The Mission – Old Town Scottsdale Ratings and Reviews
A trendy scene with tasty food. The indoor area can be noisy with a high energy level. Seating is close so you'll be sharing your neighbor's conversation. The shrimp appetizer, flat iron steak and filet were all very good. We also enjoyed the fried banana dessert. The service was pretty good. Our server was very nice though a bit distracted by the guests at the table next door so we had to wait for service at times. Generally a good experience.
We had been to The Mission when it first opened and weren't sold on it. Kept hearing that it was great and had no luck getting
a reservation for a Saturday night. So this time I booked two weeks in advance. The Mission is just wonderful. The table-side-made guacamole was delicious. We ordered the pork tacos for two. Delicious! The best part was the side of corn recommended
by our waiter. Superb!
The husband and I dined here while on vacation and were immediately enchanted by the soft warm lighting and dark, modern decor. The noise level was slightly too much. It was a little too dark for eating, actually, but at least our attentive server was ready with tiny flashlights for reading the menu. The crispy cola pork appetizer was delicate and tasty, if a bit stingy for $12. The pork shoulder for two was melt-in-your-mouth tender and served with 10 mini-corn tortillas and other fixings. For dessert, he had the espresso churros, as sophisticated a presentation of chocolate as I've ever seen. I ordered the pumpkin bread pudding and can honestly say it was the best bread pudding I've ever tasted (and I've had a lot of bread pudding).
We had the Sunday Pig Out and we all enjoyed it... the tortillas were fresh and the pork was delish. The only suggestion would be to have a side dish.... maybe some beans or rice to go with the pork. The guacamole was great too.
The woman serving the pork was very friendly and helpful.
When we asked our waiter at Casa Mia for other restaurats to try, he told us to head to The Mission. We were thrilled with his recommendation. First off, our waitress, Angie, was terrific. We told the restaurant so by leaving a comment card. The food was outstanding and represented higher end latin cuisine without losing the earthy flavors that make this type of food so comforting. We truly enjoyed every single item we ordered, from the tableside guacamole, to the street corn appetizer, to two types of tacos and, finally, a fabulous pumpkin bread pudding dessert. We look forward to returning.
The food and service were great. A few drawbacks, though. First, the tables are very close together. Often, when diners of adjacent tables get up, you end up with someone's rear end in your face. Plus, it is very noisy. This is excacerbated by the close proximity of the tables, you hear every word being said. Makes it distracting and hard to have your own conversation. Nice place, but for the price, diners should have just a little space.
We've visited The Mission three times. The first time it was FABULOUS! The second time they turned us away (although the place was empty) because they were afraid they wouldn't have room for reservations that were coming in 90 minutes. The third time we made reservations and they STILL had hesitations about seating us because others might be coming in later with reservations and they were changing shifts. Wow! Is that how one treats customers? So disappointing after our first wonderful experience.
I loved the short rib tacos, my wife liked the scallop tacos. We also had the table side guacamole which was good and fresh but I'm not certain worthy of the rave reviews. The food was enjoyable, tasty, and of fair value. The list of Scottsdale greats should include the Mission but there is still room on top of the list.
I used to travel to Phoenix and really like this place but it hasn't been the same for the past year. This trip, the host hands the floppy menu right over a wine glass which causes it to fall and break on my wife's foot. Luckily my wife didn't get too hurt other than some superficial scrapes. We didn't see any scrapes while at the restaurant cause it was so dark I could barely read the menus with the candle light. The wait staff didn't even talk to the manager nor did the manager even stop by. They don't even serve us one of the appetizers we asked for until the end of dinner. (Really?) Finally, my wife's chicken tacos tasted like they reheated it from an old batch of chicken and it even had very small chicken bones still in it.
What a wonderful experience! From the housemate fresh guacamole ( which was some of the best I have ever had) to the hand made tortillas, everything was good about our experience. The waiter was very attentive and seemed excited about the menu choices and drink options. I would recommend the Mission to anyone. Good for romantic dinners or a business lunch.
This was our first time here with another couple and we not only enjoyed the food but our server was one of the best we have had in a long time! We have been very upset lately when we dine out with the lack of decent service we get and this was so refreshing! He was prompt, polite, funny and very knowledgeable about the menu. We came here for lunch, it was not too busy but we had reservations and got seated quickly. Drinks, food and service perfect!!! Wish we lived closer but will defiantely be back!
