The Kitchen @ Captain Visger House
The menu will shift weekly based on what’s seasonally and locally available. Our love of sophisticated, fresh, hand prepared cuisine is evident in the menu, which features a rotation of freshly available local produce, supplemented by the highest quality and most sustainably produced imports.
The Kitchen is founded on principles of sourcing food sustainability, supporting the local community, and maintaining a small environmental footprint. The dishes feature hearty American meals, with a strong influence from French, Italian, and Californian cuisine. The cocktail menu is creatively crafted and punctuated with regional ingredients and bold flavors.
We had a lovely dinner on the patio at the Kitchen on a wonderfully warm evening. The food was well prepared. The mushroom bruschetta appetizer was excellent. We had the Garlic scape pasta and the chicken ragu with papadella pasta were flavorful but not outstanding. The Malva pudding was quite tasty. The service was average as the server was not very attentive and had to be asked a few times for a wine chiller and water especially when there were not many diners there at the time.
Truly an enjoyable experience!! Our waiter was very knowledgeable and friendly. I would rate this the best restaurant in ABay.
Ivana the server was simply amazing. Food is the best in the North Country and we have been in the area for
Over 30 years
Everything tasted fantastic pricey but we knew it was going to be the wine however it was a great deal the scallops the Utica greens salad and that homemade desserts all amazing
We had heard good things about The Kitchen from one of the local people we met, and were very happy with our choice to have dinner there. The menu selections are creative and based on fresh, locally sourced ingredients -- healthy and delicious. I should note that the reason I described the ambiance as "quiet" is because we ate indoors due to the heat outside, while many other people opted to eat outdoors anyway, where there may have been a higher noise level. We are contemplating another trip to the area next year, and if we return, we will definitely plan to have all our dinners at The Kitchen.
We were on vacation the 1,000 islands and wanted a good dinner. We used Open Table to book our reservation. Bonus points! We were seated outside. Nice for July!
Service was very good, good explanations, checked in on us regularly. I had scallops over cauliflower puree with capers. Yum! Served on a wooden plank, nice touch. Larry had steak, sides were real mashed potatoes and also green beans ; said it was very tastey. He had a beer he enjoyed, and I had one of the best cosmopolitans ever. We both enjoyed dessert as well. The whole experience was lovely.
Absolutely best food in the North Country. Amazing.
Food was wonderful & unusual, service was fast & friendly!!! Will go back anytime I’m in the area!
Ivana was amazing!!!! We celebrated our anniversary and it was very nice. We got the ribeye and shrimp tacos. Both divine! The owner was bartending and her and our server made our experience amazing.
the food was awesome, the service was ok but didn't match the quality of the food, outdoor seating was just okay
The food was pretty good but the waitress seemed to forget about us who is just my wife and I we were dessert but ended up leaving before with served as it took so long
At first the hostess was going to sit us at a table that was to close to another table, that bothered me a little so undecided if we were going to stay we looked at menu and then decided to sit at another table and from their on our experience got alot better, we settled in and ordered in bar area and had the pleasure of conversing with the owner who also made our drinks, she was great and food and drinks great as well, when we are in alexendria bay area again we will definitely go back.
This is a charming restaurant with delicious, fresh, and healthy food and extremely nice people. We had a beet salad, a mushroom bruschetta, au gratin macaroni and white bean soup and it was all terrific.
It is a very limited menu. Portions are small. It’s ok, but I don’t think I would return.
Tranquil setting and beautiful delicious food. I cannot recommend this place enough.
Food was excellent and the staff very friendly. Recommended as an alternative to the Hubbub experienced in the rest of downtown. A quiet getaway.
Had a wonderful time. Due to the time of year menu was limited. Enjoyed her philosophy of dessert first though hubby had none of that.
The staff at The Kitchen were warm and welcoming. The ambiance is comfortable and warm. We both enjoyed our appetizers of beet salad and perch (outstanding) were great choices. Our scallop and pork belly entrees were great selections.
Before heading to the 1000 Islands I had seen good reviews for this restaurant. It also came highly recommended by a local distillery. We decided to have dinner there and arrived about 5:30pm. We were seated in the outdoor garden by our waiter, Jacob. He was wonderful, very attentive and informative. The appetizer special we ordered was one of the best things I've ever tasted! It was a seasonal squash gnocchi, just delicious! The garden seating was lovely. We were blessed with wonderful weather for the time of year, we were told. Overall a wonderful time and we will go back when we're in the area again.
Passionate owner, also the chef, and the staff were more than commendeering and alot of fun to talk to. There is definitely a personal touch to the dining experience there. Not only being personal in conversation but making sure everything was exactly to our liking. Farm to table at its best. To the point of getting herbs straight from the garden for cocktails and serving the freshest ingredients. Although a bit pricey was worth every penny for our special occasion and was a big part of what made our trip special.
