The Little Hen
Great flavors, warm bread, we had the deviled eggs, escargots, salmon and for dessert the Mille feuilles.
Would return a little later when they change the menu.
Little Hen is a welcomed addition to the Haddonfield food scene! Delicious food and outstanding service! It’s great to have a restaurant that thinks outside of the box!! It’s small and intimate and well worth if you need to book a reservation a week or two out!
My only recollection of deviled eggs is of a snack at family gatherings that somehow managed to be both dry and slimy at the same time. But my dining companion (who came from a family that could actually cook) is a fan, so I pitched in to share a plate. What a delight! If only I'd known to suggest my mom add a serving of smoked trout roe gracing the top back in the day. And a bed of piquant mustard below. And to prepare everything with the care and flair the Little Hen gives to every dish. Duck frites was delicious and tender, as were the the tournedos of beef. Roasted carrots were perfectly cooked and served with a tasty pistachio aillade. We finished off with a well balanced and generous cheese plate. Service was friendly, knowledgeable and efficient-always nice to be remembered even though it had been months since we last dined there. The Little Hen remains a real gem of French cuisine in downtown Haddonfield.
The food was good and presented nicely. Service was great. I think the restaurant lacked ventilation.
My clothes had a terrible odor on them. For most of the meal they had the front and back door were open.
As it got cooler outside, they closed the doors and I think that’s when the odors from the kitchen permeated our clothes.
Great new intimate French restaurant in the heart of downtown Haddonfield. We're big fans of sister restaurant Two Fish--so we wanted to try Little Hen. It is small--seats around 18--yet is quiet (you can hear your table mates in conversation). Very friendly service. Nice array of classic French items, from french onion soup and cheese plate to steak frites, duck and salmon. We look forward to returning. And BYOB allows for a nice red wine to accompany your meal.
We went for restaurant week and our experience was pretty good but nothing that made us feel we HAD to return. We ordered the Chicken Liver mousse and the carrots as extra dishes - both were very good, the escargot - also great, but the cheese plate was underwhelming. The Steak Frites were good but not great, the duck was the most tender I've ever eaten but lacked any real flavor and would have benefited from a sauce. The burger was far too rare for my companions taste. The service was very friendly and helpful but things were forgotten over the course of the meal (the leftovers, the coffee we ordered for dessert, the extra sauce ) and it was difficult to get our servers attention to request them so we skipped the coffee/leftovers Add the poor ventilation and It wasn't a bad experience by any means, but I was expecting to be "wow'd" and we weren't.
Restaurant week menu was too die for! Happily surprised with the serving portion. I felt I received a true taste of each dish. The service was impeccable.
excellent Frog legs and duck! Restaurant is BYOB and close to Haddondfield's Kings road brewery as well.
I had never eaten at Little Hen and decided to try it during restaurant week and I was very impressed. The escargots in a butter sauce were excellent, especially with the generous chunk of bread to dip. Steak frites were perfectly cooked. The steak was covered with seasoned butter. An almond pound cake finished the meal.
The service was quick and our server returned several times to check if the food was as ordered.
Overall Little Hen exceeded my expectations.
A great place to go with very good food and personal service. We brought friends and they also agree Great Place.
We ate here during restaurant week so the menu was limited. I had the salmon which was amazing--thick and juicy. My daughter ordered the hamburger which was also a hit but the french fries were the real hit of the meal. I don't think you can go wrong with any choice.
Lucky to have this wonderful French bistro in the heart of Haddonfield. Wonderful food and delightful staff. Highly recommend!
Average food at a high price. Ordered beef which arrived cold with one piece too tough to consume. Two pieces on the plate with nothing else for almost $30. Ok with the limited menu if execution was better.
We always love eating here.
The food is good.
The servers are always helpful and friendly.
Just always a fun night.
It was a fabulous night out. The service and food were exceptional. We will be returning.
Superb. Several new menu items, including a classic French Onion soup and a new/different cassoulet. Both were excellent. They’ve even added a bistro burger. Little Hen delivers on ALL fronts. It’s quickly become one of our absolute favorites — just like Two Fish.
Amazing food but no ventilation. Our eyes were burning from the smoke from the cooking. No exhaust fan.
Include dry cleaning and a Bottle of shampoo in your dining budget. The ventilation is so inadequate in this restaurant you will cough, tear and smell like burnt duck fat for days. The food was good but not good enough that the smoke and smell.
We will not go back.
Semi-private dining in a restaurant that seats only 18 has the feeling of a small French restaurant. Very simple décor, no tablecloths on small tables but delicious food. Roasted bone marrow, delicate pate, superb duck, good quality steak. The food is a "five".
One of the best meals we've ever had! This charming little BYOB in Haddonfield nailed every dish from start to finish. We started with the cheese board and the deviled eggs, then moved on to mains of duck frites, beef tenderloin and the cassoulet - everything was excellent. For dessert we had the pot de creme - again, excellent. Would definitely recommend!
