First of all on arrival we were told they were unaware of our booking and that they had stopped working with OpenTable even though you sent us a reminder 2 days beforehand. This is a fault of both the Hotel and OpenTable and that's why I have closed my account with you as you should have made sure the Hotel was kept in touch for those bookings which had been made through you. The welcome was non-existant as I got the impression they were put out by our arrival and we were told to wait in the bar which incurred more cost. It would appear that in this hotel it is acceptable for customers to take their shoes off for everybody to see and smell, so that they can eat their lunch!! I never saw that in a hotel before and they should have been told that it was not allowed. The afternoon tea was very poor and the service appalling. We were under the impression they had to prepare something at the last minute. The scones were probably the worst I have ever eaten and there was enough jam and cream for 1 person (we were 3) they never offered us fresh tea or anything and they decided to present the bill without being asked. The bill was £85 and to compare we recently had afternoon tea at the Broadway hotel which was top class and cost £14.5 per person. There were only two other customers and when they left we were alone so there was no atmosphere in the restaurant although as we were with an old friend it did not bother us. If the afternoon tea is any standard to go by then I would certainly not recommend this hotel or OpenTable to anybody. It is a great shame as I spent the night there 30 years ago when it was under the previous management and it was a first class Hotel in every respect. I have contacted the hotel directly and they did offer us a complimentary tea in the future but to be honest I doubt whether I would be able to persuade my wife to return for a second attempt.

The occasion was my wife's birthday and I had booked a table for 6 for afternoon tea. Unfortunately, on the morning it transpired that 2 of the guests were unable to come due to illness, but the hotel dealt with the change easily and with no fuss. The hotel has a very imposing appearance with a tree-lined drive (pleasantly illuminated after dark). The interior had a suitably manorial bearing and we were shown into one of the dining rooms to a table laid for 4 by a window, from which we could view some of the well-kept grounds. It was Valentine's Day, and we noticed the adjoining room and its tables were decorated for romantic evening meals. We were not surprised that there were few other diners present as it was a weekday afternoon, and we enjoyed the cosy intimate atmosphere. The food was daintily presented, good in quality and quantity, and there was a choice of teas. Two of our company opted for a flute of champagne at a small extra cost. As we had mentioned it was a birthday, the waitress brought a little 'Happy Birthday' plaque with a few edible goodies on it. The staff were pleasant and friendly, and I would have no hesitation in recommending this venue, and would look forward to going there again.

Lovely house, with suitable festive feeling with all the garlands and huge Christmas tree in the reception area.

It is a lovely venue and the food and service/staff were generally excellent, although our table wasn't pre prepared, and we seemed to be the only lunch guests (we had afternoon tea for lunch, having pre booked). The lack of background music, open fire and other guests resulted in a lack of the atmosphere we expected from a previous visit, and the staff were obviously very busy preparing for the evening Christmas parties.

We decided on this place as a half way point in meeting friends for lunch and a catch up. The hotel was very nice looking from the outside and the inside. nice bar/lounge area but a little drafty by the windows. Restaurant was good, with good service but we were the only people eating at the time. I would revisit but my only complaint was there was no atmosphere to the place.

Terrible food, massive let down after having had a look at the fancy website. Mushroom soup was a thick purée that had an after taste of rubber, rabbit terrine was meaty but someone forgot to add any seasoning whatsoever. Main courses were a slight improvement but not by much. Even though this was a 3 course menu we didn't feel brave enough to give the puddings a try... can't remember last time I refused a free dessert !... my date tried to lighten the mood by joking that the chef had gone on early Christmas break and the waiter was also doing the cooking ... that is how bad it was...

A great old house with lots of character. Excellent dining rooms, one of which has fine wood panelling and a balcony. Food was of high quality exhibiting innovation and good balance of ingredients well cooked. Wine list was fairly short but with good variety and fairly priced. The restaurant is part of a hotel that has excellent facilities and a beautiful garden.

Lunch on a Thursday, we were two only in the dining room. If you are the sort of couple who have nothing to say you would find this uncomfortable perhaps. Lunching with a friend, I enjoyed the quietness pleasant. Staff friendly and happy, the latter particularly welcome. Super, refined lunch. Back for lunch soon.

I chose this hotel for afternoon tea with the girls because the gardens and dining rooms looked beautiful on the website. I got there early armed with my walking boots and camera hoping to work up an appetite while walking around and photographing the gardens but to be honest, they weren't particularly inspiring. The interior of the hotel is beautiful, traditional and welcoming. There were 4 of us so 2 stands of afternoon tea, the one I shared had cream so hard it was unspreadable and lemon curd (I think it was lemon curd) that was too hard to even force my fork into to taste. We asked for these to be replaced with softer cream and curd which took so long to arrive that the other 2 in our party had finished their scones. The cakes and sandwiches were very tasty and the staff were happy to give us cupcake boxes for the cakes we couldn't finish. The Room we dined in needed a bit of background music, some candles or pretty lighting in the fireplace - something to give it a bit of atmosphere! It's such a shame that this beautiful venue was such a disappointment to our party. We had a lovely time, but that was because of the company rather than the food or the service. It's a good thing there's a service charge on the bill because otherwise the waiting staff wouldn't have got a tip.
