The closest restaurant to the Capitol building, United States Senate and Union Station, The Monocle Restaurant, established in 1960, is not only known as a Washington institution, but also for its fine American cuisine. You can always count on being served great crab-cakes, grilled fresh fish, steaks and chops, while enjoying the powerful political scenery. The private room upstairs is a Washington classic for private parties and political fundraisers.

This is a special place with excellent service and divine food!
This was the classic DC steakhouse feeling I had hoped for. We had a NY strip and a bone-in filet (on special) that were amazing. The cheese plate was a great starter, and great value.
GREAT place for a traditional DC experience!
An incredible place with great history and atmosphere
An all-time classic restaurant. Just a wonderful dining experience all the way around.
I love the Monocle! The food and service is top notch.
Nick is super host. Crab avocado appetizer is the bomb. Took a career DC guest who had never been and showed him the Senate’s best watering hole. Bread at the table delicious. What’s not to like about the Monocle? — it fits like a perfect glove.
Great place. Full of history and dignitaries!
Truly outstanding luncheon experience; salmon was excellent, and service was friendly and highly professional.
Great steak spot in the district!
Neat little place with historical and hill connections. Would be a great place to bump into a senator and grab a bite and drinks.
Great food. Excellent service.
The lightning can possibly be improved.. also the walls of the first floor.
I've been to the Monocle many times and never disappointed. It's a great location and nice atmosphere. I arrived at noon on a Monday and the restaurant was somewhat empty. But this changed quickly and full of people and everyone having a nice time and not too loud. Our lunch was excellent and the waiter and host very helpful and friendly. The Monocle is great and you won't be disappointed!
We came here for Valentines day. The menu options were fantastic, the wine options were superb. I have to say that our server George was amazing!
Loved everything about it
Everything was great from start to finish. Love the Monocle
Always the best service, best food, best people watching....
Food was excellent, as usual. Service was great! We only get to the Monacle once a year but it never disappoints. Be back next year.
Disappointing
Perfect quiet place for a business lunch with great food and professional service.
Quaint and efficient
It is as amazing, as always!
The personnel at The Monocle were attentive, friendly and courteous. The food was delicious and presented in an appetizing manner. When the staff realized my husband and I were celebrating the 51st anniversary of our first date in 1969, they presented us with a wonderful dessert! We would DEFINITELY return to The Monocle when in Washington, D.C. again.
The food was delicious, and the service was outstanding. This is a wonderful restaurant, and so close to Folgers Shakespeare Theater.
This is by far the best place to eat on Capitol Hill.
A pleasant and unique restaurant with superb cuisine.
The food was good, business casual dress. I had trouble finding parking.
Went for restaurant week and was amazed to experience great food and service at this historical restaurant. The waiters were experienced, careful and attentive to our every request without being overbearing. I thoroughly enjoyed my time here and would return and recommend.
The place in DC for perfectly prepared steak done the old school way. Not overly fancy, just done right and exceedingly well. The rest of the menu is also beautifully prepared. Great atmosphere and the wait staff couldn’t be more professional and helpful. It’s a favorite!
Was very enjoyable. The service was one of the best I have ever had at any restaurant. I'm in love with this service.
Hostess and waiter provided excellent service. The liver and onions was absolutely delicious
We went for dinner during restaurant week and the food was wonderful. The atmosphere is quaint and we enjoyed cocktails. Wait staff was terrific. I went to this restaurant once before for lunch and the experience was similar.
I go on restaurant week and enjoy the visit each time.
The experience was going well until another table found a creature crawling in the restaurant. That extremely dampened the mood.
We went because we like historic restaurants. Glad we did it. Like Ebbitt’s and Capital Grill better
Excellent meal. Great service. Best Caesar salad ever!
Great food.
Great service.
Great atmosphere.
Great history.
We were in town with friends for a basketball game- this restaurant was recommended by our hotel and walking distance. The ambiance was nice and the service was excellent. We had a very enjoyable meal, the only complaint was that my husbands steak, which was the filet mignon special , was rather fatty. If we stay in the area again, I would definitely go back. Everything else was delicious.
