Brooke the host was great at getting us seated on time. The food takes a while to prepare because they clearly take time making it perfect. Service is always a bit on the slower hand. But this place is a family favorite.
The sushi here is amazing. I have a gluten allergy. Almost anything on the menu can be made gluten free. They even offer (for a small charge) to change the oil so you can have fried food as well. The cocktails are good as well. Try to make happy hour for a great value!
The best sushi. Beyond fresh and they know who caught it. Not a strip mall sushi place at all. Sit at the bar and let them create.
Extremely creative menu from up and coming culinary genius Rob Ruiz. Every dish has been exquisitely crafted. Chef Rob is a perfectionist, and it is obvious from every meal that is served on his seasonal Menu.
The food is amazing but the service is lacking. Our server forgot to enter our sushi orders twice.
First, I must say that we didn't eat here! I gave 3 stars for service and food, because I was required to rate them. We arrived earlier than our reservation and the place was empty. It was freezing and the hostess was bundled up in a big jacket. I am usually not comfortable eating with my jacket on. It was also quite dark, not typical of a sushi-type restaurant. There was awful blaring music playing, also not typical of a restaurant that serves sushi. The tables are of a dark wood, and no tablecloths. I didn't see a sushi bar, but there may have been one in another room. We decided to leave after looking at the menu and before ordering. I was really looking forward to liking the restaurant after reading the reviews and seeing the photos of the food. Perhaps during the day, when the sun is out and it is warmer, this might be a comfortable restaurant, but we will probably go elsewhere for really good sushi in a better atmosphere.
Usually an amazing experience at this restaurant. Surprising that service and food were not as good as usual this particular visit. Server was overwhelmed, forgetful and not proactive. Food was inconsistent. Again, all prior meals have been exceptional. Disappointing experience this time.
Loud, loud, loud. And louder.
Reservation for family. Table not ready, which is fine. Head to bar to ask for drink and bartender says, it’ll be a while. Nice introduction.
Spotty service, food not bad, maybe good if you like sushi but don’t like to taste the fish. Very busy rolls that overpower the flavor of the sushi. Can get sashimi tho, so there is that.
Fried chicken was decent and good option for the kids.
Otherwise not very family friendly options. Few vegetarian options for kids. Not an overall great experience.
Our server was attentive, sweet and helpful in suggestions. Even other servers were attentive. We didn’t like something and the manager (I think) cams to apologize and we said we just wanted to try it but he insisted on taking it off our check .
Food was delicious and service outstanding! We were visiting from Florida but they treated us like locals as if we dined there often!!
We were warmly greeted by the hostess, and our wonderful server was a gem . We did the price fix , every dish we chose from the each of the4 courses was incredible. Highly recommend !
The service is always excellent. They have a fireplace, which is nice for ambience. Try the water roll or the jidori chicken bites. Happy hour is great.
Had a reservation for Valentine's. Called 10 times and left messages to inquire about special menu's and cost for v day. They NEVER called me back. We arrived and found out dinner menu was $65/person, and felt like it was made up of ingredients that were left over in the kitchen. 3 courses and dessert, which they forgot to ever bring out to us. Bad experience. Charles Kenneth (speakeasy) was great down stairs. Thats it.
I've always enjoyed this restaurant, and I am thrilled now that I have experienced their happy hour. This is my 2nd happy hour in a month. It happens everyday 3:30-5:30pm. Exceptional food, and a little easier on the pocket book!
The food was amazing! Very interesting flavors and nice fusion.
Best food, best service !
Love the surf and turf roll!
I was really looking forward to trying this place out! I was disappointed when it came to the food. Fish wasn't as fresh as I would have hoped for the price, and was covered in different garnishes that were unnecessary (in my opinion).
It was my first time dining here and I will return. The service was good and friendly without being too intrusive. They helped with choosing the right food. I recommend the sushi it was delicious as well as the pork schnitzel. The drinks were very good as well and creative. The Thai curry dish was just ok the others were amazing so I would definitely return.
As always the staff and chefs go up and beyond. This is a foodie delight. Be sure and sit with the chef and let him be as creative as he wants! It won’t disappoint.
I was visiting from Arizona, and found this restaurant haphazardly. What a treat! The food was absolutely delicious and very creative. I never would have blended some of the flavors that they did, and the results were outstanding. The noise level is high, or at least it was the night I was there, which was not during the weekend. The staff was great!
Wonderful meal - as always! Love Land and Water.
The variety of food selections is terrific! Something for everyone. I go for the Sushi selections and I bring friends who generally are Sushi lovers.
All the friends I have taken have thoroughly loved the food they’ve ordered and want to return again. We are all from Orange County except for the couple I brought who is from England
Rob is a fabulous , creative chef (and conscientious owner) who believes in “clean” and organic food and ordering and presenting the best food products possible. It is very evident that he cares that his customers have a fabulous culinary experience
Service was very slow, yes they were slammed but still. Took forever to get a drink. For the money, portions were rather small. Hip happening and loud.
