The Modern - Bar Room Ratings and Reviews
As MOMA members for many years we have dined in the museum fairly often, though with the current culinary team The Bar Room and Dining Room are both so exceptional that we now have lunch or dinner there even when we're not visiting the museum. The food and wine just seem to keep getting better and better and the serving team is always professional, efficient and personable. The room is elegant and the seating is comfortable making the dining experience completely enjoyable.
Extremely inattentive service. Was seated at the table early while awaiting my wife. I was handed a drinks menu, but no one came to take my drinks order despite various waiters passing by my table. After about 10 minutes I had to flag down someone to take my drink order. After my wife arrived, she waited for a while and the same story...despite numerous wait staff passing by our table, no one stopped to ask her for her drink order. After another 10 minutes of this, I had to flag down someone to take her order. The same thing happened again with our food order, had to flag down someone to take our order after waiting for a while with the closed menu in front of us, and it happened again when I tried to order a second glass of wine. My wine glass was empty and despite various wait staff and managers walking by our table no one stopped to ask if I would like to order a second drink. I finally had to flag down the sommelier to place another drink order, after seeing him pass by our table a few times. The wait staff was quick to replace my wineglass, but then no wine. Waited again for a while with the empty wine glass in front of me and finally had a to flag down someone to ask about the status of my drinks order. I think that they should lower the food prices and bring back the optional tip so that I can directly express to the wait staff the level of unsatisfactory service we encountered.
This restaurant is next door to MOMA and is convenient to Radio City Music Hall, but WOW is it expensive. Lunch for two came to $500, but you could have gotten by for about $300 for two for lunch. The food and service overall are excellent. It was a little noisy and you really have to like "modern" to like it. For us it was a little too stark an atmosphere. If money is not a concern I would recommend this restaurant
The food was top notch at the bar room, but the signature USHG hospitality was not there.
We had missing utensils--we were served the foie gras tortellini with the brodo, but no soup spoon to enjoy it with. We also had to search for a server to get our water glasses filled multiple times.
We felt ignored most of the meal. Also mentioned that we are recovering and no longer drink alcoholic beverages, but not substitutes were offered.
Our experience was a lot different from other USHG meals we have had before.
Great place for a special occasion. We were celebrating an anniversary and they sent out a lovely dessert plate. The food was absolutely delicious. We were a little surprised they sat us at a small, middle table for 2 when it was only 5pm and pretty empty. So we should have asked for a nicer table. But it really was a wonderful experience.
I was on a tight time table as I had a train to catch. After telling the waiter that, he did everything he could to get me out on time, and he totally delivered. Some of the best service I've ever had in a NYC restaurant. And with just an open table res, we had a very good table, and great food. My only negative is that it is hard to find many affordable wines on their list - almost everything is 3 digits.
Truly oustanding service, very attentive and unobtrusive at the same time. The staff is very professional and really shows that the no-tipping model can work well. The food was excellent and the dining room just just vibrant and noisy enough to be interesting and quiet enough to easily focus on the person/people you are with. Will definitely go back!
Phenomenal food and wine. I eat at the Modern often, and this was one of the best meals I've ever had there, or anywhere, for that matter. And the service was top notch as always. Our sommelier Barbara in particular was extremely knowledgeable and very astute in helping us choose the perfect wines to accompany our meal. We can't wait to go back!
Made a special request for quiet table, where we could linger over dinner as I was meeting a long-time friend who I had not seen in years. They were terrific about honoring this. Our server was also terrific - when we asked about recommendations he had an opinion, which is refreshing (you don't always have to like their suggestions, but it is nice to hear a point of view). Highly recommend the tart flambe, charred avocado and the most AMAZING and delicious Mushroom en Croute. Tarte tartin dessert was a bit of a disappointment. Sommelier steered us well on wine. Great night!
We came 10 minutes before the reservation and we were greeted with a happy anniversary wish. I included this when I booked. Our table was not ready and so we had a drink at the bar. The dinner was good, but we had many servers cleaning our table throughout. At one point they cleaned the table as if we were done, but we did not have our entire. We we received our bill it included the drink tab from the bar which I closed out and charged on my card at the bar. How did that happen? Not cool. Good thing we caught it. I would still recommend this place, but not enthusiastically.
Note: the day after I posted this review I received a call from the restaurant manager apologizing and crediting us for the drinks. Great classy move. Very professional.
Wow, we were really disappointed! While they accommodated a change in reservation time the day of to 9pm (graciously), we had 15 min wait; it's a very energetic and happening place, which makes it very hard to wait (NO space near the bar); once seated service became a problem - is this because of the no tipping policy? There is an ARMY of fast paced servers walking about, but no one seemed to notice, so I had to ask a couple of times during our dinner; had to forego dessert as we had a car waiting at 10:30; our starters were marginal; mains much better and quite flavorful ; how unfortunate, thought it would be a great post-theater!
I find even some wonderful places have a hard time keeping up standards after 9pm; everyone seems to wind down, ready to close up.
We had a delicious lunch for a great friend’s birthday. The food was delicious and interesting and all the staff could not have been nicer. The room is chic and beautiful and the ambiance is cool With just the right amount of noise. The whole experience couldnot have been better !
