Very nice restaurant with great ambiance and it wasn’t too crowded or noisy so you could still have a conversation without yelling across the table. The drinks were good as well as the food. I ordered the steak and asked for it to be cooked medium but it came out very rare. I sent it back and they brought me another steak that was slightly less rare but still not medium. I ate it anyway and it was still quite good. My wife ordered the sea bass and it was delicious, and we had the bread pudding for two which was also very good. The only reason I can’t give five stars is because the waiter was very inattentive and they didn’t prepare the food the way I had asked. Overall it was still a good time and I would still come back.
It's a beautiful place, and the food is also delicious - a nice combination. The Fall Salad was a true taste sensation - a treat for the senses. Service was terrific. Our only complaint is that we were at a drafty, cool table, on a not terribly cold night. The restaurant is a warm and wonderful one and so the cool drafts were a bit surprising.
very good, just a little pricey and a little too limited on menu
Very loud, we had the worst table location (should have asked to be moved). Table of five round could hear only the person next to me. Off night with the kitchen. Very very chewy filet of beef special. (Three of us ordered it and it really was a bad cut). The server we had
We LOVED this hidden gem! The food was fantastic, and the ambiance is stunning. Service was a bit slow, but overall I would HIGHLY recommend!!
They're a nice addition to the neighborhood, with good food and friendly service, so I hope they stay around for many a year. Though they may screw up a drink order and forget to take it off the check, their hearts are in the right place and will do whatever it takes to make your experience there a good one . The place is very spacious with high ceilings so it wasn't as cozy, quiet and intimate as we would have liked for our anniversary, but it was uplifting to see everyone around us having a good time nevertheless. Next time I want to get a seat upfront by the window or sit in the bar area. I think that's more my speed.
An outstanding restaurant with great food choices, excellent accommodating staff and a beautiful atmosphere. A little pricey but well worth it.
It had been a while since I’d gone to the Milling Room. The food is still excellent but I was surprised by how expensive it’s become. I’m not sure I’ll be returning.
LOVE the squash soup with mushrooms... and the bread and pastries are fresh and delicious.
Six stars to the manager and staff, who knew how to handle a small crisis – a broken glass and a spilled bottle of red wine – the meal went on as if nothing had happened, and we plan to return.
PS. The food was excellent, the room is beautiful, it was possible to have a conversation without shouting, what more can one ask?

The Milling Room is a comfortable restaurant with an unusual structure. The service is very good indeed and so is the food. It is very noisy, in the fashion of all NYC restaurants, even with the high ceilings to dampen it. Two of us enjoyed our dinner there very much and will return.
This was a great choice for Thanksgiving! Menu had something for everyone and the service was attentive. Terrific menu!
Sunday, family dinner. 6 adults. Have not been in a while and very pleased. Can but loud but that night it was mellow. Food excellent and service very very good.
Great, attentive service!
We are regulars at the Milling Room and we hope our last experience there was an exception... Our waiter was extremely attentive and warm; his service was impeccable. I wish we could say the same for the food, but unfortunately the dishes were very uneven. We shared quite a few among the 4 of us: appetizers/sides (paprika potatoes and fig/pear/straciatella salad) were really tasty, the steak was well-cooked and good but the caccio e Pepe pasta was inedible (flavorless and as if warmed up in the microwave oven), while the veal ragu pasta was overcooked and far from memorable. The place and the atmosphere are still really appreciable.
Whilst the food was good and the general atmosphere in the main part of the dining room was good (it was a Saturday night), the service was off hand and board line and snotty. We were visiting NY for a weekend and it was booked for our last night as a 'special' end to the trip. To be honest, it ruined the the evening. We were polite and friendly, however, I don't know whether it was because we had children with us (12 how it was served... portion sizes.. etc. I definitely would not go back and would not recommend it to a friend. We ate and left promptly. We weren't offered desserts of tea/coffee. Not the worst experience I've ever had, but for the standard of restaurant and cost, it was very disappointing.
Excellent food
I lived the stake and the salad was very tasty
The food and service was amazing- and what a magical space!
I normally try to avoid eating on the Upper West Side, since it’s almost impossible to find a place that’s very good, and even the places of mid-range quality tend to be grossly overpriced compared to what you’d find in almost any other NYC neighborhood. I often end up spending a ton for something decidedly mediocre. But I was pleasantly surprised to discover that food at the Milling Room is actually quite good—better than anything I’ve previously been able to find on the UWS in 20+ years of living in New York—and it’s on the pricey side but not totally unreasonable, which is also a surprise for this neighborhood. The food was fresh, perfectly prepared, interesting and nuanced, and the service was attentive without being aggressive. They also serve cocktails and accept credit cards, neither of which can be said of the otherwise decent Italian places in the neighborhood.
