The Lexington is more than a restaurant, it’s an institution. Located on the corner of Lexington Parkway and Grand Avenue, this St. Paul community was the most fashionable at the turn of the 19th century. The St. Paul elite lived just blocks away and the first electric trolley brought visitors up and down Grand Avenue. The Lexington opened in 1935, after the end of prohibition, and was a popular neighborhood bar to gather and socialize. Previously operating as a speakeasy, the expansive wood panels were perfect for hiding a little booze and one can only imagine the shenanigans going on beyond the hidden staircase behind the coat check. For decades following, The Lex, as it’s called by locals and enthusiasts alike, was the place to be seen; business dealings, cocktail hours, and milestone celebrations were a regular occurrence for St. Paul socialites.

Not returning.

Sat at our table 30 minutes after reservation. With no apology.

We sat for another 15 minutes before Patrick came to talk to us.
30 minutes later those cocktails came. We chatted with a manager.
15 mins after that, our apps came.

I ordered onion soup, but brought a squash soup instead. Not great.

My steak was severely over cooked.
One steak came cold (the outside).

#NeverAgain
Service was horrid.
Meal was bad.

The lone mea culpa was 2 free appetizers that were, wait for it, awful. Never asked us what we wanted. We literally got the dry piece of cake from the display. That mea culpa was worth 6% of the $500+ bill.

I’ve never left a $0 tip before tonight.

And kitchen staff had no hair restraints, as now required by the code for St Paul.

From the moment we entered to the time we left our experience at the Lexington was outstanding. The staff ensured our every need was met. They were welcoming and very personable. The food was perfectly prepared and delicious. The chef even accommodated a special request. I have had the pleasure of dining at The Lexington my entire life, never have I been disappointed. This visit was no different. The Lexington always goes above and beyond!

For a higher end restaurant we were surprised with the service issues at our table and others around us.

Dirty plates not cleared before next course, no attention to who ordered which item and temperature issues.

A real lack of training & culinary care.

What a great place to celebrate Valentine's Day with my wife. We opened with cold oysters and some bubbly. Top notch. The pan-seared diver's scallops were the best preparation we've ever enjoyed. Grilled asparagus was an excellent side. For desert, we split the brown butter carrot cake. So good. Our server, Michael, was very knowledgeable and gracious. Ask for him by name. Keep up the great work!

The only drawback was the table we had was right next to server room and they had to squeeze past us narrow walkway between our chair and the bar. We also had a hard time hearing each other due to noise!

The service and food were impeccable. It’s pretty low key. I felt we maybe were too loud at our table...you can’t beat the atmosphere for a classy dinner.

The main courses were expensive, but delicious! The dessert.. while, beautiful.. nothing exciting. We had Baked Alaska--the fire was great.. but, the inside was frozen solid! Plus.. not extremely tasty.. and nothing exceptional Especially for $18. I saw multiple other desserts come out.. and they didn't look super either. You have such great ambiance, and food.. work on the dessert. They looked purchased from the frozen food aisle. Expensive evening.. but, great for a special occasion. I'd suggest going somewhere else for after dinner drinks or dessert.

Beautiful atmosphere. Great bar and cocktail menu. Food was okay. Salmon was dry and the crab tasted terrible. The Steak Diane was the hit of night. The grasshopper pie was terrible. A solid hunk of - I’m not even sure. Very little mint flavor.

We really enjoyed our evening with long time friends. The service was friendly, courteous and fairly prompt. . The relish tray was really nice, the salads good and the entree was delightful. The ambiance was also fun in it's own way...not too formal but special and elegant enough for a special night. And, most importantly to me, at least when we were there, quiet enough to converse with our friends.

Outstanding service from our server, Shannon. She created a lovely experience for my husband’s birthday. The entire staff who interacted with us wished my husband ‘Happy Birthday’ - appreciating the time & effort they demonstrated by reviewing my reservation notes.

Will definitely recommend to friends & family.

Ambiance and effort are excellent, but this was our second visit in a month. The first was a disaster, but we had a party of 16 and loved the ambiance so much we thought we’d give them another try. Unfortunately, the steaks weren’t cooked right (again) and the wait between courses was unbearable. I don’t like giving poor reviews, but if they can fix their kitchen to table service The Lex could be great.

We waited well over an hour for our food after it was ordered. My partner's steak arrived barely warm and his baked potato was lukewarm. When the manager asked how our food was, my partner told him the steak was not hot and the potato was lukewarm. So the food went back. A new potato was brought out - also lukewarm - and the steak that was heated up was no longer in the pink wellness range. We were offered free dessert for our long wait and cold food. We shared carrot cake and it bore no resemblance to real carrot cake. Our waiter was helpful and apologetic. However, we expected better food and prompt delivery. Our reservation was 9:00 and we got our food after 10:30.

Food was outstanding, as it was last year at this time; esp. the duck special and the dirty beans side dish. However, there was over an hour gap between the first course and the entree, with no explanation given. After complaining to the manager, we received sincere apologies and appropriate compensation.

Also, while the live jazz band was quite accomplished, and their selections quite nice, their overall performance volume made it nearly impossible to hold a conversation in the same room. Which compounded the issue with the hour+ gap between courses.

Overall, the experience this year has us questioning whether we’d be back again this time next year.

Hello Anonymous, Thank you for joining us again this year and for your feedback regarding your dining experience. I sincerely apologize that the timing of your dinner didn't meet your expectations, but am grateful that a member of the management team was available to help explain the issue. Sorry to hear you didn't enjoy the Live Jazz. We're always happy to accommodate your request for a table in any area of the restaurant if you'd like to be seated away from the music next year. Thanks again.
