, was living on a different planet. It took us about 10 minutes to get water and about 15 minutes to get the drinks that we ordered!!

I was most impressed by the service. It was very attentive and detailed without being obtrusive. Our food was excellent! We went before heading to a show, trying to choose a place a bit out of the way and everything was wonderful.

Great for Business or Friends' Breakfast, Brunch or Lunch in Midtown. Much better than a coffee shop yet more modest than a fancy hotel dining room. Nice ambiance, but on the noisy side. Good food at typical NYC breakfast prices.

Even after specifying that I would like to reserve a nice table for an important client lunch, we were seated in the bar area. When I complained to the host about the noise level and asked to be seated in the main dining area, I was told that the noise level was the same in the dining area and I would have to wait for a table even though I had made a reservation a week in advance.

This was one of my worst business lunch experiences and I wouldn't be inclined to recommend this place to any of my friends/colleagues.
