The Lexington
The Lexington is more than a restaurant, it’s an institution. Located on the corner of Lexington Parkway and Grand Avenue, this St. Paul community was the most fashionable at the turn of the 19th century. The St. Paul elite lived just blocks away and the first electric trolley brought visitors up and down Grand Avenue. The Lexington opened in 1935, after the end of prohibition, and was a popular neighborhood bar to gather and socialize. Previously operating as a speakeasy, the expansive wood panels were perfect for hiding a little booze and one can only imagine the shenanigans going on beyond the hidden staircase behind the coat check. For decades following, The Lex, as it’s called by locals and enthusiasts alike, was the place to be seen; business dealings, cocktail hours, and milestone celebrations were a regular occurrence for St. Paul socialites.

Delicious food! Walleye cakes were the best I’ve ever had! The Lex never disappoints!
Great food, and attentive staff. Menu has price points for everyone. Atmosphere was calm quiet and safe.
very dissapointed in the food this time ..We were there last year and it was fabulous ..Not so much this time , sorry to say!!
Was there last night. Food was good, but service suffered. Our reservation was delayed 20-30 minutes, they had a lot of people. Service was slow- probably understaffed, they were out of many wines- and when a wine was finally available we were almost fine dinner.
I know probably Covid related- but the prices were the same premium prices so I’m holding them to the same standards they used to have.
Had the walleye cakes and smoked chicken pot pie. Delicious!!
The Lex is ALWAYS amazing. Incredible service, top notch environment and awesome food. RECOMMEND.
Service and food absolutely amazing
Reservations were easy to make through round table
We decided to have Thanksgiving dinner early as we were not going to be able to go for Thanksgiving as planned. We had a nice corner table and our servers were excellent. We all had the 3 course dinner . I opted for salmon which was delicious. So glad our last dinner outing for 4 weeks was the Lex.
Great food and knowledgeable staff. I choose the wrong wine to pair with my salmon. Waitress made her recommendation and completely enhanced the dinner.
We were told to wait while they cleaned our table, then when we were seated, the table was never cleaned, so why were we told our table was being cleaned. I feel like they just opened a extra table an gave our original table to other guests but I guess well never know. we were asked back up so they could clean it an were sat at the table closest to the front door... I assumed its because we weren't in suite an tie.... after seated they asked if we wanted a menu.... besides that the food was over the top good an drinks were perfectly made. I'll be going back the food is worth it
With Covid restrictions, get a reservation and try to go earlier than 5:30 and it shouldn't be crowded. you might even have the entire dining room to yourselves.
Wonderful spot for good food and conversation. $$$ but worth it. Cheers.
Birthday dinner for my girlfriend. It was nice, but after hearing so much about this restaurant I wasn’t overwhelmed. For the price, Not special enough for me to come back. Service was very good considering she was waiting on at 5 tables at once. Not something I would expect from a restaurant in this price range. However, she held her own and did a great job during these COVID times.
The food was very disappointing. We ordered a pasta dish and the noodles were stuck together and cold. The chicken pot pie (which is usually a favorite) was very doughy. There was considerably more crust than there was filling. The service was excellent.
Felt safe. The staff and the atmosphere I’ll send positive and happy
Service, food and experience were top notch!
Great food and ambiance. Make sure to have a reservation if you want a good table.
We love The Lex and want to support local restaurant owners. But they haven't set any time limits at tables. We had a 7:15 reservation and we requested to sit in the bar. We had to wait 25 minutes even though 2 tables had paid but were lingering before leaving. With all the restrictions on limiting seating, customers should be reminded on your website and by the host or server on time limit for a party of 4, party of 6, etc. We were disappointed the customers didn't understand this and frustrated The Lex has no policy. There isn't room to "wait safely" either.
An experience.
Felt super safe. Haven’t been out to dinner since
June. Great service. Cuisine was outstanding.
It’s amazing during the pandemic!! They have it going on!! It’s a must dine!! In 2020🙂
We were seated in the banquet room. It had a similar feel to the breakfast room at a Motel 6. Service was just ok. No one asked if we were there for a special occasion. We didn’t feel important.
