The Monocle is the closest restaurant to the Capitol building, United States Senate and Union Station. Established in 1960, The Monocle is not only known as a Washington institution, but also for its fine American cuisine-served by a professional and friendly team of servers.     The Monocle - a Capitol Hill institution - is a must, whether you are a one-time DC visitor or a local foodie. The food always is reliably great and the drinks are awesome. Nick is the best maitre d' in town, thoughtfully taking care of patrons of all stripes. Street parking nearby.

    First time here, and everything was awesome from arrival to departure. Service was lovely and welcoming, food was great nice flavor, and all. There bread was outstanding 🤭. Would return as well as recommend to others!!!

    While the food was good, and service good, attention to detail lacked. One member of our group wanted a specific salad. Waiter said they did not have it, yet another member was then served with a salad containing most of the ingredients. I ordered a Johnny Walker Black double with one rock. It seemed to be OK, was not a really full double. The second came and was obviuosly not Johnny Walker Black. They do not have craft ice, no round or square rocks, it was just one small piece of ice.

    One of the best dining experiences we've ever had. Everyone was superbly professional, affable, and we were treated with same warm welcome and service as regular customers.     Everything from the service to the wine to the bread to the butter to the filet to the salmon, everything was exceptional. Highly recommend the Filet and salmon dishes along with the Chardonnay.

    Nice restaurant. Good food overall. We had two waiters (why?). One, from Mongolia, was lovely and very professional. The other was rude. It resulted in that my wife didn’t get a starter at all. Also, she was told to use the bread knife for her salmon mains course. I asked for French mustard for my liver, and was told they didn’t have French mustard, only Dijon mustard (!). We gave a 20$ tip on a 175$ bill, and our nice waiter came to complain that we should have given 30$ tip. I’m afraid that this is heinous - one needs to earn a tip - not expect it automatically. The food was good, the ambiance was nice and lively, but the one waiter was the big spoiler.

    As my neighborhood go to restaurant for a cozy American meal, I always want to keep trying... Unfortunately the last two times I have been the service was not up to the level one would anticipate. I will try again in the near future to see if anything changes. I will admit that there seemed to be preferential attention given to the business/congressional regulars so I am sure they are appreciative.

    Service was very slow. I asked for an Old Fashioned and it immediately came out. Was watery and clearly has been made previously. We sent it back. The shellfish bisque was also very watery. Nothing like a bisque should be. The crab cakes were just ok. So it’s overpriced. The filet was good and cooked to our directions.

    Great food, great service, and great drinks! The bone in rib-eye was cooked perfectly and had an amazing flavor. The appetizers they recommended were perfect for our group of 8. We got the spicy sausage, calamari and the crab meat with avocado. We will definitely be back!

    We caught dinner here after a day of sightseeing in DC. It is a very nice restaurant and I would normally have dressed nicer if we had not just been trekking around the National Mall. The entire staff was amazing and classy. We had our almost-2 year old with us who was not on her best behavior. However, it seemed to bother us much more than the staff. Our table had the calamari, spicy sausage, Frenched chicken, pork chop, and salmon. The entrees were the stars in our opinions. This is the type of restaurant that doesn’t have a huge menu because they only offer what they do well. I was delighted at the texture and flavors of my Frenched chicken. The seasonal vegetables were cooked to the perfect point: not too crunchy and not too mushy. The potatoes au gratin were slightly different from what I was expecting, but still delicious. Those in my party that got the salmon and pork chop had just as much good to say about the flavors and preparation of their entrees. The portions were spot-on for dinner. If you are used to typical massive American meal sizes, you might be a little disappointed. However, I felt that it was the perfect amount. My only negative about the experience was the noisy toddler that we brought with us.
