Wait service was poor. Long time to get water and even speak with waiter. This continued all night. Food delivery was not smooth all night. Poured sparkling water into my half glass of regular water. Food was okay but not spectacular. Highlight was hamachi but this dish felt out of place on this menu. Brussels were soggy. Flat iron steak was cooked well but chimichurri was flavorless. Octopus and calamari starter had some good flavors but was very dry. I make better snitzel at home. Sorry Maverick.
Authentic Texas cuisine. Varied menu with meat and seafood plates. Great sharing accompaniments.
Beautiful atmosphere. The restaurant was bigger than I expected. It is beautifully decorated. Service was great. The food was delicious. I love the a la carte menu as it is easily customizable and is great for sharing/shared plates. We had the rotisserie chicken, mac and cheese, and clams. Everything was delicious!! We will definitely be back to try more.
We come to San Antonio a couple of times a year and found this back in February when they first opened. Maverick was one of our first places to hit when we came back. It has only gotten better! The creativity of dishes and unique combinations are fantastic! Highly recommended.
Overall we enjoyed our dinner with friends at the maverick, but having dinned there on several occasions we were disappointed in the GNOCCHI it was dry with no sauce with just sour cream dropped on top. In the past it was superb.
Great food, beautiful atmosphere/ good music, and the service was great!! I'm so glad things like this are downtown now 😊highly recommend.
Great food and service. The manager and serving staff were very gracious. I really like that you can choose your portion size. The potato pave is amazing!
Excellent food with unique offerings and flavors. Service was excellent although there was a wait for desert to be delivered and for check to be processed (minor issue!). All in all, one of the best meals we've had in 7 years in San Antonio weekly dining.
Again, another great visit to The Maverick...still one of our two favorite restaurants in Southtown. Shannon was our server, who had only been there for three weeks, but you never would have known she was new. She was personable, efficient, and knowledgeable. Our favorite server, Sarah, came over to the table to welcome us back. Just love the level of service we receive each time we come! Thanks for a great evening. 😊
Staff was super knowledgable and professional. Great atmosphere and food had amazing flavor. Unique menu, something a little different to San Antonio and prices were not bad at all.
Everyone that ordered a meat dish said it was tough. My duck was extremely tough and slightly undercooked. Over all underwhelming. Won’t go back unfortunately
The lunch menu seemed limited and we ended up ordering the chicken salad and the tuna salad hoping to be wow'd but a new flavor or presentation. When I go out for a special lunch, I want my dishes to highlight the skill of the kitchen crew and the options that usually only a professional kitchen are capable of, unfortunately we didn't choose well. I'll order something more intricate and interesting on my next visit.
We celebrated our anniversary and it was sweet of them to give us a card congratulating us on the special occasion. The food was super tasty. We had the mixed grill platter and the pork tenderloin melts in your mouth. The cheese puffs were super addicting. The chocolate mousse cake was super moist and delicious. Service was really good. Would definitely come back and recommend to others.
Getaway trip to San Antonio. Bartender from The Esquire said that would enjoy the Maverick for amazing food. Just a few blocks off the River Walk. We were Very happy that we tried this Bisto
First, I love the decor and details- outstanding. I've eaten here three times, and each meal was very good. Last meal- we ordered several different items and shared them. The fried pickles were so good- served with a home-made "ranch" styled dressing. The mini crab sliders were cute and delicious. Also- it's worth a trip to the restrooms- each different and way cool.
Husband and I went to this restaurant on a Sunday early evening. There were 2 large tables, although, the noise level was very low. Bar area was very nice with great cocktails. Service was good. I was confused by the food. Seemed like the menu was French/Asian. Many menu items had soy or hoisin in them, including my grilled salmon which overpowered the core ingredient. Cheese puffs and pork chop fantastic. Undecided if I’ll return for anything other than an app and cocktails.
Great! Loved our table and the food was amaxing
Excellent food. Excellent service. Highly recommend this restaurant.
Love it!!! Started with the 3 cheese board. Got the kale salad with grilled pork. Hubby got herbed chicken. The sides are alcarte, got Mac and cheese and bread basket! Strawberry shortcake for dessert. Everything was great!!!
Went here for my boyfriend's birthday. The ambiance and décor are incredible. This is definitely a see and be seen place. We were both disappointed in the food. My pork chop was so dry, it was very difficult to cut and eat. The quail on my boyfriend's entrée was also very dry. Understanding that this may have been an off night, we will give it another try.
We have a wonderful time at Maverick for my wife’s birthday! Doug made excellent suggestions on apps, wine and places to find nice bottles in SA.
Just ok...hostesses were very friendly, our waiter seemed bored, drinks were a little pricey, but tasted good, food was hit and miss...pork belly was outstanding, quail was tender, tenderloin lukewarm and not seasoned, sausage not very good, schnitzel was great, mac and cheese not good, Brussels were ok, mushrooms were outstanding, arugula salad just tasted of onion, cheese puffs were good.
The menu was a la carte. Very pricey. When asking waiter regrading the arrival of our meal he was dismissive and rude. The steak I ordered was raw, I asked for medium.
Wonderful layout. Service was outstanding and our server Sandra was knowledgeable about the menu items. Appetizers and entrees were original and flavorful. Very nice overall.
