The Bar Room at The Modern Ratings and Reviews
We've dined at The Bar Room at the Modern several times over the years since it opened,
and it has become one of our favorite NYC restaurants. The ambience, service, food and relative value haveall been terrific. This was our first visit since Gabriel Kreuther had left, however, and so wewere most pleased to find that all was well. The menu is obviously less Alsatian-inflected,
but still imaginative and outstanding in quality and execution based on our dinner of the other night. The wine list is spectacular, but like all serious NYC restaurants these days, ridiculously
overpriced when you consider the markups, particularly the glass prices. There was, however, one gem at less than $50 a bottle - a Pinot D'Auxerrois which was delicious and complemented our Alsatian tart flambe, chicken and scallops quite well indeed.
Upon arrival, asked if we could sit in main dining room instead of bar room and it was no problem. Four course tasting, food was fabulous. Our main server was fantastic, class act. Wine pairings -- some great, some just ok. Cocktail at the bar afterward, A+. Offer to set us up for a nightcap at exclusive place downtown, gratefully accepted. Amazing, memorable night.
The bar space at the Modern would be a premier fine-dining site almost anywhere else in the US. The service is outstanding across the board. The menu is brief but the Charred Avocado Salad, the Baby Romaine Salad w/Quinoa, and the Scallop entree are standouts. The Almond Tart dessert was kind of ordinary.
We really enjoyed our diner. While the restaurant was busy - the service was personable and efficient. The sommelier was very helpful with the wine list and the food choices are varied and not the normal restaurant fare. We will definitely return to this restaurant.
The Bar Room at The Modern is a favorite. The food is always incredible and the staff is very knowledgeable about the menu and pairing wine. It is great for a special occasion, or can be a go-to for everyday dining, having a meal before or after seeing art at MoMA or a movie at MoMA Film and is very much worth a special trip if you are not at the museum. I love the entrees, but it is also fun to get several smaller plates to share to craft together a meal and try the wonderful selections. Leave room for the amazing sweets and the lovely tea service or coffee to finish off your meal. Tip: If you can't get a reservation or secure a table as a walk-in, the full menu is available at the bar and the service there is just as attentive and special as it is at a table and the seats are remarkably comfortable (and that is a statement from someone who hates bar stools!); I opted for this once, thinking it would be the only time, but it actually my preference at lunch or when dining solo. We dined at a lovely table this visit, with view of the entire restaurant and bar, and close enough to see food going by into the main dining room, The Modern (spectacular for a special occasion), and the Bar Room, as well as seeing the wine service area. Proper service in an elegant yet casual atmosphere. Foodie heaven.
My wife and I decided to eat in the dining room after we started off with a cocktail in the Bar. The service was excellent. We were celebrating our wedding anniversary and they even gave us a card that was signed by the staff. The food was truly delicious, we will be back for sure.
I've been 3 times - all to the Bar Room. What I love most about this restaurant is the service, ie, the people -- from the friendly maitre d' who greeted me when I arrived to the coat check person who graciously refused my tip on my way out. The service here is the best I have experienced in any restaurant, in any country. This is first and foremost a function of the outstanding wait staff and bartenders. They strike me as genuine foodies - describing dishes they've clearly enjoyed, recommending favorites, recommending pairings of food with food and food with wine. The bus staff don't try to act invisible like at many upscale restaurants. They're friendly and seem gladdened by your enjoyment of the food. All waiters keep an eye on your table and check in with you, not just your own. There's never a need to crane your neck to look for "your" waiter. The food is great, the scene is fun and relaxed, and the acoustics better than in most restaurants. Only once, when I was there at 645, pre-theater, was it a little loud for my taste. Could the unique vibe at the Modern have something to do with the no tipping policy? I hope that this policy is good for the staff - better, in fact, than traditional models. They deserve it!
A thoughtfully and creatively composed menu, exquisitely prepared. Unsurpassed drink selection. Gracious and attentive service that studiously avoids crossing the line to intrusive. All in a quintessentially modern space in one of the world’s great museums. What more could one ask for?
Upon arrival I knew it would be a great experience! The staff is wonderful and the food fantastic. There are fantastic selections of small plates to share for those who don't want a large meal, as was the case for us that night. The wine selection by the glass pleasing. Yes, Danny Meyer establishment is going to be stellar. This is up to the high standards one expects. I cannot emphasize enough the wonderful staff. Many thanks!
Great as usual. Sat at the bar and guy next to me recommended a special eau de vie — I must have looked unsure because the barkeeper offered to let me take a whiff. Turned out to be a pure carrot liqueur that was amazing. He then recommended Focal Banger beer. Amazing again. Ended with the lamb sausage. Portions are right sized and delicious! Service cordial and accommodating start to finish. Thank you!
Perfect Midtown Choice
Everything about our meal at the bar room of The Modern was perfect. Our server was knowledgeable as well as personal and prompt. The food was delicious — especially the beef tartare and the sea bass. The restaurant itself is beautiful and comfortable. I’d go again tomorrow and I’d recommend it to anyone looking for a great meal in Midtown.
Zev is one of the bartenders and is a true class act; his recommendations are excellent. Jamie Schwartz recommended a red burgundy I had never tried before and it was a hit for my wife and I . . . thank you for recommending the mugneret-gibroug!! The food is hear is always consistently excellent.
Had a booking for 7:15 pm and had hoped to visit the museum prior - little did we realize it was free night Friday at the MOMA - chaos, not fun!!
However, step into the Modern and all was perfect from there on in...attentive and informed service, wonderful food, good wine choices, nice pace between courses (no pressure) nice space.
We had one of our best NYC meals ever and will return next time we’re back.
It felt special and chic. The service, as expected, is stellar.
The food was really good and what I expected it to be.
Carrot Rilletes were surprisingly tasty. Spicy Steak tartar was stellar and those potatoes...yum!
Tarte Flambe was fine. When it comes down to it, I would skip the brussel sprouts next time cause they weren't special and not really crispy.
We had the scallops, sea bass and lobster....all were truly spectacular. The lobster en croute felt decadent!
