Great food good ambience and friendly service.
There are some great options for vegetarians as well.
Great place and food. We go there a lot. However, they need to be more respectful when people have reservations and ensure they don’t wait when they come on time. A bit noisy so needs some acoustic treatment
Server was not doing a good job tending to our table. Started with a request for cream for my coffee. I had to ask twice and she said I'm gonna get to it but didn't come after 10 minutes of waiting. She finally brings it over after I kept looking at her.
After our meals were served she did not come back to our table till I asked for the bill. I didn't get a coffee refill and lost interest in getting dessert.
My first time at The Merchant. Everything was great! Had an "I love Ginny" cocktail - delightful! Will definitely be back.
Perfect for a quiet dinner before catching a train at South Station. Attentive staff, delicious drinks at a nice price for downtown Boston, and good food! Will definitely return.
Not a fan. Our orders got mixed up and then when it was right our burgers were very salty. The staff was apologetic and the manager brought us Chicken wings which no one wanted but it was a nice gesture.
My dinner was absolutely fabulous. I would make another trip just to have the Sea Trout with kimchi fried rice. Ambiance was lively and fun. Service was very good. Pleasant and attentive. My water glass was never empty.
Buffalo Cauliflower is AH-MAZING. Loved the tacos as well.
Arrived at The Merchant after seeing a show in Boston. Made reservarion prior and we were seated immediately. We enjoted our meal. I had the kimchi rice with trout which was spicy and very delicious. My friend had burger with fries. The fries were very salty which our sever quickly exchanged.
Service was good and I liked the warm decor of the restaurant.
a new favorite. great beer list. flavors on food really good and price not crazy.
Great drinks! But the food was just okay. .
We were there post-theater (Sunday matinee). 3 adults, 2 kids (8 & 6). All was very good - thanks!
Great experience for a Family Easter Brunch
Great place. Great breakfast.
Waitress did not seem to be having a good night/in a good mood. Surprising since it hadnt gotten that busy yet. Other than that the food was delicious and about worth the price
The Merchant NEVER disappoints. Consistent delicious food, awesome decor and atmosphere, outstanding and friendly staff and always busy but the noise level never hits too loud. Drinks and food are always delivered quickly. I'm a regular patron and bring my team there for lunch and drinks on a regular basis as they all love it for all the reasons I do.
Went for lunch during school vacation week. Business lunch. Service was slow and indifferent. Waitress spilled water on my work papers without any acknowledgement. Swordfish special was terrible. Could barely cut through the obviously frozen fish. Portion was small and we had to ask for bread. Not good.
Steak Frites was delicious. My friend's Half Chicken tasted great, just alot of work. Waiter was friendly but very busy. Staff seemed a bit overwhelmed. Still, great atmosphere, delicious food and friendly staff. And very reasonably priced. I'll definitely go back.
They made a 20 year reunion extra special in so many ways! Can’t wait to come back :)
Overall good experience. Food and drinks were quick and well executed.
Was a great place for a work dinner.
We always have good food and drinks. Great for lunch, especially on a Friday. We sat early and the restaurant was packed by the time we left
Tasty food and interesting menu- The Merchant never disappoints!!
Party of six for a Sunday Birthday Brunch.
Excellent service, not quite as busy as in our past visits. Great selection of cocktails, craft beer and wine...everyone had something different.
Food quality was a little inconsistent. The "House-made Bacon" was mostly too thick and dried out...parts were hard like a wood chip. My medium burger (with the bacon) was served very well done. Everyone else (three breakfast dishes and two other burgers) had a great meal, I ate my burger (without the bacon pieces) anyway.
The Merchant is a very comfortable restaurant, we weren't rushed and enjoyed our gathering. Even with my meal that didn't meet my expectations, will be back again.
To be fair my wife enjoyed her vegetarian dish which was a squash and chickpea bowl and we both enjoyed our wine choices. However, my chicken, kale and fingerling potatoes was not worth the price by a long shot. The potatoes were fine if not inspiring but the chicken was dry and the kale was inedible/undercooked.
We have cooked kale and it takes quite a bit of time to get it soft enough to eat and that's why we prefer swiss chard, spinach etc.