Our server was very helpful. The food was amazing too. My only complaint would be that we were a group of 6 and it was hard to hear what the people were saying at the other end of the table. It was a loud restaurant and I enjoy talking to the people we go with.
This restaurant is primarily sushi but offers several other options. The Butter Butter salad was amazing and the sushi was super fresh. I shared a Banana Pie slice for dessert and it was so different & yummy that you really need to save room for this tasty treat! Overall, the food was delish. My only disappointment was that we were there New Years Eve and the wait staff were less than attentive - the iced tea was warm, the glasses didn’t sparkle, we had to ask for a spoon for the chicken pot pie (which was very very good), the table was sticky, and the windows were less than clean. It’s the overall ambiance that can make or break a place but the food was great!
Every time we come to Carlsbad for a weekend, this is our must-go-to dinner spot. We love sitting at the sushi bar, ordering some ‘land’ items and then allowing the sushi chefs creative license to entertain our taste buds and fully satiate our appetites. All the chefs and service staff here are friendly, engaging and fun.
The drinks, Sushi, steak and banana dessert were excellent. The food takes a little more time to get because it is custom made but it is worth it. The chicken appetizer was below par for the rest of the meal. I'll be back again and again.
We went to Land and Water to celebrate our son’s (31yrs) birthday. I thoroughly enjoyed the sharing table set-up with many of the appetizers and the sushi menu. We had a lot of fun choosing which things we wanted to try and talking with each other. There were six of us at the table and with the sofa style bench on one side and chairs on the other, it felt like a family gathering. The cocktails were (if slightly on the costly side) scrumptious. They brought a handcrafted peppermint ice cream to our son for his birthday and enough spoons for all of us to get a taste. It was yummy, but the entire meal was yummy. I would encourage friends to go there.
While the food was good (after I poured a little red wine over my very dry schnitzle), the waitress who waited on us, seemed to be a little anxious for us to be done & gone. I had indicated on the 7:00 PM reservation that we were dining in celebration of our anniversary. The waitress never said anything about our anniversary and in fact never once even asked if we enjoyed our food or if everything was acceptable. A second waitress did give more water when my glass was close to empty. The noise level was quite high and not very conducive to talking with my wife over a drink. But that kind of thing happens, so we just yelled at each other! Since it was so loud, it seemed like out order was spread out over a considerable length of time. The ten piece Nigiri sushi platter was quite good, but the best was the pear salad (the only reason I would ever go back) which was unbelievably tasty. Overall, for the quality of the food and service, the price was substantial enough for at least a second entree or another round of drinks. Hopefully you diners out there will fare better than we did if you are brave enough to visit. Good luck!
The chefs at the sushi bar and in the kitchen never fail to deliver. As well, the waitstaff and bar stay on top of needs efficiently.
Remembering names is a plus, but it is the food that shows craftsmanship in the flavors and plating.
Always a comfort and joy to return here.
The service was not great. Very slow. Got our order wrong and undercooked our steak.
There were four of us dinning. We weren't quite sure what to expect after browsing the menu online. Surprisingly happy about the food, which was absolutely delicious! Mostly sushi, but we did have some great sliders and French fries that were the hit of the night. Also took a tour of the Speakeasy downstairs. Next trip we'll have one of their signature cocktails. Loved the history lesson! Looking forward to going back!
As always, Land and Water was amazing. The sushi plates are incredible. I love their seasonal menus it let's you have new choices. Jamie, our waitress was the best. Everything she recommended was perfect including the craft cocktails.
Had a great time with my wife in a comfortable and well presented ambiance. We would go back for sure!
Good spot for excellent suhi as well as other items on the menu. Casual dinning, friendly staff although when asked for wasabi and extra ginger we almost finished the meal before these items were brought to the table. On the other hand because we had to wait a bit for the main dishes, they brought the table excellent appetizers off the menu - a nice treat. The desserts menu was limited to 3 dishes, however the two we tried were mediocre. Overall a good experience if you don't mind noise level at a decibel so high you had to scream to be heard by your table companions.
Came to celebrate my birthday and the food quality was amazing ! Will definitely come back.
Land and Water is a step above almost all other reataurants in Carlsbad. Their combination of flavors, insanly fresh seafood, and awesome service make them one of the best restaurants in North County
Like the decor. My first dinner here was amazing. The second time around I was disappointed by the limited menu. I also don't like to see into the clothing store from the restaurant. Service was good. Will give it another try for haps hour, but not sure it will make the list for a rare night out without kids.
Excellent service. Good food. Comfortable seating.
Went here on Sunday (Oct 1) for our anniversary - they seemed to be a little short on wait staff but they were amazing anyway - they didn't let this stop their excellent food and excellent service! We always LOVE coming here and probably frequent this restaurant more than any other in San Diego or North County - thanks guys!!!