Loved everything about our visit!
Another outstanding, contemporary dining experience at the Maverick. The menu is excellent and the wait staff is knowledgeable and desirous of providing the best service possible. My favorite restaurant in San Antonio.
Very nice ambiance. Good service and a nice wine list. Been a couple of times. While they are extremely meat centric (with seafood) they also offer lots a veggies. As a vegetarian despite the selection, I’ve been a little underwhelmed. They have 3 vegetarian pastas that can serve as an entree. The two out of three I’ve had were not particularly inspiring. Still it is a nice place and the meat eaters seem to be happy.
I ordered mussels as my appetizer and the NY strip for my main & my husband had the arugula salad and the wood grilled half chicken. I had red wine (Rioja) my husband an IPA. Both were good. When the appetizers arrived the mussels smelled great. I asked for some bread because there was nothing to soak up what I thought would be the nice liquid in which the mussels were cooked. Didn’t need the bread (for which I was charged $7 dollars) as it was very bland and had no depth. My husband’s salad was good. Main courses arrived, my steak had nice charring but had a huge piece of fat on one side and gristle running through the middle. I probably got about a square inch or two of meat off the steak. Side were Mac & cheese (soggy) and mushrooms, also bland. My husband’s chicken was ok. We called it quits after that and decided to have a drink and dessert elsewhere.
The Good: Outstanding curb appeal. Very nice looking restaurant with a great looking bar and nice friendly people greeting you at the door and serving you food. The look raises your expectation for great food and drinks. Cheese plate was good.
The Bad: More potatoes than calamari and grilled octopus in the Calamari and Grilled Octopus appetizer. Soggy French fries. Flavorless gnocchi with a useless gallop of crème fraîche pornographically drizzled on top. Underseasoned but well cooked (though tough (no Allen Brothers here)) Angus New York Strip.
The Ugly: The bar looked so professional that my wife and I decided to order off the menu. Please don’t ask a customer how to mix a drink. Just Google it. Disappointed that the bar could not make a Cable Car. Hendricks Gin cucumber gimlet was just gin and lime. No sugar/simple syrup. Glass not cold.
Restaurant is well liked by many. I will try again in a few months to see.
Food was great. Cocktail service was very slow.
The location was charming. The food was tasty, but served lukewarm. The service was slow and it took a long time to get our food. We’d try it again though. It might be a fun happy hour after work, pre-date kind of place.
This was our 2nd visit to Maverick and we went for their Father's Day brunch. The restaurant is beautiful and quite spacious. The food was very good - we had the Maverick Burger, the pork belly & coddled eggs, the Steak Frite, and the Blue Crab omelet and everything was very tasty.
The restaurant was crowded, so not much room to navigate around the restaurant. Service was a bit slow - took about 10 mins after we were seated to get water and about another 10 mins before our bloody mary's arrived. They were extremely busy and did appear to have all hands on deck, but the wait was a bit long.
overall a good experience and highly recommend for the food and the bar (all our drinks were delicious)
Amazing service & food for Father’s Day brunch today. We started with the brown butter brioche doughnut - freshly made & melt in your mouth goodness - and prickly pear mimosas. For breakfast, my wife had the braised pork belly served with cheesy grits & coddled eggs along with a spiked cold coffee. I had the duck confit hash topped with poached eggs. Everything was very wonderful, and we can’t wait to return!!
We have now visited several times and find the food and service exceptional. We will be back soon and look forward to brining friends.
This was my first time at Maverick and I can't wait to go back. I went in a group of 5 to get together with good friends. I would definitely recommend making a reservation, especially for a larger group. The cocktail menu, at first, seemed a little limited but throughout the night I think we tried at least one of almost all of them and they were all great. I really enjoyed the St. Bernard and the Fade to Cab. We tried a variety of appetizers and really liked them all (the salmon tartare, the grilled octopus and calamari, and the four cheese plate). Most in the party ordered the mixed grill, which looked incredible, and I opted for a GIANT pork schnitzel. We all also had the green chile mac & cheese with pork rinds, because how could you not? We all had a wonderful time and enjoyed everything immensely. We sat the chef's table (and I won't lie, I think my butt is a little bruised from the stools we sat on) BUT we had a wonderful server named Sarah and enjoyed seeing all of the dishes come out. Thanks Maverick!! We had a great time.
The food was excellent and well presented. The service was good, a little too intrusive with the clearing of empty plates, glasses, drinks, etc. I feel like I was "nickled & dimed" in that the only thing you got without paying for was salt & pepper (and you had to ask for it!). Please give your customers at least some bread & butter when they are seated.
We loved it! We are so happy to have this gem in SA. We have a three year old and only get out for dates 2-3 times per month. We will be coming back because of the food, service, and decor. We felt like we were in SA, but also LA or Brooklyn. The low hum of other patrons was perfect. The conversations we had with the staff were enlightened. Great wine and drinks. It was perfect from start to finish.
We had a reservation on Friday night and were sat right on time after a drink at the bar. Food was great and the ambiance was perfect for a date or a group event. Great wine suggestions as well. We tried a lot of different menu items and it was all great.
The idea of this restaurant is way better than the execution. Service is a little on the slow side; entrees were good but not great. Desserts were excellent. I wouldn't make an effort to return.
