The Local Cafe and Restaurant
At the Local, the hospitality, culinary and baking students learn in the restaurant as part of their embedded courses as well as their field placement's under the direction of our Faculty, and Chef and Restaurant Technicians.
Our menus are inspired by the international flavour profiles that represent the incredibly rich diversity of those who call Scarborough home. While sourcing locally available ingredients from the bounty of this Province, we have designed an interactive dining experience for our guests, featuring a seasonally inspired market style lunch, internationally inspired dinner menus with nightly features and a weekend brunch.
Join us in the restaurant or visit the cafe for coffee, baked goods or takeaway meals. Our students look forward to welcoming you!
Good place for dining and parking facility is availabe and close by. Good value for lunch and brunch.
The Boston Bibb salad was amazing with blueberries and pickled beets, the mussels were also very good, so was the burger.
The shoe-string fries were brown and burned. Consider switching to big chunky fries, which would be easier to make without burning, and contain less oil. The local sodas and drinks were outstanding.
Service was also very good, friendly and attentive.
I enjoyed the variety of choices in the lunch buffet. The server was extra helpful and very accommodating when my colleague who is a vegan requested to have her veggies be served without butter. That was very much appreciated! Love how my cappuccino was served - nice presentation and very pleasing to the eyes! I'd go back again soon for sure.
Local restaurant offers great service and value for the weekend buffet!
A hidden gem in our neighbourhood. The servers, chefs, etc. are all students at Centennial College, but are all learning various aspects of the hospitality industry and are very interesting to talk to. Service was quite attentive, but some allowances must be made for the fact they everyone is "learning" on the job and speed of service may not quite match high class eateries. There were four of us dining together, and we had a thoroughly enjoyable evening.
Wonderful food, lots of variety and great value! Will be back many times more
Great food experience for a quick bite or a full meal. Ingredients are always fresh and cooked to perfection.
Very helpful staff, good food and clean restaurant
The food was excellent. I am a flexitarian and prefer more vegetables.
There were so many choices and varied ones as well.
The salmon was so moist and delicious - I confess I had 2 pieces.
The quinoa was very flavourful.
The choice of having an omelette was a nice touch - my colleague had it and really enjoyed it.
The student wait staff were personable but not intrusive.
They were quick to refill water glasses and ask if we would like refills of coffee and tea.
Dessert - good choices - always lovely to have fresh fruit.
I had the apple pie and it was delicous.
My only complaint is the music and the noise due to the type of floor.
I have a little loss of hearing and with the loudness of the music and the type of floor and walls I always have difficulty hearing what my fellow dinner guests are saying.
I wonder if you could lower the music level just a little?
Overall the food in my estimation is better than before with great variety.
The food/service everything seems to be better every time I come.
Keep up the wonderful standards.
The new spring menu is spectacular!!! We loved the mussels, halibut, soup and salads.
The only comment I would have to improve would be about French fries with paired mussels; this deep fried Canadian farm staple does NOT match the delicate taste of mussels. I suggest changing it to salad, quinoa, rice, or anything else. My request to serve it with a salad was granted; thank you : )
Amazing food and service. A real gem.
Amazing food; fresh local ingredients; steak was wonderfully medium as requested, beet salad was amazing... I would prefer the fires to be more chunky, not shoe-strings, as they soak too much oil and get overdone easily. Service very friendly.
The food was great, tasty, and fresh. The service was enthusiastic (they are students, and tried hard) everyone was friendly. We were not rushed. Highly recommended!
Very good food will come back again with friends. Love it.
Overall good experience, Respectful waiter and amazing prices. Keep up the good work
Tried this restaurant for the first to take my special one on a Valentine’s Day. Had our table, so many waitresses and waiters all over the place and seems not knowing what they’re doing. I understand they’re all students and learning but for the special occasion they should be prepared. Had to call someone to give us menu for the drink or asked us what we’re ordering. It took more than an hour to get our main dish. Several waitresses and waiters kept on asking if we need anything and I kept on saying our main dishes. We didn’t like the appetizers as well. Had to ordered bread just to have something and the waiter asked me if do I want him to order that for me???? Horrible experience. Well the great thing is they did not charged us for our drinks that came after half hour. Well, what else can I say, I love eating and trying something new and this is our first time and definitely won’t come back. What I noticed is the manager did not manage the students properly and they’re all walking around and most of the time groups in one place. They’re good in removing dishes on the table that when the main dishes came we did not have the cutlery. Oh well, I just told my date that at least is for the students learning. Just wish that they were prepared and ready to handle the special occasion like the Valentines Day.