Food was good. The potato soup and steak Diane were very good!
Took my boyfriend here for his birthday dinner. It was wonderful! The food, the service, everything! Will come back again and will recommend to friends!
I've had some good meals in COVID times but The Lex was the first venue that felt normal (except of course for masks and fewer tables). The 3 course special is a great value. Every course was tasty but the petite greens salad and the flourless chocolate cake were as beautiful to look at as to eat. Cocktails were strong. Servers were attentive. We were in the bar area which had a ratpack playlist, loud enough to enjoy but soft enough for conversation. My one complaint: the TVs behind the bar were in my line of sight, but I know the staff would have moved us if I had asked.
Thanks for a memorable night out!
The food was great, it was my friend birthday so she had the cake.
My husband and I love the Lexington. It's like a Wisconsin Supper Club without the relish tray and better food. The Brussel sprouts are to die for, yum. They are spicy so beware. I had the beef kabobs and my husband at the porkchop. It's the biggest pork chop I have ever seen. Needless to say we took home left overs. This is a great restaurant. Add it to your list.
Heidi was the best
All the kitchen staff overwhelmingly
Our food was ok, for the price I expected great food.
We went for Restaurant Week and were blown away! Food was amazing!
The restaurant was quite busy but we fell safe at ay time.
Great food and service! The Sancerre Sauvignon Blanc was fantastic with our meal!
The Porc chop to die for!
I liked going here before COVID and love it even more. It was a more enjoyable experience to have not as many people to navigate around or talk over.
Disappointing. Soup was barely lukewarm. Steak arrived with a sauce on it that the menu didn’t mention. Apples in apple crisp weren’t fully cooked. Service was decent, a little slow, but not the servers fault that the kitchen has issues. Really no excuse for a restaurant that charges as much as this one. Definitely won’t be back.
Fall 2020 restaurant week - $35 prix fix menu. It was a lovely experience from start to finish. We were seated right next to the fireplace. It wasn’t lit, but there were a lot of glass candle holders with real, lit candles flickering. This, with the wood paneling and white table cloths created a beautiful ambience. Our before dinner drinks, a Belvedere Gin Dirty martini & Knob Creek Manhattan were on point & there wasn’t any rush to order, etc. The drinks, food, every person we encountered were excellent. My ONLY complaint is that my food, potato soup and then the Steak Diane were only warm. I would have preferred both a bit hotter - still delicious! For dessert, we shared the flourless chocolate cake and the carrot cake - divine and the perfect end to a beautiful evening! We’ll definitely be back!
The Lexington is a very cool restaurant with 3 main dining rooms. We were there for restaurant week and had a great time with wonderful drinks, great food and service. We will be back soon!!!!
Ordered a steak medium, it was brought to the table RARE and still cold
My husband and I had our first experience at the Lexington, and they didn’t disappoint! Great drinks, great food, and great service! We will definitely be back!’
It was a great dining experience. The food was cooked to perfection!
The entrees were tastefully plated and prepared to perfection. The perfect place for date night or even if you want to be pampered.
Excellent food and service! ;)
Friday October 16th. Been going to The Lex for 30+ years. My wife and I routinely dine out 3+ nights per week. The atmosphere and low, light music was great. We sat at a table in the bar area and were routinely ignored by the staff. After our first drink, we didn’t see our server again. No mix up, this guy is just horrible at his job. Had to routinely ask the Hostess and Mgr. to find our server who was then miffed?? His attitude was poor at best after that. To punish us our food didn’t come out for 40 minutes and it was cold. So, when the bill came we tipped him ZERO! First time we’ve EVER stiffed a server. One apology and ANY gesture of kindness would have been gone a long way to making things right. This is sad really, in a pandemic, the Lex is putting its worst foot forward. We’re done paying their high prices for less than acceptable courtesy, food and service. There are other places to eat in St.Paul. Do yourselves a favor and try something besides the Lex.
