The closest restaurant to the Capitol building, United States Senate and Union Station, The Monocle Restaurant, established in 1960, is not only known as a Washington institution, but also for its fine American cuisine. You can always count on being served great crab-cakes, grilled fresh fish, steaks and chops, while enjoying the powerful political scenery. The private room upstairs is a Washington classic for private parties and political fundraisers.

Wonderful lunch at Monocle - greeted warmly by hosts Nick and John. Wonderful menu options with Greek Mediterranean flavors. Terrific service and a great wine list. Highly recommended.,
Go to place when working downtown and meeting friends
The experience of the Monocle is a DC must.
If you see this place or read this review it is a sign to go there and have a terrific meal. We stayed at the Hyatt down the road and ventured out for a walk to dinner. We saw this beautiful place and quickly changed our reservation from a different place to this place!
We were greeted by the manager that treated us like we had dined there 500 times before. Just so warm and welcoming; a true gentleman. The restaurant is clean and comfortable and the menu had something for everyone. I’m not sure if the food or the service took top ranking or if both were just beyond excellent. Steak cooked to perfection, an amazing crab cake and the potatoes gratin where all outstanding. I personally love a friendly, professional and attentive waitstaff and ours was a true gem as he made our experience even better. Our daughter, 9, ate this huge bowl of fresh pasta as if it was her last meal and somehow had room for their chocolate dessert.
I think it’s also important to note that this place is a piece of DC history and you will see the legacy on the walls.
We went for a birthday date night! Our steaks came out wrong but the staff bent over backwards to make the situation right and we ended up having a delicious meal and experience. We would definitely come back. Thank you for the great service!!
The Monocle has been offering great food and service for decades -- and it didn't disappoint post-Covid.
Best steaks in town. Portions are perfect - not gargantuan like too many steakhouses. Service was excellent and not rushed. Great wine list that was not overwhelming or overpriced.
The restaurant felt like a classic. Definitely lots of stories those walls could tell. The service was exceptional, the steak was delicious, and the dining room was not crowded (a rarity in DC). A perfect place for dinner!
Politicos are on the menu here -- Susan Collins and Marco Rubio ate while we were there. And the food would not offend any American, regardless of politics -- unless you actually liked food. My salmon was tasteless and too well done. My husband's chicken was OK but nothing special. But great place for sightings of our nation's leaders!
A DC classic....professional, friendly service and outstanding food at a convenient location on Capitol Hill where the atmosphere is "Cheers" meets "West Wing". Any visit to DC must include a stop at the Monocle.
By far my favorite DC restaurant. Always a joy dining at The Monocle
This is a special place with excellent service and divine food!
This was the classic DC steakhouse feeling I had hoped for. We had a NY strip and a bone-in filet (on special) that were amazing. The cheese plate was a great starter, and great value.
GREAT place for a traditional DC experience!
An incredible place with great history and atmosphere
An all-time classic restaurant. Just a wonderful dining experience all the way around.
I love the Monocle! The food and service is top notch.
Nick is super host. Crab avocado appetizer is the bomb. Took a career DC guest who had never been and showed him the Senate’s best watering hole. Bread at the table delicious. What’s not to like about the Monocle? — it fits like a perfect glove.
Great place. Full of history and dignitaries!
Truly outstanding luncheon experience; salmon was excellent, and service was friendly and highly professional.
Great steak spot in the district!
Neat little place with historical and hill connections. Would be a great place to bump into a senator and grab a bite and drinks.
Great food. Excellent service.
The lightning can possibly be improved.. also the walls of the first floor.
I've been to the Monocle many times and never disappointed. It's a great location and nice atmosphere. I arrived at noon on a Monday and the restaurant was somewhat empty. But this changed quickly and full of people and everyone having a nice time and not too loud. Our lunch was excellent and the waiter and host very helpful and friendly. The Monocle is great and you won't be disappointed!
We came here for Valentines day. The menu options were fantastic, the wine options were superb. I have to say that our server George was amazing!
Loved everything about it
Everything was great from start to finish. Love the Monocle
Always the best service, best food, best people watching....
Food was excellent, as usual. Service was great! We only get to the Monacle once a year but it never disappoints. Be back next year.
Perfect quiet place for a business lunch with great food and professional service.
Quaint and efficient
It is as amazing, as always!
The personnel at The Monocle were attentive, friendly and courteous. The food was delicious and presented in an appetizing manner. When the staff realized my husband and I were celebrating the 51st anniversary of our first date in 1969, they presented us with a wonderful dessert! We would DEFINITELY return to The Monocle when in Washington, D.C. again.
The food was delicious, and the service was outstanding. This is a wonderful restaurant, and so close to Folgers Shakespeare Theater.
This is by far the best place to eat on Capitol Hill.
A pleasant and unique restaurant with superb cuisine.
The food was good, business casual dress. I had trouble finding parking.
