The Lucky Well Ratings and Reviews
My wife and I got together with one of her ex-coworkers and her husband
Unknowingly we picked a Saturday when Ambler had its X-mas Parade, so IMHO, that definitely contributed to our experience.
First off - the place was jammed to the gills and quite noisy up until the moment that the parade got close enough for folks to leave the warmth of the inside and go outside onto the street. Then it was empty and reasonably quiet, nice enough to enjoy ourselves.
Thus, (also unfortunately) our order went in during the mayhem and we never got our appetizer(Smoked Chicken + Apple Balls). The ex-worker's husband (Mike) claims that he saw it go to a different table... I can’t say the same but regardless - we never got it and it wasn't 'discovered' until we got our lunch plates.
To be fair, we got comp-ed a small version of it (about 1/2 of regular portion) which was nice, however I am sure most of the people will agree with me that you want to eat your appetizer BEFORE your main meal not with it. As it was - the taste was nice but un-inspiring (I am sure it got lost in the taste of the sandwich.... we already started eating when the server brought the appetizer)
Mike and I opted for flank steak sandwich. Again, while not bad by any means they were nothing to go gaga about (and at $17.00 - that's a bit steep to pay for an "OK" sandwich)
The ladies however raved about theirs (The Well Burger and The Sandwich (w\Brisket))
The 1/2 rack of ribs were also tasty (dry rub St. Louis Style). Fries were a bit on the overcooked side. Because 3 out of 5 dishes (not counting appetizer and FF) were quite good I gave the food 4 stars but everything else in our case merits no more than 3
Will we ever return? Perhaps;
The food and drinks were good. Service was a little slow. We were in the back room thinking it would be a little quieter but the the noise level is still loud. The band was good and enjoyable. We had a family member who is original from New Orleans, he throughly enjoyed his ribs and wings. He really liked the rib with no additional sauce.
I found this place based on reviews and preferred great barbeque so I figured I would check it out while driving through the area from Pittsburgh. The hushpuppies and slaw were memorable...the pork shoulder was fantastic but the beer list was very limited and the beef brisket was flavorless and dry. I was not completely sold on how great this place is supposed to be on its high marks of meat smoking and prep because the brisket was very dry and had almost no taste and this is a cornerstone on their menu! The price seemed to be right on most items and is al a carte.
We went to the Lucky Well on a Saturday night. The night started out great, getting a parking spot right outside the restaurant. We were greeted at the door politely and taken to our table. Inside, the restaurant was not too crowded and the noise level was no problem to hold a conversation. It was too dark inside and several diners were using their cell phones for light to read their menus. The waitress came over quickly and took our drink orders. She took our appetizer order and gave us time before taking our dinner orders. The food came out quickly and was hot. Everyone in our party had a great meal. Everything was good but the ribs were fabulous. We never felt rushed at any point and the waitress continued to bring us water even after we paid the check and just sat talking. Overall it was a great experience and we’ll definitely be going back. Well done!
Safe gluten free dining options. Well seasoned and delicious barbecued ribs and pork shoulder. The Brussel sprouts were good, but the sweet potato mash were much too sweet for our taste. More like a dessert. The menu is varied if you aren't gluten free and looking at what other diners were served, the burgers and apps looked amazing. We would go back so the evening was a success.
Great BBQ. Nice craft cocktails. A little pricy for what you get. When you order (family style), be sure to order less than you think you want. The portions are big. We have never visited without taking home a doggy bag. Service is solid. About what you would expect for a BBQ spot. If you are local, you owe it to yourself to visit at least once. Whether you go back will depend on your experience (which can vary from time to time). Avoid late dining on weekends. They have live music, which turns the place into more of a bar scene than a restaurant.
If you like dry rub BBQ you will like this place - if you don't there isn't a whole lot else on the menu. Limited menu with interesting variations..... Poblano hushpuppies were more like deep fried donut balls - not spicy at all - in fact couldn't taste any poblano in them - were sweet. Tasty but not what we expected. Wings were a bit dry. I am told the ribs were good as was the brisket sandwich. Fries were very good. Onion rings had a maple syrup glaze on them that made them taste more like funnel cake than onion rings - again not something you would expect. Vibe is definitely casual.
Found this place through OpenTable to meet up with some friends equidistant from three directions. BBQ with an upscale modern twist!! The best ribs I've found anywhere in the Philadelphia suburbs. None of us even added BBQ sauce, meaty and fall off the bone. Hush puppies awesome, and don't even get me going on the cauliflower/curry soup!...and I don't even like cauliflower! Warm towels instead of hand wipes. Long steel tables or more intimate tables, booths and a corner with couches. Most restaurants in the area can be a little pricier, but in terms of BBQ, prices were right where you'd expect them to be. Will travel an hour to eat here again! Loved it!
Favorite Spot in Ambler
You can't beat The Lucky Well for great music, fabulous cocktails and sincere service. The menu is limited but everything is always delicious. We've taken friends here on many occasions and no one is ever disappointed. The bar is usually crowded, so expect a wait. Make reservations for dinner if you want to sit down around the corner from the band. Metal stools can be a bit tiresome on your butt!
Lucky Well is a OK restaurant, nothing special. The ribs are ordinary, not the best we've ever had by any means. The BBQ pork sandwich was tasty, but would have been better if the meat was pulled more and a better bun was served. It seemed like a tasteless store brand hamburger bun. We are not in any hurry to return.
