The Lucky Well Ratings and Reviews
From the extensive bourbon list and cocktail menu, to the craft beers (local ones too!), this places really shines. A fantastic brisket, everything smoked to perfection with dry rub technique. Took my brother and his wife here for their birthday and our server was outstanding - joking along with us and making us feel welcome. I will return for sure the next time I'm in town!
We are always pleased with our experience at the Lucky Well. Chef Chad is passionate and innovative, one of the hardest working in the business and the man knows BBQ! The meats are consistently perfect an delicious and you should definitely save room for the charred banana Nilla pudding!
Really great food, fun scene! The vibe and scene here doesn't feel suburban at all - this very much feels like a fun, city hot spot. Our only complaint was that the server did not tell us the specials. (we realized this as we were leaving, and heard the specials being shared with the people next to us). that's why I marked service as fair. But overall, delish!
We were looking forward to a great BBQ meal after perusing the menu. Unfortunately, the food and the service were both lacking. Sadly the best part of the outing was the rustic, yet sleek, décor. The ribs were dry and the brussel sprouts too al dente. The spinach salad was over wilted and included too much endive, which overpowered the other flavors. The one notable was the shrimp and grit cakes, which were tasty but again would have been over the top delicious if more that a 1/4 piece of bacon was included.
Too many other choices in Ambler to go back anytime soon.
The deviled eggs with crispy chicken skin were divine. As were the grit cakes with shrimp. I love bacon but there was a little too much in the Brussels Sprouts. Ribs to die for but easily the half rack would have suffice. They were out of their barrel cocktail which I would have loved to taste. Maybe next time, along with the trout and the mac and cheese!
We love the Lucky Well! Every item on the menu is delicious - we have never been disappointed. Our favorite is to combine the pork shoulder with the mac and cheese. The mixed drink specials are also very well done. The overall feel of the restaurant is great and we always receive a great welcome from the hostess. Be patient with the service - sometimes it takes awhile to get your drinks or check. But it is minor since the food and atmosphere are so good.
Atmosphere -great! Our server, Catherine, was excellent, especially with the 5 year-old in our party. Great drink menu! Salads- beet, spinach, and wedge- were excellent. Burger and veggie sandwich were fine, but the bbq chicken platter was dried out and not tasty. Desserts were tasty- nothing out of the ordinary in variety. Location and atmosphere can't be beat We'll give it another try.
The ribs were really good. The brisket was not that good, too chewy and not tasty. The Brussel sprouts were also very good. The waitress didn't return to ask if we wanted more drinks during our meal. The waitress seemed agitated when we asked about the menu, as if we were bothering her.
The food at The Lucky Well is some of the better bbq I've had in the north east, especially in the Philadelphia area. The brisket was very tender and flavorful. As was the bbq sauce. I found the pork ribs to be a bit dry and the blackening pretty intense my wife had the burger and really enjoyed it. The Poutine with brisket was awesome and in a very large portion, easily shared with three or four as an appetizer or side. I never had Poutine without cheesecurds, like they are in Canada, but these were really good. The service, on the other hand, while friendly was pretty slow. It wasn't that busy when we were there but I sat without a drink (water included) for maybe a half hour. I had two empty glasses in front of me but no one seemed to notice or care. Our waitress was gone from before our food arrived until we were just about finished. The other servers seemed to avert their eyes to other server's tables. All in all a nice place to visit and I'm sure we will return.
I really enjoy chef Chad's barbeque . Our visit was during restaurant week in Ambler. My husband and I shared the special appetizer chicken wings which were very tasty. Then I had the Memphis Feast, the restaurant week offering, and my husband had the half chicken. Finally we tried the apple cinnamon cake. We both enjoyed our meals and the cake. There was a whiskey sampler on the restaurant week menu that sounded interesting but we are not whiskey drinkers so we passed on that but I mention it in case others might want to try it. I noticed that the bar was full and this seems to be the way it is anytime we come. The atmosphere at Lucky Well is casual and relaxed great for a night out.
This was our third visit to The Lucky Well! Each visit has been on a Friday night as was our past visit. The restaurant and bar were energetic and a nice place to be after a long week. The hostess and server were both very polite and accommodating. We ordered the Hush Puppy appetizer with what I believe was a pumpkin butter...Excellent! For dinner I ordered the St. Louis Pork Ribs (Half Rack) and they were phenomenal! Very tender and flavorful. My wife ordered the chicken, which had a very good flavor (hints of sweetness), but some portions of the chicken were a touch dry to her liking.
The Lucky Well has an excellent selections of local craft beers to choose from as well!
The owner, Chad, never fails to walk the floors and check in with customers satisfaction...Great to see!
See you again soon :)
It had been about a year since we last dined at The Lucky Well. When the opened I must have gone 5 times in the first two months. This last time, however, will be my last. I will continue to search for consistently good BBQ elsewhere.
The brisket was dry and the usual "au jus" was not there to help add moisture. Smoke was good, however, the flavor was otherwise lacking.
St Louis ribs were also dry as were the wings.
I sincerely hope ours was but a one day fail and they continue to have loyal and new clientele, however, we will not count ourselves in those numbers.
Quiet lovely early dinner. Started with yummy Pumpkin Old Fashioned - like boozy pumpkin pie in a glass. Then the trout appetizer which was amazing! Especially the sliced carrot side. A WHOLE trout filleted and laid out - enormous for a starter! Then, of course, had to have my favorite wedge around. What makes this one special is the grilled red onion rings they top the crisp wedge with. Was working an event x street, hence the early dinner, so we ended the night by going back to the Lucky Well for a nightcap. Almost empty, musician had packed up but lovely bar service and great whiskey!
We live near The Lucky Well and have been rooting for its success since it opened. However, the clever décor and hip atmosphere could never overcome the badly uneven food and service. Our last visit was just that -- our last visit to this place. The hostess jammed us in elbow-to-elbow with other diners despite the fact that the room was almost empty. The specialty cocktail was overloaded with simple syrup, ruining what could have been a good combination. And the appetizers were just sad: skewer shrimp that were rubbery, tasteless, and cold, and deviled eggs that had the taste and consistency of cold yellow Play-Doh. We left. It's a shame, but the next time we eat in this building there will be a different name on the door.
We went to the Lucky Well for a birthday dinner during the weekend. Our table was ready for us right when we walked in and the first thing that I noticed was that the restaurant was decorated beautifully and was extremely clean. Our server was very nice and patient (it was hard to decide what to get!) and all of the employees that we encountered were also very nice. The meat was so perfect - it was delicious and cooked perfectly. Overall, it was a very nice restaurant and I would definitely go back there soon.
We came to Ambler for a play on a Sunday afternoon. The Lucky Well was recommended to us by a co-worker. We couldn't of been happier with the restaurant. As soon as we stepped into the restaurant we were impressed. Clean, well lit, great ambiance. We were quickly greeted at the door and taken to our table. The waiter came right over a few minutes later and warmly welcomed us. He explained all about the menu, specials and made recommendations. The drink and food orders came out very quickly. The food was great. Well presented on the plates and the taste of the BBQ was amazing. We had a great time at this restaurant and would definitely return. We just wish it was closer to south jersey.
