About The Leopard at des Artistes

Located in the New York landmarked Hotel Des Artistes, and surrounded by the astonishing 1920s murals by Howard Chandler Christy, THE LEOPARD at des Artistes finds its roots in the area once known as “The Kingdom of the Two Sicilies” (mid 1800s) and in the culinary traditions of the regions of Campania, Basilicata, Calabria, Apulia, Sardinia, and of course Sicily, reaching a balance between dishes based on rural elements, such as pasta, vegetables, cheese, and seafood ingredients from the Costiera.

There are still places in the city where being a happily in love gay couple somehow feels scrutinized and awkward.

We made The Leopard our place of celebration for our Valentine's Day, based on the proximity from our apartment, and the beautiful setting.
The crowd feels very stuffy, old and boring.
We enjoyed a bottle of champagne, several dishes and desert wine before we left a little disappointed.

classy, top notch service, delicious food in a beautiful dining room. The swordfish, halibut and special pasta, gnocchi, were excellent. Goerge, the Host was very warm. Valentin, our server, was a pro--attentive but not intrusive and the courses were well spaced making for wonderful evening. We will be back to try the Sunday jazz brunch.

We visited The Leopard for the first time when we first started dating, because they had a fixed price menu I knew I could afford. The food and service was so good we've gone back a number of times. The most recent time we visited for my husband birthday. Our waiter was friendly, personable, and knowledgeable. The food, again, was amazing. The salami board is a definite recommendation. Everything the waiter recommended wad a great choice. We'll be back, and I would definitely recommend The Leopard.

I was immediately impressed with the attention upon my arrival from the staff and taken to a well-located table. My friend arrived shortly thereafter and was also immediately seated.

Our waiter was attentive throughout the dinner, offered us advice when asked and, most importantly, we enjoyed our dinner of very unusual selections. It was Restaurant Week so the restaurant puts together dinner selections. I had rabbit for the first time and enjoyed it very much. The chocolate desert was scrumptious!

Pros: gorgeous interior, impeccable service.
Cons: obscenely expensive wines, even by the glass - a single glass of wine costs as much as an entree. No wonder their bar was empty at 6:30 on a Friday night.
Food was good but not great.
We had not dined here since before the change in management eight or so years ago, when it was called Cafe des Artistes. It was better then.
We won’t be returning.

I've been wanting to try this place and managed to get there the last day of restaurant week and had the option of the "Sicilian" menu for $42. It's beautiful because the murals are still in place but the restaurant has an updated, chic decor and vibe. It's a well-heeled NYC clientele but friendly, not stuffy. I thought the food was superb, and believe me, I'd love to try more. The menu is expensive however, so for me, it's got to be a pretty special occasion to go back.

The Leopard at des Artistes is a fine dining establishment. I enjoyed the ambiance of the restaurant and the service was decent. The staff did their job but were not friendly. My biggest reservations are really regarding the taste of the food and its value. My two friends and I went to the Leopard to take advantage of restaurant week, and yes, given the high prices of a la carte items, $42 for a three-course meal seems to be a steal. However, compared to other restaurants with similar pricing, I just did not find the food to be amazingly delicious. My dessert (chocolate mousse) was quite good but I found both my appetizer and main dishes to consist mainly of one taste - salt, and too much of it. I would probably not return to the Leopard for the value, and for more spectacular tasting food, I would probably go elsewhere as well.

Memories of Cafe des Artistes are probably coloring my review, but I found the new incarnation lacking. The service was excellent and the murals are still gorgeous but it lacked the warmth of its predecessor. The food was mediocre and we were very disappointed.

As usual, a very satisfying experience. This restaurant goes the extra step for Restaurant week, offering regional Italian cuisine from lesser-known Italian regions such as Sardinia. the food was delicious as well as interesting. Our service could not have been better and the Maitre d' sets a very welcoming tone. Don't miss this restaurant if you want a unique dining experience in a classic New York setting.

Can you help but compare this to it's former iteration? The murals are as beautiful, as is the service. The food is authentic Italian. But the culinary excellence that took your breath away? Not so much. This Sunday I went to Jazz brunch. The food was good, and the jazz was swinging, although we were seated in the very back of the restaurant, so we only heard the guitarist while we were checking our coats (not much of a jazz brunch for us!) But nothing elevated it to fine dining, except the prices. Now - haven't been here for dinner, so they might really shine in the evening. But the brunch was just a brunch.

We dined at The Leopard during restaurant week, and were treated to a very fine Sardinian themed meal. Excellent pasta, seafood soup and deserts, continuing the fine reputation of this longstanding favorite restaurant. The ambiance is wonderful, filled with murals from its early days when there were three studio buildings with real artists along 67th Street. There are not many vestiges of this traditional New York left. We heartily recommend.

We advised the restaurant that our reservation was on the occasion of our 50th anniversary. Unlike my experience at other restaurants, there was no gesture of kindness such as a glass of champagne, a few biscotti, a complimentary dessert...

Any small acknowledgement, however small would have been a pleasant touch.

We had one of the most uncaring, condescending waiters I have ever had. I have been in the hospitality industry for many years and the first thing you are taught is you never say “No”. This guy couldn’t wait to say it over and over. And not just to us, I could see how disgusted the people next to us were too...so angry that the manager came over...he was just as unfriendly as the waiter. Once our order was taken, you couldn’t find the waiter, even if it were to tell him he had just won the lottery. We waited almost half an hour for him to come over to our table to clear our plates and ask if we wanted dessert. I would not have ordered anything else from him by any means!

The Leopard gives it’s customers a pleasant experience from the time you walk in the door. We were greeted warmly and and made to feel welcomed like regulars.
The service was quietly efficient but not overbearing. The food was very good, well prepared, tasty and not overdone. There were four of us and each of us enjoyed
the meal and experience. We look forward to eating at the Leopard and becoming regulars.

Once the waiter found out we were ordering from restaurant week menu, he gave us the cold shoulders right away. Never checked in on us and never to be found afterwards. And to make us leave the restaurant, the coat check attendant came to our table with our coats even though we weren’t ready to leave yet. I’ve never been escorted away from a fine dining place before but I guess being the only non-white person in the restaurant does stick out of place. If you don’t want new people to come and order from the restaurant week menu, then don’t offer one. It’s very simple.

Tried the Restaurant Week Dinner course. Overall, great for value but food did not quite feel like it was cooked just before it was served. Rather, the warmth was uneven — felt that maybe the food for restaurant week prefix was pre-prepared and was just heated up prior to serving. Desserts were great.

Outstanding Italian food, service and ambience in the Lincoln Center area. Food is cooked to perfection. The staff is solicitous without being over-imposing. The wine list is just right, with excellent selections spanning a reasonable price range. Could not be happier with this terrific restaurant--the perfect place before or after an opera, a symphony or a ballet at Lincoln Center.
