My partner and I dined at MoMAs Bar Room (not to be confused with the other Bar Room) Saturday evening. The 3 courses for $70 represented great value and we didn't come away hungry still.
Attentive service and not a noisy ambience it was a wonderful meal. The steak tartare was delicious.
Food is beautifully presented but portions are small and menu is limited
Gorgeous, creative food, very good wine list, terrific service.
We appreciated a very nice quiet table given to us graciously by the hostess. The food was outstanding, the dining room beautiful, and service very good. This will become a new regular stop when we come to NYC.
MOMA ‘s Modern Bar is incredibly welcoming and the service is outstanding! We met for drinks and had some little snacks but we were never rushed and we enjoyed lots of time great company and a lovely restaurant in which to spend time!
It was a great value since we had the three courses plus the wine pairing to go along with it. The food was good. Perfect portions for lunch with the ladies. My least favorite was the desserts (everyone tasted each persons). My favorites were the charred avocado and the sea bass.
However, it would have been better if the service matched. Our waiter was good at explaining what was on our plates but the extra note I had about it being my friend’s birthday wasn’t acknowledged. I’m not looking for anything free— just a ‘happy birthday’ on her dessert would have been great. Something to note that this was a special occasion. I’ve made this notation on the open table reservation as well as the phone call to confirm our lunch. When we arrived, we waited a few minutes and no greeting. When we sat down, nothing on the table to mention it being a special occasion. When we received our desserts, there was no mention of my friend’s birthday. Oh well.
Lastly I didn’t like being yelled at as we exited the restaurant because I guess the museum was also closing. I’m not trying to get in the museum; I’m trying to find the exit out. Please watch your tone!
Outstanding from the service to the food
The menu was imaginative, and extraordinarily well prepared. The service was friendly, attentive and effective. The tour of the kitchen was a special treat.
Always a great experience. The Bar side of the Modern is less formal but no less superb; it also offers a pre fixe option or off the menu. Every dish is thoughtful, restrained and perfectly executed. I especially like the great wine list and bar. I always get great food pairings and the drink list is interesting. I highly recommend after a an hour or two at MoMA, or any time.
The tables were a little close for such a fine restaurant. The starter was good, not outstanding like the other two courses. Portions were perfect. We also appreciated that we were offered more of the excellent bread and butter. Overall I would place it between very good and outstanding. I definitely will come back.
Usually this is a 5-star place for us but we were a bit disappointed this round. Group dining and our initial service was very prompt. Trying to beat the theater clock and after not ordering promptly after sit down, we had to wait 20-30 min for server to follow back up. Had to wait about 25 min for second course to come out after first. We barely made theater and 2 last courses were super rushed. We gave ourselves 1:40 for dinner so this shouldn’t have been the case. Dessert was mediocre but other dishes were good. We love the vibe of this place and will likely return. Hope it wasn’t a sign of good restaurant going south.
Room is a touch cold - maybe it was me that sort of ruined the impression
The food is well presented with very diverse dishes and the wine pairings are a real treat - wine Somm explains each course
A really wonderful dining experience
But I think the food has become more complicated. A 2-star syndrome?
We were originally seated near the bar and it was extremely noisy, however, when we mentioned this
to our waiter, Ben, we were moved to the rear of the room. A problem with almost all NYC restaurants
Delicious food, exceptional service and wonderful wine. Highly recommend the wine pairing option with your meal. Thank you for a memorable lunch.
Food was great and service was very good even though no tips are accepted in this restaurant.
The downside was the wine list, which is extensive but starts with $180 bottles and goes up from there, way up. The by-the-glass selection was very limited. We ended up taking the wine pairing option, and were served by a sommelier with an attitude problem.
The 3 course dining option was amazing, it was my boyfriend's birthday and they gave him an extra dessert. Very thoughtful
Great food and polite service
One of the best bar and restaurant scenes in the city. The bar is just beautiful to look and sit at. The bartenders are real bartenders and know their ingredients and how to put them together. And super friendly. Great, good-looking crowd of all ages. The Bar Room food is exquisite, smallish portions and, yes, overpriced. But keep in mind that those prices include gratuity, so it all equalizes to an acceptable price/value. Always knowledgeable and friendly servers. But the noise level. Whoa. Between the bar noise and the dining noise, it is too much. All in all, this is a fantastic place to drink, eat and enjoy.
