The Mission – Old Town Scottsdale Ratings and Reviews
Looks like there is an amazing interior, but it was a bit dark to really enjoy it. Bring a flashlight to see the menu, you will need it! We arrived at 5:30 and it was pretty empty...even so, we initially felt rushed. We didn't even have our drinks and we were asked to order our food. Later, as it got busier, we were well-attended with good timing. Same with the music. The music was very loud when we first arrived and seriously nerve-jangling. As it got busier, the music choice was calmer and the volume was more conducive to conversation. Food was beautiful on the plate, and very tasty. The side of poblano grits with horseradish were the highlight. There were three of us (60-yr old women) and we shared a tableside prepared guacamole (very good!), we each had two drinks, a taco entrée and a side, and we almost hit $200 (incl. tip.) Not inexpensive at all. We cleaned our plates, and walked away full, but not overly so. My 35 year-old son would have had to order something more substantial. Overall, a neat place, but it's pretty low on the value scale. Wish I could have seen it in the daylight.
The table side guacamole was really good, but I thought $14 was on the pricey side. They do put so many unique ingredients that most guacamoles never have, so it's at least worth it to try it once. They do give you complimentary chips and salsa. The salsa is awesome.
We had the grouper and it was delicious. The brussels sprouts were grilled and some were pickled and there were so many textures and flavors in the dish. The fingerling potatoes with chorizo sounds awesome and they were tasty, but the oiliness of it was a bit overpowering.
We had a wonderful experience at The Mission! The food was fantastic, our waiter was outstanding and the atmosphere was somewhat dark inside but very cozy. The guacamole is made at your table and was the best I have ever had including in Mexico. A five star place for sure and although difficult to get a reservation, it is totally worth going at any time you are able to get in..we went at 545 pm!! Cant wait to go again!
Giving service 1 star not due to our table server but due to the poor customer interface with the hostess and the manager. Arrived 5 minutes early for an 8:45 reservation for a party of 5. Was told our table was not ready. 20 minutes later I was still told our table was not ready. Pointed out 10 available seats (that had been available when I walked in as well) at the communal table by the bar. I was told that was reserved for a party of 10 for 8:45. Inquired why we could not sit there as we were on time (early actually), I was told it was reserved. I said I had a reserved table too, but am still awaiting seating in the lobby. Asked to speak with manager who reluctantly allowed us to sit at the communal table after I expressed my displeasure repeatedly.
Just overall poor handling of the situation by the hostess and the manager. Didn't offer anything in compensation nor return to ask how things were for us. On a side note our service once we were seated was great. I've dined here several times and have never had a bad experience before. Turns out the 10 top was a "no-show". Bottom line, seat your reservations in order of arrival. If you're late, than that's on you and you wait for those who arrived on time to finish.
We are never disappointed at The Mission. On this trip we were meeting friends from out of town for a Sunday brunch. We wanted a place with interesting, tasty food, good drinks and a place we could talk. Everyone enjoyed the table-side made guacamole and huevos rancheros. Our friends said it was the best guacamole they had ever had, which is what we always say. The service was attentive without being intrusive. We love The Mission.
The Mission was an excellent place for a large group to celebrate my dad's birthday. The food is amazing and well crafted. The Brussel Sprout tacos and the cheese platter were particular hits and layered with flavor. Extensive drink menu and quick and courteous service. We will definitely be back.
Food, and service were over the top! (Guacamole dip made @ The table awesome!)
Noise level was high...
Open air ceilings, and hard wood floors attributed to this!
Way too dark in the main dining area! (Flashlight to read menu, could really see the delicious food!)
Fortunately our waiter had flashlights for all of us at the table - impossible to read the menus without them. Good food, but pricey, Service was a tad slow between drinks and meal. But we had a table of seven, so plenty of good conversation to pass the time. Overall a fun experience to check off - but since we were not residents, not sure how this compares to similar places in Scottsdale.
Creative cocktails with a diverse, albeit limited, craft beer selection (1-2 beers representing different styles). The street tacos are the best bet as the entrees, while flavorful, seem somewhat lacking. I had the Chorizo Porchetta which was simply a good sized portion of rather dry pork shoulder and a very small serving of
a white bean puree. In the past, when dinning with another couple, we've selected the tacos (3 to an order), paid extra for a 4th taco, each ordered a different protein, and we then shared 1 of our tacos with the other 3 allowing each 4 different tacos rather than 4 of the same.
I dined alone and I had one of the best experiences I have ever had dining. The food was amazing, the lighting and music were perfect. I wanted to take pictures but I was seated inside and it was too dark but that just helped me focus on my food. Just note that this is a higher cost place so if you go plan on taking your time and enjoying your food. The cost is 100% worth it. I spent over 100$ dining alone, I had 2 drinks, 1 appetizer, the table side guacamole, the Honey Chipotle grits and then my main course the braised Rib Tacos. So, I had enough food for 2 people.
I am in love with this place, can't wait to return.
My son and I went for dinner and we had a reservation so there was no wait but everytime we have been there it is busy. We started with their table side guacamole which is amazing. We get it every time and often get a double order it's so good. My son got the street tacos and I got the filet. As always their food was excellent and the wait staff is efficient and friendly. We also had a couple of their signature margaritas which are also quite good. We frequently visit and are never disappointed.
I've been to The Mission a handful of times and have always loved it! My boyfriend however had never been, so I figured it would be a fun place for us to go to celebrate our 1st anniversary as I've been wanting to bring him here for a long time. We were greeted by our very friendly waitress who wished us a happy anniversary and then sent over two lovely glasses of champagne for the both of us. We were not expecting this whatsoever, so we were very appreciative of the sweet gesture.
I have been telling him for months how incredible the food is here and the chefs and the staff did not disappoint! We were both in food heaven with every dish that we ordered! It was such an incredibly memorable night that we'll never forget. We don't get to go out to nice restaurants or have fancy date nights all that often so we were extremely thankful for the wonderful evening we had at The Mission. Thank you for the great service and exceptional food! We'll definitely be back soon!