We dined at The Merchant prior to going to the theater. The food and service were good.
Always consistently good, with great variety
I wasn't sure what to expect of The Merchant. I was pleasantly surprised. The food was imaginative and delicious. The only negatives I'd note from my experience are the light--there were lamps by the bar, but we were at a booth and the lighting was so subdued, it was hard to read the menu. Also, a martini in a highball glass with ice? Nah. Tasty as it was, give me my martini in a martini glass, please. But these are petty things. I will eat there again and have already recommended it to friends.
Excellent service, food, ambiance... diverse menu with something to please most everyone.
A+ - again - will be back again
Service wasn’t bad, could have been a little bit more attentive. Cheese plate was a real disappointment: server never told us what the cheeses were and they tasted a bit stale and there wasn’t much of it either.
Buffalo cauliflower was fantastic.
Roasted chicken was solid but not brilliant and my friend got the cod and it was in a bowl of greasy juice. The card itself though was perfectly cooked and well seasoned.
Bill was a bit pricey for what we got. The Merchant won’t be my first choice for dinner in Boston anytime soon, but it was not terrible either.
Great spot for a business lunch
I recommend the “small plates” which were not that small. The mushroom pappardelle was delicious and so was the tuna tartare. I had starter and two small plates which was too much food. USD50 before tips and alcohol.
Our waiter was lovely, friendly and attentive. The food and drinks were delicious (slightly pricey fore the portions but not uncommon for the area) There were just a few things that we felt let the restaurant down. Firstly - it appeared the restaurant was very overstaffed, meaning one or two different people came over to our table just to collect one glass here and there AS SOON AS we had put them down empty, this was a little bit annoying. More importantly, Twice we had to ask the otherwise unoccupied staff at the front of the restaurant to shut the door because it was 31*f outside and they had deliberately propped it open. On the second time that we asked for them to close it (on what was probably one of the windiest days of the year so far) the manager gave me look of contempt and told me she was 'just testing it' I found her attitude to be extremely rude and it sullied the experience for me. If it wasn't for our friendly waiter we would have given this way less stars.
Good food; very fast service; we were impressed; The tuna salad special (below) was quite tasty
Very good food - chicken wings were excellent. Service was wonderful. We were there for brunch and ill definitely return.
What a frustrating experience. Service was awkward, inattentive and slow. It started with our waiter not greeting us. He just started filling water and making a mess. Then went to take our drink order just as we sat down. We asked for a little extra time and he then he was gone for a bit. A decent glass of Red wine arrived warm. Like it was sitting near an oven. Restaurant was stifling hot.
Food arrived in a timely manner but kids meals didn’t come with the side of marinara required. Our waiter noticed which was great but then after 5 mins we flagged him down to see where it was. He explained “I put it into the computer 2x, we have enough runners they should bring it up.” I’m sorry what?! When the marinara finally arrived we also wanted to order more wine but our waiter just walked away. Thankfully a runner took our order politely.
The steak frites were pretty good but the steak was under seasoned. Burger was good but over cooked.
When it came time to pay it took a good 15 mins to flag him down to get the check. We noticed a table near us also were waiting to pay. We barely got acknowledged or just a thank you for dining with us. The whole night was just so disappointing and awkward. There are too many places to eat to spend $120 for bad service and mediocre food.
A great place to spend your anniversary! Great food, wine, and atmosphere. Service was excellent.
The temperature throughout the restaurant was very hot and honestly overwhelmed everything else about the evening. If it weren’t for the fact we knew we could not go anywhere else based on our schedule we just tried to make the best of it. The server was great...she kept drinks and waters filled. Sadly, beyond her outstanding service, the balance of our “experience” was very rather basic.
Service was great, food and drink were very tasty, the interior design was comforting. However, there were major issues with the ventilation and temperature control of room. It was extremely hot nearly the entire time and was very uncomfortable. This could very well been a one time instance and my party and I did not mention anything to the staff, so it very well could have been mitigated.
Hi Danielle, Thank you for your feedback. We were experiencing some issues with the heating system in the building that we are working to resolve so this issue does not occur again in the future. We look forward to having you dine with us again! -Tena Reynolds General Manager