It took us 2 hours to finish lunch. Service was extremely slow. The main dishes arrived cold...Finally they didn’t charge us for them. Bad day for the kitchen I believe.
Great food. Period. Ordered the sea bass with the ginger sauce and it was really outstanding
I was able to add a person last minute with no problem. The wait staff was incredibly knowledgeable with every question we asked. I really appreciated that the chef was flexible enough to make my meal dairy free and the results were delicious. Thanks for a great experience!
Initial experience with The Modern a number of years ago drove very high expectations which were met, in the main, with lunch in The Bar Room. Exceptional food, beautifully presented. The overall impression was slightly diminished by slightly less than attentive service and a sense that the facility felt a bit worn - the top of our table rather badly needed to be refinished.
With that said, we would certainly return in the hope that The Modern's truly exceptional nature would shine through.
Lovely Ambience- initially we were concerned “the bar room” would be too noisy to enjoy dinner conversation, however this was the complete opposite and was such a perfect open room with great ambience- to have Great service- the server was patient and attentive and made our first time to the Modern Bar room one that we would all do again on our next visits to town. excellent wine selections for pairing- perfect timing
The service was impeccable, the food delicious as always and as we had been called beforehand to check the occasion they brought out birthday treats for our guests. We have always enjoyed dining at the restaurant and bar at The Modern.
The 3 of us arrived a few minutes early for our reservation, and we were given seats in a lounge area to wait. That was fine, but the place was very busy and we had to wait awhile for our drinks. Servers were nice but they seemed like they were a bit overwhelmed or understaffed. We were finally seated and we ordered a salad to share and the scallops and chicken. The salad had a nice dressing but there wasn't much of it. The scallops were good but they were served lukewarm as was my chicken. I also didn't care for the chicken. It didn't help that it was a bit pink, so I was afraid that it was slightly undercooked. Unfortunately, the waiter NEVER returned to check on us so we just decided to eat and get out. As I shelled out about $220 for this New York dining experience, I felt more than a little annoyed. The receptionist asked me how my dinner was and I told her. She gave me her card and told me she would make sure our food was hot next time. That was nice of her, but there will not be a next time for me at the Bar at the Modern.
The portions were miniscule but delicious. The crab appetizer has 2 teaspoons of crab. The scallop main course had 3 scallops for $40!
Went for a special anniversary occasion and they did not disappoint. Got a great table -- and an anniversary dessert -- soppy and wonderful. It was just what we were hoping for...
This has become my favorite spot for a business lunch in Manhattan. The food is imaginative and beautifully prepared, the service is smart and attentive, and the location is ideal.
We had a lovely lunch. My only complaint was being seated and then waiting almost 10 minutes for anyone to offer us water. Our server was good, service was good, the food was good, but the first ten minutes felt like an eternity as servers passed by our table multiple times and water felt so far out of reach.
Great place, very trendy and relatively informal for a 2 star restaurant. if you are looking for a great 2 star place, you will be disappointed. My food was very good but uninspired for a 2 star. I do rely on the Michelin guide from time to time and this place should be a soft 1 star or there next lower rating.
Lovely luncheon for friends especially before visiting MOMA
As usual, this restaurant never disappoints. Excellent, interesting dishes, prepared to highest standards. Amazingly warm, efficient staff, in spite of the usual crowding and clamor. Be prepared to spend some money, but if you're looking for a great meal in a sophisticated, exciting atmosphere, this is your place
My friends and I went on a whim to celebrate our friend getting into grad school and it was a dream. The scallops were cooked to perfection and the coconut lemongrass sorbet was the best way to end the night. We will be back.
Overall ok.. service was very good, agreeable/funny and helpful when not distracted or forgetful..
I love this room, especially the flowers. The food is beautiful and the service professionally done (refolded napkin, etc.). This visit disappointed in one regard: dessert. The ice cream had melted and was a soppy puddle on the plate, and the dessert course arrived after a long wait, for which the waiter apologized. Not sure if there is a connection, but... Just one item not up to the usual standard, so I'm still recommending The Bar Room at The Modern.
As usual food and service was excellent and impressive wine list.
Everything was great.
The crab avocado, the scallops and lettuce salad were great.
The service was be there in 10+
Cavatelli was just okay; however I’m not a pasta fan..
What great food! Wow! Every course was tasty, beautifully presented and a nice size portion. We thought that we may have given up something by sitting in the Bar Room, but we were not at all disappointed. Great service and atmosphere too!
