The Modern - Bar Room Ratings and Reviews
Made a special request for quiet table, where we could linger over dinner as I was meeting a long-time friend who I had not seen in years. They were terrific about honoring this. Our server was also terrific - when we asked about recommendations he had an opinion, which is refreshing (you don't always have to like their suggestions, but it is nice to hear a point of view). Highly recommend the tart flambe, charred avocado and the most AMAZING and delicious Mushroom en Croute. Tarte tartin dessert was a bit of a disappointment. Sommelier steered us well on wine. Great night!
We came 10 minutes before the reservation and we were greeted with a happy anniversary wish. I included this when I booked. Our table was not ready and so we had a drink at the bar. The dinner was good, but we had many servers cleaning our table throughout. At one point they cleaned the table as if we were done, but we did not have our entire. We we received our bill it included the drink tab from the bar which I closed out and charged on my card at the bar. How did that happen? Not cool. Good thing we caught it. I would still recommend this place, but not enthusiastically.
Note: the day after I posted this review I received a call from the restaurant manager apologizing and crediting us for the drinks. Great classy move. Very professional.
Wow, we were really disappointed! While they accommodated a change in reservation time the day of to 9pm (graciously), we had 15 min wait; it's a very energetic and happening place, which makes it very hard to wait (NO space near the bar); once seated service became a problem - is this because of the no tipping policy? There is an ARMY of fast paced servers walking about, but no one seemed to notice, so I had to ask a couple of times during our dinner; had to forego dessert as we had a car waiting at 10:30; our starters were marginal; mains much better and quite flavorful ; how unfortunate, thought it would be a great post-theater!
I find even some wonderful places have a hard time keeping up standards after 9pm; everyone seems to wind down, ready to close up.
We had a delicious lunch for a great friend’s birthday. The food was delicious and interesting and all the staff could not have been nicer. The room is chic and beautiful and the ambiance is cool With just the right amount of noise. The whole experience couldnot have been better !
For 2 nights I enjoyed excellent steak tartar made especially for me and very polite, attentive service. Nick the manager came over several times to make sure everything was fine. The second night I had 2 friends join me and we were equally well served.
A great treat for someone from out of town - I wish I lived closer!
Excellent experience. Went with my girlfriend. It is ALWAYS excellent. Creative, artistically presented food. Exceptional attentive - but not intrusive staff - beautiful ambiance. Was told that for every glass of CA wine that was purchased, $2 would be donated to the wildfire relief effort. Very nice and thoughtful touch! Have been frequenting The Modern for years - NEVER disappoints! Once of the best run restaurants in the city!!
I'm from SF and eat out frequently. This was my first time dining at The Modern. The food was excellent. Very tasty, carefully prepared, creative, but not pretentious. Modest portions, but appropriate to the venue. Service was exceptional -- attentive but not intrusive, friendly but not effusive, knowledgeable but not abusive. Brought our own bottle of wine, so didn't have a chance to review the wine list. Table lighting was perfect -- narrow halogen spots that illuminated just the table-top. Noise level was lively but not so loud as to inhibit table conversation. Decor is consistent with the location -- modern. I like that kitchen is visible to the dining area, very well-lit, and finished with white marble rather than stainless steel. Effective stainless steel wrapped sound baffling in open passages between kitchen and dining area prevented kitchen noise from being discernible in the dining area. Long, well-equipped bar with knowledgeable bartenders. I like "tip included" pricing, which is getting more common, at least in SF. But not something restaurants should do, in my view, unless their food and service is consistently very good.
Made a reservation for our family to celebrate my sons 18th birthday. Every aspect, from start to finish was fantastic. Service was top-notch and VERY accommodating. Sommelier made a very good recommendation for an older Bordeaux. Each dish was inspiring from both an ingredient perspective as well as presentation and flavors/textures. Dessert was also wonderful.. After dinner, we lingered at the bar with friends and enjoyed the company and skill of Patrick. We enjoyed some very old bottling(s) of vintage Sherry. A truly memorable evening. Will certainly be back and highly recommend The Modern
The modern has a great, fun atmosphere and the space is beautiful. The staff were friendly and helpful, all very nice. I was actually shocked to read (after eating there) that it has 2 Michelin stars! I had the lobster spaghetti, It was salty and greasy, not good at all, however I did manage to eat all 4 forkfuls of it...I had to.. I was starving! I wanted to order another entree but felt that would be in poor taste, then I toyed with the idea of pretending I didn’t understand the layout of the menu and ordering an appetizer but I couldn’t do that as our waitress had already explained the whole menu to us. My friend had the duck and said it was delicious, (the whole thigh). I filled up on water and boy was I glad I finished the whole bottle because it cost $12. I had a lovely cup of camomile tea and thought to myself “this is special” and it was! So special it cost $9 ( just to clarify that’s 2 inches of water and some leaves). We did have a good time though, mainly laughing at ourselves for not ordering enough food and being so out of touch with reality that we thought plain water was free and tea is still affordable to the common man. Now I know better I’d probably go back to the Modern it’s a great space but I do think their water and tea are overpriced!
The food is perfect! But, unfortunately we had trouble getting our table. The hostess was rude and very disorganized. She sit parties of peole that were walk-ins because and I quote: “familiar faces”. She skipped us several times, until the floor manager noticed out and sat us down.
The waiter was very nice and he did his best to apologize on behalf of the restaurant.
Food is still very good. a lot of confusion around reservation and table. I think they asked us 4 times about our name and table. once we sat down service was attentive and food was great. the tuna sliders, black truffle cavetelli, brussel sprouts, and desserts were great. I haven't been in years and it is still very good. Seats in the bar room are very comfortable as well.
We actually had lunch at the modern - 3 course meal . It was outstanding. My friends from France and Italy , who are very spoiled regarding food where enthrolled . They said it was the best meal they had had in New york and very close to the best 4 star restaurants in europe .
I liked the atmosphere and am looking forward to seeing the garden ,once it is finished.
One particular I thought was refreshing....the tips were included!!! For people that travel ,beign forced to add 20-25% on to a bill is not "charming". One has the impression that the restaurants cannot afford their staff !?
Many thanks for your service .
I love this restaurant a lot. I love the food. The food is of haut cuisine in the sense that the ingredients are so fresh and the preparation and presentations are so gourmet. You are sitting in a very open room with very high ceiling, and very architectural. It is definitely very chic. The service is excellent!! I dont drink, but I am sure they must have a very good wine list. Price is average and affordable. I really love this restaurant. The only thing is I don't see tables larger than 6.
