Excellent restaurant. Extremely consistent food and service. Everyone provides top notch attention. Strongly recommend this restaurant to anyone close to the Senate offices and looking for a good place to eat.

There was a sewer-like smell that pervaded the restaurant. I wasn't sure where it was coming from.

The crabmeat appetizer was very disappointing--just some crab meat (jumbo lump, thankfully, but not super-fresh) scooped out of the carton and dropped on a lettuce leaf, next to a strip of red pepper and a pot of some vague mustard/mayo sauce. That's not an appetizer; it's a leftover! The bread was good, though.

We have gone to DC the second week in November the past five years. We eat at the Monocle every time. The service is wonderful and the food is great.

I have been going to the Monocle for years. It is a warm, comfortable restaurant that is comfortable for all strains of the political spectrum. The food is terrific, well prepared and never disappoints. The drinks are perfectly mixed and the wine list is extensive but not intimidating. Beer selections come from many states and countries. Many of the servers at the Monocle have been there for years as have the managers. Once you have been to the Monocle you become a "regular" and are treated as family. If you are on the Hill don't miss this longtime iconic restaurant for lunch or dinner and don't miss the walls of pictures of Senators and Congresspeople on the upstairs hallway...I call it the Smithsonian of the Hill!
Enjoy,
Barbara

Loved The Monocle. Excellent food, superior service, and interesting Senate-inspired decor. We were in town for a P.G. Wodehouse Convention. One of our party chose the restaurant for the name, and the good reviews. It was even better than expected, and, given DC prices, you could call it quite reasonable. We hope to return. A lovely place in business since 1960 andlooks just new enough, and just old enough!

FYI: it is a crowded bar with a lot of chairs. There is a lower level that is inaccessible. Service is great. Food is great. View is great too! I would bring a friend or date here. Doors are not automated for accessibility. I would recommend the purchase of a bench to replace the 3 little tables at the front of the restaurant because that would make it more accessible for wheelchair riders.

The Monocle is a great steakhouse, which also has a top quality fish selection. Service was efficient and polite. The noise level was a bit louder than expected, but we were still able to converse.

This Capitol Hill institution did not disappoint! The staff treated our family as if we were VIPs or Washington insiders, which made our dining experience memorable for our teenage children (and a few VIPs did in fact pass through as we were dining!) The steaks were outstanding, and perfectly prepared. Don't skip the signature cocktail - the Grand Old Punch!

I love the Monocle! Closes restaurant to The US Capitol. Great food and service. Love the history of this restaurant. We ordered the steak, chicken, salmon and crab cakes. Every dish was cooked to perfection. Bread was great too. The service is also exceptional.

I was with a group visiting Washington and The Monocle had been recommended for a restaurant near Union Station. We were warmly greeted, placed our order, and ate our dinner. Some in our group ordered sorbet and ice cream for dessert which arrived in glass dishes. While one person was eating her dessert, one third of the side of the dish fell off. The server came over and replaced the dessert. It was surprising to all of us that she was expected to pay for this dessert. Also, we asked for three separate checks when we ordered. The server brought the check without the division which was not surprising since he had not been very attentive. He wanted to divide it at the table which was unacceptable. He was pretty rude about it. It was a great dinner except for the spotty service.

It’s was old fashioned-almost like eating at your grandmothers house. Plates were older China, food was ok (seemed to have a menu catered for guests over the age of 60), and dimly lit. Service was well though, engaging waiters and manager. Just needs some sprucing up; ambiance and food selections.

We selected the Monocle during Restaurant Week because of its long tradition of serving Capitol Hill and were not disappointed. Service was excellent. Our steaks were cooked perfectly. Highlights were the fried calamari appetizers (huge portion, enough to share) and one of the best cheesecakes ever.

I had always wanted to experience The Monocle on Capitol Hill. This year's Restaurant Week in DC offered the opportunity to try The Monocle. It was a wonderful dining experience and well worth the trip in from Maryland to dine at The Monocle. The Restaurant Week special menu offerings were actually more varied than one might find at other Restaurant Week participants and allowed for us to experience a couple of different entree's during our visit. A place to possibly see some of our Legislators, The Monocle is a delightful experience and I will most definitely be returning and telling my friends.

The Monocle is a bit above my price range during normal times. That is why I look forward to Restaurant Week. The value for the price is excellent. I have never had a bad experience there. The food is wonderful and the ambiance is quintessentially Washington.