Had a great time! They opened our bottle of wine for us. Loved the Frog Legs; it was a first and worth it. Cool experience but as previous reviews say more ventilation was needed. It was a little stuffy, but definitely worth the experience. The food was great!
The fries were extremely salty. The bone marrow was fatty.
Amazing food. Intimate and authentic dining.
The food was excellent but the open kitchen and small space with extremely poor ventilation led a very uncomfortable dining experience. The air was constantly filled with smoke to the point that hurt my wife’s eyes throughout the meal. Our clothes and hair became embedded with the smell of smoke and other cooking odors. The ventilation has been an issue since the restaurant opened and I was expecting that it would have been addressed by now. It is a shame as it takes away from the exceptional food.
In addition, it would have been nice if some bread was offered while waiting on the food to be served and a little subtle background music may help the overall dining experience.
The food is authentic French and excellent. Tiny space with a nice brief but well- thought out menu. They need to work-out some issues with lighting, kitchen sound / smoke, decor to make it a more pleasant experience. I'm all for casual dining with a minimalist atmosphere, but that's different than stark. Even a candle in a jar at the tables would help.
Had the venue been different, we most definitely would've given 5 stars. FOOD IS ABSOLUTELY OUTSTANDING and service was good, however, the building surely is not suited for a restaurant. Although small and somewhat cozy with a lot of potential, there is absolutely NO VENTILATION whatsoever in the place, and with the exposed kitchen, the space was so filled with cooking smoke etc. that my eyes were literally burning and tearing. It was VERY uncomfortable. Our hair and clothes reeked when we left the restaurant. We had to air out our wool coats for 3 days to get rid of the smell, and we had to immediately wash our hair and the washable clothes we wore. Also, the room was VERY cold -- you could feel the cold air coming from the outside wall. Such a pity. The food is AWESOME -- a true delight -- and the tiny venue has a degree of charm with a lot of potential, but the lack of ventilation and improper heating/cooling ensures we will not be returning to The Little Hen, unfortunately. Very disappointing indeed as I am STILL thinking of the fabulous meal I had last weekend.
So this is a bit of a difficult review to write. The restaurant is very small, 18 seats. The food is a 10/10. We enjoyed the chicken liver mousse, the deviled eggs, the duck , the burger and the cauliflower. Everything was outstanding. But.... as other reviews have mentioned the ventilation is very poor. I'm not an HVAC guy but in my opinion as I'm sure Little Hen has read these reviews they have had ample time to fix this problem. Honestly, I took a shower when I returned home. I know way too much info! And the clothes needed to go in the wash. As much as we enjoyed this spot we will not return until they fix this problem. Once they do, I would not hesitate to recommend!
3 of the 4 dinners were “Fabulous “, 1 was so-so. Appetizers were good. Desserts were divine. Small place, 18 seats. Everyone had fun.
The Little Hen is a French bistro in Haddonfield.
The food is great, the service very good, and the atmosphere simple, but put it all together and squint just a little at the mansard roof across the street, and for a moment you’re in Paris.
Go. You won’t regret it.
Extremely noisy, long wait with time reserved in advance, and an average food.
Service was good.
Great food poor ventilation. Good service, but the smoke in the restaurant was rough.
If you are looking for authentic French bistro food you can find it at The Little Hen. Great food. Great Service. Thank you Lauren. Chef Allen is doing a great job. The escargot were plentiful and hazelnut butter tastes better than it sounds and is a refreshing take on an old classic. Duck Friites was great. Perfectly prepared duck breast. Crispy fries would have been better (and less healthy) fried in duck fat but that is just my opinion. Liver pate was wonderful and the pot de creme for desert left us with a perfect sweet taste and desire to come back as we left.
Our server was super nice and accommodating for special dietary needs. Food was AMAZING! Can’t wait to go back!
Lovely food from appetizer to dessert. Highly recommend for any occasion.
Unbelievable! Everything was delicious and lovingly prepared! Thank you for a memorable date night!
Every meal we've had here has been outstanding. The classic bistro recipes are perfectly executed. This is French comfort food delivered at the highest level. What a wonderful addition to the Haddonfield/South Jersey dining scene.
The most delicious chicken!! Melt in your mouth. French fries are perfect. Mushroom soup! The mueille fueilles ( sp?) so delicious!! So good I wish they did brunch!!!
Excellent meal. Will definitely return.
Excellent intimate restaurant in all respects. Appetizers, entrees and deserts were all first-rate and delicious. Cassoulet and duck frites entrees were outstanding. Service is friendly and informed.
Nice evening. Food was fantastic. The only negative is the ventilation system which leaves your clothes smelling like your food. Overall though a winner.
