Located in the New York landmarked Hotel Des Artistes, and surrounded by the astonishing 1920s murals by Howard Chandler Christy, THE LEOPARD at des Artistes finds its roots in the area once known as “The Kingdom of the Two Sicilies” (mid 1800s) and in the culinary traditions of the regions of Campania, Basilicata, Calabria, Apulia, Sardinia, and of course Sicily, reaching a balance between dishes based on rural elements, such as pasta, vegetables, cheese, and seafood ingredients from the Costiera.

I was unimpressed with the food overall. While our main courses were tasty ( I actually ordered the chicken and I NEVER order chicken in a restaurant; my son ordered the lamb which was excellent), everything else was bland and uninspired. We had a mushroom side dish that could have come out of a jar and the appetizer asparagus soup was terrible as was the amuse bouche. The service was excellent and it was very close to Lincoln Center which was a big plus. Good for pre show dinner.
Always a joy to return to this elegant restaurant and to dine amongst Howard Chandler Christy's nine historic murals in a room as lovely as Christy's nymphs. Service is professional and polished without being pretentious and the food is a testament to the gastronomic joys of Italy—though daily specials can be expensive: $54 for a whole branzino, fileted tableside (always a refined touch). In other words, ask the price. Live music at brunch complements the romantic atmosphere.
The paintings at The Leopard are the best part. The booths, patina of age, and cozy seating has been updated leaving us wishing for a time gone by. The steak at $100 (to share) looked beautiful, but was tough and not delicious. The birthday greeting on the dessert was nice, but the chef did not create a memory with the food. The service was good, but not exceptional. The entire meal was nice, but not exceptional. Oh, I take that back. The Classic Stracciatella soup was something to write home about! Sitting at the bar would be nice next time.
Could not have been happier with our dinner last night. In fact, we raised our wine glasses to a toast to our happiness! The staff was knowledgeable, attentive and accommodating, the meal was delicious, the wine pairings were perfect. The lovely murals on the wall provided a charming backdrop for a terrific evening.
I thought that the space was nice, but that was the only positive. The food was mediocre at best, the service was not attentive, and the desire to please, I thought, was low. I specifically asked for something, and I got just the opposite. Considering the cost, it was a great disappointment, and we will not return.
My mother and I ate here before we went to the opera. We had 5:15pm dinner reservations and were out by 6:40pm. They seated us immediately and had a coat check, which meant we didn't have to haul our coats and scarves to our seats. They had a nice drink menu. Our appetizers were the real standout. We had the meat and cheese plate and a buffalo mozzarella special with grilled eggplant and tomatoes. It was so delicious! My mother kept raving about the olive oil!
For our dinner, I had the pappardelle with rabbit and my mother had a pumpkin toretellini in a walnut sauce. Both dishes were nice but not memorable. I found a small bone in my dish, which turned me off to it the slightest.
For dessert we had the nutella mousse with banana gelato. Very tasty!
Our waiter was very attentive and our waters were refilled consistently. Overall, service was the standout at this restaurant. It was also quite busy right from the time it opened in the evening, so be sure to make reservations if you plan on dining here on a Saturday night.