Unexpectedly charming! Great service, unique choices, funky atmosphere, and quiet enough to have a conversation.
One of the few places open in Alexandria Bay on a Wednesday night, short of fast food places. Interesting salad made with beets and beet greens although expensive for Alex Bay. My wife's scallops were good but my beef tenderloin was overcooked, I ordered med rare and got medium instead, and over spiced, too much salt. The tenderloin tasted more like sirloin and had too much gristle to be tenderloin. The mashed potatoes were dry and should have had a hint of garlic and maybe some chives for flavor. The portion of vegetables (corn) had sour cream and cheese on top, so you couldn't even taste the veggie. Prices were quite high for the quality and quantity of food. The piped in music was very loud and we had to ask to have it turned down twice.
Absolutely loved the food and thoughtful touches. Excellent service. If I lived in the area I would be a regular!
I reserved a seat through open table and confirmed the reservation through a text message to restaurant.
It was Sept. 30th, 6:15, we walked in and were seated on the open back porch! It was 60 degrees! Asked if we could get a table inside and they said they were booked through the evening. They also said there is an option to choose indoor or outdoor seating (I didn't see that anywhere). Remember to specify preferred seating location when you make your reservation. They did have blankets for use on the covered porch, and it would be nice out there in warmer weather.
When our soup came a table opened up inside and they asked if we wanted to move. Yes!!
Service was good and food were good. They were down a waiter that night and the bartender served us.
All in all the rocky start to the evening smoothed out and we enjoyed ourselves.
The food was delicious and a great value. The portions were a nice amount, I felt full, but not stuffed. The service was great, very attentive but not overbearing!
We found The Ktchen to be a welcome addition into our summer rotation of dining options here in the Thousand Islands! We are picky about our food and were delighted to discover this tapas style restaurant! The food is very well prepared and the menu is good for both meat lovers and vegetarians.
Excellent every time I go there!...Each dish has unique and amazing flavors... prepared , served & presented with attention to all details.
If you like fine food in an eclectic shabby chic place, this is the spot. My beet salad was one of the best ever. The filet was perfect too. My husband had the bean soup which I plan to get next time. Here vacationing and plan to visit again.
Staff appeared disorganized. Portions small, prices high, quality average.
The menu had interesting offerings and the food was delicious. I had squash gnocchi on sautéed greens which was very tasty. The portions were perfect, too----ample, but not too much. My only complaint is about the ambiance. We ate inside as the evening was cool. The lighting in our room was not good; a ceiling fixture provided the only light in the room. Consequently, our table was dark even though the light was full blast, and our faces were in shadow. Small table lamps or candles would have made a difference.
Great food, great hosts, wonderful place to have stumbled upon during a trip to the Thousand Islands for showing one of our favorite locations to friends.
Discovered this place five days ago and have already visited twice. Can't get enough of the scallops! Utica greens were by far the best I've ever had. Perch appetizer and Burrville Cider sorbet were hits as well. Who knew so much flavor could come out of an unassuming cup of sorbet? Servers are unpretentious and knowledgeable. Part of me hopes others won't find out about this place because I don't want it to be as packed as it deserves to be. Casual atmosphere but by far the best food in town.
Start to finish the food, drinks, service and ambiance were excellent. We plan on visiting again soon.
Great food and service.
Overall the food was outstanding. We had the mushroom bruschetta, and for entrees the pasta and the shrimp tacos. Very nice watermelon/tomato palette cleanser (no charge) was served before the entrees. Pasta with meatball was outstanding. Corn, soft taco, also excellent.....wonderful breaded/diced shrimp with cabbage and creamy chipotle and avocado sauces with guac on the side. I realize this restaurant is more about quality than quantity, but there really should be 3 tacos in the entree, not 2.....would have paid more for the third. Desserts also outstanding.
Fresh ingredients make the most wonderful dishes and the chef here really hit that home. A delightful dining experience for sure.
Portions ridiculously small. Price way too high for what you received.
Menu looked great but taste did not quite live up to expections.
Throughly enjoyed! Very creative menu and couldn't be any fresher. We even saw the owner coming out to the garden to cut herbs for the kitchen! The only suggestion I would have is it would be great to have a homemade bread basket for the table and to offer a salad with the entrees. We had the arugula salad, which was superb, and a nice size. A salad 1/2 that size would be nice to be included with the entree and keep the existing salads as entree size salads, which could be offered with the perch, shrimp or a meat.
It's so nice to have something like this in Alex Bay that's quality and not just pizza and wings!!! It's quite obvious the owner has put her heart and soul into this establishment and we will definitely be back!!!
