The closest restaurant to the Capitol building, United States Senate and Union Station, The Monocle Restaurant, established in 1960, is not only known as a Washington institution, but also for its fine American cuisine. You can always count on being served great crab-cakes, grilled fresh fish, steaks and chops, while enjoying the powerful political scenery. The private room upstairs is a Washington classic for private parties and political fundraisers.
Luxe Crab Cake
Jumbo lump, Napa cabbage slaw
Certified Angus Beef, red wine sauce; served with potato gratin
apple wood bacon, tomatoes and blue cheese
Dinner, host and service was exceptional. Would definitely go again.
The staff was friendly and fabulous.
Waiter had orders confused. Ordered bowl of soup for entree’ and received cup for appetizer. Then received bowl with other table entree’ orders that was only slightly warm.
Great food, great service!
The greatest political ambiance in an elegant setting on Capitol Hill with a tremendous staff and great food. Wonderful experience. My favorite place to eat in Washington, DC.
The food was absolutely delicious, the cocktails were incredible and unique, and they really made my partner feel special for his birthday. I loved it here.
Nick, John, and the entire team serve up top notch food in a very comfortable setting marinated in the political milieu two blocks from the U.S. Capitol. We'll be back for sure.
superb cuisine and matching service- will visit again
Monocle provided their typical excellent service and food. Perfect location for a business lunch.
Fabulous food and service. Truly a gem of a restaurant
Definition of Elegance.
Great service and food!
The waiters were outstanding! The food was excellent! Loved the whole experience. I can’t wait to go back.
Great food and even friendlier servers. Cool to eat were all the Senators have! Right next to Capitol Hill and when we went, it wasn’t that busy.
What a great place for diener!!
Great good as always, you can not go wrong. A winner!
We have always wanted to try the Monocle as we pass it every day to and from work. It did not disappoint! The food was awesome, great pricing for the quality and quantity and our server Urta was excellent. It was an awesome classic DC vibe. We will definitely be back soon!
I love the Monocle! Friendly staff and high quality food. Great vibe too!
We had an excellent lunch. Staff were attentive but not invasive and we enjoyed a pleasant few hours chatting and enjoying some good food. Look forward to returning
Terrific staff! Our first visit and we were made to feel as if we were regular customers. The menu is what you expect from an established restaurant and the kitchen delivered in a wonderful way. Also, the martinis are exceptional!
Wonderful food, great drinks, thoughtful service.
First time in the restaurant. Everything was fenomenal. The food, the service and the atmosphere was great. The owner make you feel very welcome. Affordable prices.
Food and service were beyond outstanding. A great location also.
Old school classic. Service is personal but discrete.
First time dining here. The staff were very welcoming and friendly. Our waiter was excellent and attentive. The food was great. Quiet atmosphere and lowkey. Great for dates. Will definitely be back. Only suggestion I have is maybe add a brownie option alongside the ice cream choices on the dessert menu.
Great for a quiet place to talk strategies over a tasty meal!
After reopening from its pandemic closure The Monocle gratefully has its clublike atmosphere. The decor and its personality happily remain much the same.
The bread was excellent. I ordered the Calve's Liver with Applewood smoked bacon & Grilled Onions and it was absolutely delicious! To many, this dish is an acquired taste, but to those of us who few it as comfort food, it is prepared and served at its best by The Monocle, tender and tasty! I offer it my highest recommendation!
I finished the meal with their chocolate panna cotta flavored with finely sheared almonds and it had a silky, creamy texture and a milky, sweet chocolate taste.
Regrettably, my two guests were not as pleased with their Shrimp Salad, but since I did not sample it I can not honestly comment on it beyond saying its appearance was pleasing.
Wonderful lunch at Monocle - greeted warmly by hosts Nick and John. Wonderful menu options with Greek Mediterranean flavors. Terrific service and a great wine list. Highly recommended.,
Go to place when working downtown and meeting friends
The experience of the Monocle is a DC must.
If you see this place or read this review it is a sign to go there and have a terrific meal. We stayed at the Hyatt down the road and ventured out for a walk to dinner. We saw this beautiful place and quickly changed our reservation from a different place to this place!
We were greeted by the manager that treated us like we had dined there 500 times before. Just so warm and welcoming; a true gentleman. The restaurant is clean and comfortable and the menu had something for everyone. I’m not sure if the food or the service took top ranking or if both were just beyond excellent. Steak cooked to perfection, an amazing crab cake and the potatoes gratin where all outstanding. I personally love a friendly, professional and attentive waitstaff and ours was a true gem as he made our experience even better. Our daughter, 9, ate this huge bowl of fresh pasta as if it was her last meal and somehow had room for their chocolate dessert.
I think it’s also important to note that this place is a piece of DC history and you will see the legacy on the walls.
We went for a birthday date night! Our steaks came out wrong but the staff bent over backwards to make the situation right and we ended up having a delicious meal and experience. We would definitely come back. Thank you for the great service!!
The Monocle has been offering great food and service for decades -- and it didn't disappoint post-Covid.
Best steaks in town. Portions are perfect - not gargantuan like too many steakhouses. Service was excellent and not rushed. Great wine list that was not overwhelming or overpriced.
The restaurant felt like a classic. Definitely lots of stories those walls could tell. The service was exceptional, the steak was delicious, and the dining room was not crowded (a rarity in DC). A perfect place for dinner!
Politicos are on the menu here -- Susan Collins and Marco Rubio ate while we were there. And the food would not offend any American, regardless of politics -- unless you actually liked food. My salmon was tasteless and too well done. My husband's chicken was OK but nothing special. But great place for sightings of our nation's leaders!
A DC classic....professional, friendly service and outstanding food at a convenient location on Capitol Hill where the atmosphere is "Cheers" meets "West Wing". Any visit to DC must include a stop at the Monocle.
By far my favorite DC restaurant. Always a joy dining at The Monocle