Food was great! Definitely on my calendar in a few weeks. Service staff was very pleasant and friendly.
Give this place a try, you won't be disappointed.
Terrific food and service. Room is very noisy and the food took a long time to arrive (not servers fault).
Servers were friendly, nice menu, good food. We arrived on the earlier side for dinner and restaurant was quiet. But as it got more crowded the nice level increased. Tables are a bit close
The food was solid, if undistinguished. Service was slow. The room is grand and impressive, but the acoustics are rough. Nothing to complain about, but nothing to make it to the top of my hit parade.
The positives: the restaurant is beautiful, the lighting is flattering, and the layout is really nice. The wine list was decent and the oysters on special were divine. Yet they were served without the proper raw bar ice so we recovered them in a watery bowl with half the ice already melted.
The negatives: food was very overpriced. We ordered the cacio e pepe and it was oily yet dry. It was horrifying. Our server couldn’t make any recommendations for us which was bizarre for such an expensive restaurant. Had she ever tried the food? She was very inattentive. The wait for our food was also far too long, especially for the simplicity of the pasta we ordered. She also had to pull out her cell phone to use the flashlight in order to see the wine we were requesting.
Verdict: SKIP THIS PLACE.
Architectually beautiful restaurant with great food! Wonderful ambience, fun brunch!
Breakfast/Brunch
Awesome restaurant, beautiful room, great food and great service, definitely going back
Beautiful restaurant, the noise level was fine so we could talk, unfortunately the food was not worth the price at all, we ordered the seafood pasta and the butternut squash and both dishes were very bland, nothing special at all and would definitely not come back to eat. The restaurant was also very cold.
delicious unusual choices, pleasant wait staff, never rushed
Perfect for every occasion!
I arrived and sat on the bar for a bit. The server came and I ordered a glass of wine, but the decor of the bar area is kind of boring. So, I was very happy when I was brought to the dinner area. It was Friday so it was very busy (I made a reservation), many couples and larger groups. I think I was the only person eating solo. The servers were nice and suggested the sea bass with chanterelles, wine sauce, grapes and leaks. It was delicious with the fish perfectly cooked. I also ordered a side of carrots. The dessert that called most my attention was the bread pudding, but it was for 2, so I skipped desert. The other ones were not very exciting - creme brulee, chocolate cake and so on. Glad I chose this place. Worth the visit.
Beautiful space with average food and average service
My favorite restaurant UWS....it has both a great bar and a lovely dinning room. It's the perfect neighborhood restaurant for the area.
Super pleasant
Excellent food, service and atmosphere. Really enjoyed our meal and nice evening.
We loved this place. It's a bit pricier than we usually like to pay, but there's a great happy hour, and the food is plentiful enough that sharing is possible. When we went (early on Vet's day) it was super-quiet. But it is the ambiance and service that makes the place fabulous - it is absolutely lovely, and the waitstaff is kind, generous, funny, attentive when you want them but not intrusive otherwise. The food was terrific although we didn't sample a lot of it. I'm planning to go back soon, and it's also excellent for large parties and groups.
What a find! The high glass enclosed ceilings of the spacious and inviting back room and the excellent food were really a wonderful combo. We could hear each other at dinner and and we were allowed to linger. That said, this would be a great place for a large party as well. Branzino and octopus sauce/ sides and prep were excellent. The salad big enough to share and the service-perfect! We will be back soon.
Beautiful venue. We were there to interview a job candidate and saw another table of colleagues who were also there to interview a job candidate. The experience is great for a work dinner and great to show off the types of beautiful restaurants here in New York and on the UWS. The food was fine but not outstanding, save the excellent steak. I had the scallops - they were fine but a bit overcooked and the dish as a whole was not seasoned well. More vegan options would be a plus - two colleagues were vegetarian and had salad for dinner. I would have liked them to have more choices on the menu.
Had a 12:30pm reservation for a special brunch for a reunion of friends (only 5 of us). Long delay to be greeted. After 20 minutes, we had to ask to place a drink order.
There was virtually zero welcome or introduction of the menu even though none of us had been there before. Purely an "order taking" situation.
You know there is something wrong when we were more enthusiastic about the food and experience than the server. Food and cocktails rarely served to the correct person. Zero sense of interest from the server throughout the meal. No thank you. Dropped off the check very quickly.
For a $400 brunch, it was rough. We loved the food and drinks but wouldn’t go back.
This is my favorite UWS restaurant— lovely open space, excellent and always novel food, super service and fair prices....what’s not to love!?!!
