About The Merchant
The Merchant is a big space that served for more than a century as a leather store. We've brought in high-top tables near the windows ... a 40-foot bar on one side of the room … and more formal dining spots on the opposite side. We have a semi-private dining room in back, and another dining room downstairs. For our menu, we make almost all of our fare from scratch. Executive chef Ignacio Lopez previously worked at both Beat Hotel in Cambridge and Tuscan Kitchen in Burlington. Chef Lopez cures and smokes all the meat in house. Our burger is top-notch, as are other dishes like Parisian gnocchi, Slow Roasted Chicken Breast, and Steak Frites. The Merchant serves salads, sandwiches ($10-$15), and more for the lunch rush. And for dinner, we are a full-service brasserie (with most entrees ranging from $22-$28). The bar has 36 beers on tap, many of them locally brewed, plus a full selection of craft cocktails to serve our patrons, especially the after-work crowd.

The Merchant Ratings and Reviews
We both ordered the pan seared cod. The entrees were delicious, but the portion is more "European". When I can finish an entree easily, most people would be disappointed with the portion. This is especially true because it is $26. Our server was wonderful! I wish I remembered his name. There are too many restaurants who are in the same price range, but give you more.
Great food but loud restaurant. It was Friday night at 6pm, so the happy hour crowd was very noisy. Also the view of the bar from the restaurant is a bit annoying as there are a half dozen TV screens. The food was excellent and worth it but not the quiet romantic spot I was looking for.
I went for business lunch and food and service very good. We were easily finished in an hour. I would definitely return.
My only issue is that they will not seat you until your whole party arrives which means by 12:05 it is a confused mob-scene at the door and reception. I don't know any other restaurant around town that does this and I wish they would change that policy.
First time here and a total surprise. While it was noisy and bar-like the food itself was SUPERB. Some of the best we've had in Boston. The wait-staff were friendly, but not overly useful. But I'll take the former over useful but stand-offish. Food was delivered quickly, plates were removed quickly but there was no pressure to move on. All-in-all a delightful place.
The restaurant was nice and not crowded for a Saturday evening. The food was adequate. I thought the service was slightly lacking in quality but nothing that would keep me from returning. The waiter did not seem to know the specials and I had to ask about them.
I thought the menu was limited but the overall evening was fine.
Excellent and creative food with fresh ingredients. We had a Tom Yum soup special that was outstanding, though it was a stunning $13 a bowl. Atmosphere and cocktails are top notch. The bar does get a crowded because there's not a lot of space between the bar seats and the high-top tables.
I chose The Merchant because it was within walking distance to the Opera House. The Brunch menu satisfied the vegetarian, the foodie, and my taste. It opened at 10:30 am giving us ample time to have a leisurely meal before the show. They validated parking at a nearby garage.
It was a brilliant choice on my part.
I will definitely be back.
Overall The Merchant was okay. The restaraunt had a nice feel and was pretty quiet for a Friday night. There was a good sized drink menu, I ordered the Sangria but they got me an iced tea instead. When I mentioned the mistake, the waiter quickly corrected it and got me a free drink which was nice. I ordered two of the small plates, the ribs and the gnocchi. The ribs were dry but the gnocchi was delicious.
I had friends visit from Florida and one of my co-workers recommended The Merchant.
I am so happy that she did - the food was FANTASTIC!!! The service was Fantastic as well. I HIGHLY recommend this restaurant for any occasion. I give The Merchant a FIVE+ rating!!! Very satisfied customer!!
Absolutely atrocious. I've been here before and liked it in the past but this time it was terrible. We got wings as an appetizer and the 2 of the wings were not cooked thoroughly. For dinner, I got the chicken with roasted potatoes. The potatoes came out completely burnt and the chicken was horribly dry. This was not worth the $24 I paid to eat it, frankly, it wouldn't be worth $5. Don't go here.
The chef did such a great job plating the food--truly a masterpiece. I personally had pan seared scallops and they were probably one of the best I have ever had. My other three friends had steak frites and they all looked like they were cooked to perfection. I also appreciate that the Merchant validates parking after 3:30. The difference in parking was $6 vs $42. Thank you for that as well.
Despite what I hope was merely a rookie misstep with the steak frites order, we would definitely return. The steak was served raw, then sent back; instead of grilling further or trying again with a fresh steak, it was microwaved, turning it into shoe leather. Having said that, the artichoke app was excellent, as was the cod entree. We would definitely return, avoiding the steak frites main.
