Bit pricey for Sunday roast for 2 thin slices of beef, but good flavour would have liked bit more for £19.95. Unusual flavour in the red cabbage, my son thought it was thai flavour, not sure if I liked it, guess it was some sort of chinese 5 spice? Green beans and cabbage were very nice and crunchy. Came out super quick. Lovely yorkie and gravy.
Food was excellent again. The ambience is lovely with lots of space and different corners for different moods.
The new staff are taking time to get up to speed - as they are in many pubs and restaurants. They were kind, open, pleasant but just a little bit inexperienced. They will pick this up quickly, so we’ll revisit and check their progress!
Amazing food as always and Gary is always so friendly. Really love the pods as it’s quiet and good atmosphere
This is within walking distance for us but there is ample parking if needed. Good choice of food including fresh fish, an unusual mezze platter for one or too share. Good choice of beer and wine, friendly service and a rather quirky ambience. Lots of outdoor space with good covering for tables in case of rain. We will certainly visit again
Always delicious food, lovely serving staff & friendly atmosphere. Love it
We felt that the pub aesthetically was generally ok, perhaps a bit tired. I ordered the mussels which smelled and tasted off so I sent them back. The owner came out and asked me if I had had covid because that can affect the taste of food. I said that I hadn't had covid, the mussels just smelled weird and I didn't want to get sick but he wouldn't have it. He insisted that they were fresh and would not believe me, and preceded to charge me for them, which I refused to do as I had only eaten one. My partner ordered roast pork, which he said was very disappointing as the restaurant was out of Apple sauce and he had to ask for his crackling. If he had known that wasn't going to get any Apple sauce he wouldn't have ordered roast pork. The owner, we felt, was a bit too over friendly and wouldn't leave us alone when we were just trying to enjoy our lunch. It felt like he was constantly hovering and listening to our conversations, which was strange. It was a shame because the other staff all seemed lovely and there were some nice animals like birds, chickens and goats, which my daughter enjoyed. But we won't be returning. It was very mediocre.
What awful things to say. I'm extremely offended that you thought I was eavesdropping on your table. I can assure you that I was not. You were sat in front of a 3m x 2m showing tennis , that is why people were "hovering" in that area. We did have fresh apple sauce made that morning. Your mussels were not off, however I instructed the waiter to take them off your bill and offered to get you something else. (you declined). We obviously aren't your cup of tea. No need to make it personal.
Enjoy a warm welcome in this gastropub that serves excellent food in a relaxed environment
Their courtyard is a delightful spot for al fresco dining.
The food wasn't quite as good as last time and the real ale was average.
We had a very enjoyable Fathers Day meal at the Maltsters Arms - the atmosphere was friendly and the staff very helpful. The food was good value we thought - we'll look forward to going again when the weather is better!
Very interesting menu with choices for vegetarians.
Chilly day so happy to have a pod with a heater.
Very welcoming ambiance..
Good for families - children have a menu and goats/ hens to see in the garden.
Atmospheric, welcoming,, good food and attentive service. Would come again
Good pub with quality food. Had fish of the day which was excellent gurnard in white sauce. Some good veggy options. Sat in a pod for lunch which was fine. The inside also looked very good. Handy for Greys Court National Trust. Would go again.
Excellent meal. Staff were so welcoming. Great Sunday lunch.
Delicious starter, Sunday roast and Desert. Staff were attentive and sociable. A lovely dining experience.
I can’t fault the staff and landlord - I made them aware of my father in laws dementia and they were fantastic and kind.
There’s a quirky atmosphere in the pub which was brilliant for my children who are into lego and Star Wars as there’s lots of memorabilia to look at and talk about
Food lovely but the soup was tepid so could have been a bit warmer next time please 🙂
Burgers, scampi, tuna nicoisse all lovely
We will return definitely
We sat inside which was perfect for us but the outside area looked lovely as well
Thankyou for a lovely lunch
We loved being on the terrace - lots of to-ing and fro-ing - so you may be distracted by visitors and staff. Pods out the front look across the road to fields. The garden is out the back so further from amenities.
Absolutely wonderful meal, the food was amazing!
We were made to feel very comfortable and welcome, lovely service and the terrace is looking beautiful.
Overpriced and pretentious dining, limited menu choice and staff didn’t seem to have a clue what they were doing.
It seems the management want to reflect a “Gastro pub” but don’t quite pull it off. Very disappointed experience it certainly isn’t as good as it used to be.
bizarre review. We can’t find any booking in your name. You certainly didn’t bring anything to anyone’s attention. “You seem to have a very odd perception of “pretentious dining”. Limited menu? I’m guessing you aren’t used to freshly prepared food. we do very simply prepared fresh French style Bistro Food. From burgers to steaks Our staff are amazing and have been through a year from hell. Thanks for your badly written “review”. Menus are online with prices, why come if you find it expensive?
Fast becoming regulars in this welcoming, first class Restaurant with a cosy pub feel! The food would challenge the finest of French Restaurants! Can't emphasise enough how delicious the food is. We were also made to feel at ease with the amazing, kind staff, where nothing is too much for them!
A fabulous late lunch/early dinner on a very rainy Sunday afternoon. The food was great, very attentive and friendly staff and management. It was our first visit, but we will be back very soon.
Food was average but they seriously need a FOH manager as services was chaotic from start to finish. Tables tightly packed in, ages to order, wrong food arrived, cold, items missing from the plate, wrong bill, card machine wouldn’t work.
Rain, wind, staff not returning to our industry from furlough, outdoor dining only allowed, lovely to have such a patient understanding guest. Call in for your refund. Lovely to receive such positive “anonymous “feedback from you at such a difficult time.