We were there for the Valentine dinner, and the food great!
The Tartar appetizer was very good, and so was the grilled fish main...
Excellent service & Delicious Food.
Students very couteous & always smiling.
Tried first time. Really enjoyed it. Will be back soon.
Great food, friedly service. You are getting a high quality meal, for a reasonanle price by contributing to the community and supporting the future generation of hospitality and culinary professionals!
Great effort by chefs and hospitality staff in training. Great ingredients, care with food preparation and presentation, amazing value, nice ambience. Would definitely go back!
We have been there many times. Love the food that was cooked by the students, especially the pastry items . Serrvice need to be better as all the servers ared standing there even the plates are empty.
Inadequate quality and selection of food items compared to previous weeks.
Went to support the students - the bread, pita and pizza were great. My son had chicken and waffles and didn’t like the waffles. The ravioli was pretty good
The shrimp appetizer was ok not great
The two desserts were wonderful
Our party really enjoy the food, even this is new for them, for sure we going will be back for more visit
Very impressed with the students. Keep up the good work.
Food was delicious and love the fact it’s a living lab where students prepare and service their customers. The restaurant atmosphere is fantastic. The students from Centennial College come from diverse backgrounds, my only recommendation would be to embrace the cuisine from their cultures and represent them in the menu. Looking forward to my next visit!
Great lunch. Lots of food choices. Everything was delicious. Will definitely go back
Food was excellent. Service was very attentive. Very eager and friendly wait staff. Food was a little cold due to buffet style of serving, but tasted really fresh and great variety. Pastries were awesome
When the server put the food on my plate, instead putting food on top of each other, they can space out on the plate, taste better that way and the presentation is very important
Amazing food. Amazing service. Amazing vibe.
Food was delicious. I can't say enough about the quality of the food. Local, delicious and great portions. Pricing is really great. Drinks are yummy.
The server's are students so you need to be prepared for the learning curve. Everyone is really attentive but errors can be made so make sure your server clearly understands you.
I like the idea for the students to practice whet they’ve learnt. If it is a training ground for them, make sure they serve in the right way. Servers more than customers. They stand around chatting.
The most amazing family brunch in Scarborough. Delicious food. Caring service.
My first time here, what a hidden gem! We went for lunch. It's a buffet, all you can it for $12.50.....WHAT? AH-Mazing! Delicious food, great variety, lovely experience. The staff are all students and eager to help. You just look up and someone is there to assist you. I am telling everyone about it! Can't wait to go back.
Fresh food. Smiling faces. Amazing!!!
Our guest said it would be better if the hot food served hot, it was a buffet style lunch...I agree with her certain dishes should be kept warm, room to improve.
The pizza & lasagne were cold plus the lasagne was very mushy & tasteless. Portions were very small, servers gave us a tablespoon of salad, 1 inch slice of pizza & small scoop of lasagne. The tea biscuits were so hard & dry they could have been used as weapons or baseballs. The dessert "selection" was 1 inch by 2 inch pieces of cake with a non descript sauce & this was supposed to be Sticky Toffee Pudding.
I know it's a buffet & you should be able to visit more than once but on our initial trip when we requested a little larger serving, the students weren't very pleased.
There were too many "workers" standing around doing nothing but talking (not in English) to each other about the patrons of the restaurant. We found this behavior very rude & not very welcoming.
I know the staff are only students of the College but being polite & having an interest in the job you're are a big part of the real world.
Feel free to pass these comments to the Local Cafe & Restaurant. They should know all of the
problems & I've only mentioned a few of the obvious ones.
I like this restaurant, the food was good, good variety and close to me. The student servers was so happy to serve us, at times it was a bit too attentative made us felt uncomfortable...we understood after all they are here to learn, wish their supervisor will relate this message to them.