A group of 7 of us had a late lunch on a Saturday afternoon. Service was outstanding! The guacamole prepared tableside was great. Each of us had a taco dish, ranging from grilled shrimp to skirt steak to chicken, and all were very good. I'll go out of my way to emphasize that the service was great, as was the food - - we would love to go back to The Mission if we find ourselves in the area again!
We were seated at reserved time. The appetizers were VERY good, but the cocktails and atmosphere need tweaking. The overall atmosphere...warm but the layout is cramped. Very few tables for more than 2 people and they are set close together....if larger seating is needed, they just pull tables together. But the 2-tops are so close , that it is difficult to have a private conversation. The couple next to me and my fiance were having what seemed like a first date and I can tell you all about both of their children and plans for the next day. Secondly, I understand efficiency, but with several wait staff in addition to waitress, it really felt like we were part of an assembly line. Cocktails were watered down. I make much better Sangria!
The Mission interior is so dark you are offered a light to read the menu; too dark to enjoy the interior decor. Tables too close to each other. While tasty, the tacos were so small they should've been listed as an appetizer not an entree. I wouldn't return.
Our meal at The Mission was amazing! Our waitress recommended the crispy pork appetizer, and it did not disappoint. Our entrees were fantastic, very unique. My personal favorite, though, was our dessert of churros and espresso milkshake. To die for! The only negative is that the restaurant is very loud. Not a good place for a quiet dinner. The ladies at the table next to us were literally screaming. A little too much to drink, I think. ;-) Great meal overall.
What a great menu, ambiance, and top notch service to boot! Three of us started by sharing a Tequila Flight that took through a range of ages of Tequila. Then we shared an amazing Duck Empanada appetizer. For dinner we shared the pork tacos (truly unbelievable) as well as the scallop tacos. Finally ended with Fried Bananas. Good from start to finish.
The food and decor were wonderful. We happened to be seated next to a gentleman who was unable to use his inside voice, which didn't allow for the free flow of conversation at our own table, but that is the luck of the draw at a busy venue. We will definitely be back.
The Mission was overall a great experience. Food was great! Sam our waiter was amazing! So personable, attentive, knowledgable and cool! Strawberry coconut mojito was great! Best mojito I've had and mojitos are my go to drink every restaurant I go to so I've had at least 100 different mojitos from various retaurants in my short 30 years. You can't go wrong by going here!
The best restaurant ever! Our server Angela has to be one of the best servers we've had serve us. It was our first time & she navigated both myself & my husband through there menu with great excitement & knowledge! She even brought us hot towels for our hands after we had the wings. The food was amazing!!!! It was our anniversary & Angela surprised us w/a pumpkin bread pudding & a sparkler, a great way to top off our anniversary! Can't wait to come back! I've already told at least a dozen people already! Keep up the good work!
We love The Mission, and it is always a stop for us when we are in that area. Obviously the end of July is NOT the season to sit outside, but it was cool inside and our lunch was w great! The ONLY thing I disliked about our visit today was the too close proximity of other diners along the wall. Those tables are just too close together and other conversations were bumping into each other. If they had opened the other section, it would have helped spread things out nicely.
First I love food! I was anticipating great a great experience at this restaurant as I had heard wonderful things. I am not a critical person and never write negative things. However, when I received the phone call confirming and was told our dining experience would be 1 hour and 45 minutes I was a bit put off. Never have I ever had someone do that to us. This was a business dinner and there is no guarantee how long that takes. How do you do that? Tell everyone ok, we are done. Not ok! I ordered the butternut squash tacos and they were awful. My husband ordered the Portobello tacos and they were terrible too. No taste, hard tortillas and not even average, truly awful. Truly disappointing and won't go back.
I made the reservation for me and 3 others for a birthday. They talked down to us because we wanted to alter the menu. I couldn't eat part of my meal because I don't usually eat stale bread. They offered chips and salsa when we sat down. I had no idea there was a charge until they brought the bill. I won't be going back but at least I got to try a different form of cuisine.
Vacationing in AZ, wanted to have a special dinner before flying home on the red eye. Walking through the entry we were transported from the quiet of a Scottsdale Monday evening to a bustling hive of lively diners. The building, decor, and ambience are wonderful, even if a little dark. Wait service excellent -- friendly & attentive. We shared pork belly in a lettuce cup as a starter -- incredible texture and unbelievable flavors. I had the chorizo porchetta and my partner had the braised shortribs -- both cooked PERFECTLY, again tastes and textures out of this world! We also shared a side dish of torreados, a nice way of taking the heat up. Fantastic dining & esthetic experience. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