Nice place, great food. Would return if didn't live 300 miles away.
Ordered Escargot and Cuisses de grenouille as starters. The snails were cooked spot on, not rubbery at all. The butter could of had a little more garlic in it however. The frogs legs were cooked perfectly, tender, often when they are over cooked they curl off the bone but these were not. The aoli tasted good.
For mains had a minted lamb burger which was fantastic, cooked perfectly, bun looked and tasted home made. A guest had the Wookie burger, was good, beef slightly over done but that’s being picky.
Service was good, dined outside due to restrictions but still lovely atmosphere. Our waiter was knowledgeable about the menu, attentive, and had a great demeanour.
Good wine selection too.
Worth the journey and will definitely return.
Limited but interesting menu. Lovely pod to sit in to eat so felt very private. Excellent service.
This was my first experience of the new people having used The Maltsters on very many occasions in the past. I was therefore unsure of what to expect. The booking of the table and the follow up reminder were sensible and easy to use. The drinks order was taken very soon after arrival and delivered quickly. The food order was also taken soon after this in an effective and efficient way. The food which arrived also soon afterwards was well presented, hot and plentiful. All this happened on a fine but windy day when only the outside was able to be used. We were not hassled and were able to follow up further orders as and when we wanted. A very good first experience under trying conditions. Well done.
When the establishment contacts you demanding that you take down a factual review because its " libellous" tells you everything you need to know. I'll spare you all the details as its descended into "he said she said" land.
You claimed in your review thAt you saw “a rat in a dog bowl by the kitchen door”..... then in a private message stated that it may have been “a field mouse” or a “catnip toy”. You also claimed in the private message to currently “be going out of your (sic) way to support businesses that you wouldn’t normally visit”.... you claim to not have brought this to any of our attention, but continue to finish your meal, then state that you “saw a rat” on a public review site. Hmmmmm
Lovely place to go for dinner! Great food and great staff! Landlord was very accommodating, generally nice people all round! Can’t wait to come again!
WE WILL BE COMING AGAIN.
AND TELL ALL OUR FRIENDS WHAT GREAT FOOD, EASY TO PARK, COVID FRIENDLY,
BLANKETS FOR KNEE WAS A LOVELY TOUCH AND VERY WELCOME.
I didn't attend but my colleagues had a lovely lunch catch up. Good food (not great, but good) and good service. Thank you.
excellent choice of food options , very well cooked and presented.
Gary and the team were very welcoming and extremely accommodating given the fact we arrived an hour prior to our booking!! Nothing was too much trouble and the young man who was designated to look after us did a fine job!!
A varied lunchtime menu was offered albeit one or two items were unavailable, Specials were also available.
Once our party of 4 had chosen we sat back and enjoyed the outdoor facility which fortunately was an open marquee that kept us the right side of 40mph winds!!
Our party enjoyed the food which was delivered in decent time. Maybe hotter plates would have kept the food warmer for longer but this has always been a little "bugbear" with us at other restaurants......
Overall a great experience and thank you to Gary and staff.
So pleased pubs are able
To open again so we were very happy sitting outside on a rather cold blowy day but the terrace is sheltered and there are plenty of blankets to go round. Food was not as warm as it could have been but that was probably because we were outside. Lovely Camden IPA went down a treat!
Overall satisfactory, clearly after a return from lockdown previous service will not resume immediately but an admirable effort none the less
We have eaten there before and were really disappointed this time, food really wasn't up to its normal standard and we left one of the mains
Service was awful, the poor lad who knew what he was doing had worked 42 hours that weekend alone so we werent complaining to him, but it was just him and one other who really didn't know what he was doing
I realise staff turnover has been an issue since lockdown but this lad had obviously had very little training and thrown in at the deep end with no support other than the one waiter who was basically doing it all
Unfortunately the meal quality doesn't encourage us to return any time soon, we would let the service go as we realise those challenges at the present time
I’m sorry his rather nastily worded review just isn’t true. As you can see, from the other reviews from THE BANK HOLIDAY Monday. We had four front of house staff on, a girl & 3 boys, 1 boy was on a trial shift. The only complaint was from someone who complained there was too much garlic in their Moulles Frites and no cream. (Wrong dish). There was however, 40mph wind though & a hailstorm. Nobody except me worked anywhere near 42hrs. Please tell the truth in future your review is libellous.
We have been quite a few times and always enjoyed, the reason I did not give 5 stars is we walked to the pub and happened to be running a few minutes late, when I rang them to inform we would be approximately 20 minutes late the response was 'This would cause no end of problems', which is not the best of responses for customer service! When arrived all ran smoothly and all serving very polite and the food was good, I just suggest they work on whoever answers the 'phone.
We had one of the pods at the front which was super. Sunday lunch was great, just missing veggies as standard, rather than as an extra. Puddings were delicious! Service and staff were great, friendly, polite, efficient but also gave us space. Highly recommended. 😁😁
Food was great (French & North African influences) and we had a lovely chat with the chef/owner about the home grown produce. Service was sincere but slightly patchy.
Great food and service , will definitely repeat . Lovely time had despite the weather. They had made a great effort and gave great service despite the Covid restrictions
Under whelming service weak
Lavatory poorly maintained
We provide table service as a government requirement. We are a pub not a fine dining experience. Sorry if you’ve been misled by the other reviews.
The food was only fair - the chips were cold which was disappointing
Sorry to hear that. We had 142 covers that day, 4 new staff to replace the losers that didn’t return after we furloughed them and a 20 min hailstorm. Sorry your chips were cold. A quick word could’ve fixed that. Our food is far better than fair. I’ve updated your notes to give you a complimentary drink next time you are in.
