The Kitchen @ Captain Visger House
The menu will shift weekly based on what’s seasonally and locally available. Our love of sophisticated, fresh, hand prepared cuisine is evident in the menu, which features a rotation of freshly available local produce, supplemented by the highest quality and most sustainably produced imports.
The Kitchen is founded on principles of sourcing food sustainability, supporting the local community, and maintaining a small environmental footprint. The dishes feature hearty American meals, with a strong influence from French, Italian, and Californian cuisine. The cocktail menu is creatively crafted and punctuated with regional ingredients and bold flavors.
Outstanding food. Passionate staff and owner, focused on delivering amazing food from the freshest ingredients.
Really great food. Good service and nice folks running the restaurant.
This was an absolutely outstanding dining experience, from the superior customer service to the delicious food and interesting menu. I would recommend this restaurant without any hesitation to anyone looking for an excellent culinary experience with knowledgeable and friendly staff. We were thrilled to have had the experience.
Great dinner on the porch. Nice selection of cocktails.
Awesome meal. Place needs some updating with function and decor. Friendly service staff. We experienced a fruit fly invasion which was distracting to the excellent meal. We will return.
Experience very reliable and consistent. Great food, ambience and service.
A quaint inn located steps from our hotel, service was friendly and quick; food choices were all fresh and original, combinations that were very complimentary in taste. Would definitely recommend to anyone visiting Alex Bay!!
Fabulous food, wait staff very friendly!!we will be back!
We were asked to quiet down at 945 and still had a1/2 of a bottle of wine left
This is the second time I've been to this little gem. Everything is wonderful including the seasonal changes to the menu, the attention to the smallest details in cuisine, and the wonderful atmosphere. Completely worth a drive to eat here! I hear they also run a bed & breakfast, and look forward to checking that out sometime as I can only imagine how good that must be!
Really great and unique food ... loved it. Plan to return when back in the area.
Deliver server and lovely food. Will go again. Loved it
Great spot just off the main drag in Alex Bay. We shared a number of appetizers and loved them all. The pasta dinners were all great. Don't miss the affogato it was amazing.
Had a drink, ordered home made pasta with basil pesto. It was wonderful. They brought out two huge slices of fresh tomatoes with sea salt as a side. Perfect accompaniment. My only disappointment was dessert. Ordered a fruit crumble, then found out it was gone. Oh well.
We loved The Kitchen! Food was incredible 😋 Totally recommend the beet salad. The pork chop special was amazing and the corn chowder was delicious! Hope to visit again!
We had to change our reservation time the day of and they were very accommodating. Service was very good and the food was excellent! The menu has both vegetarian and meat/fish selections with very creative food choices. From appetizers to entree we were not disappointed. The shiitake mushroom bruschetta was amazing as was the avocado toast. Homemade pasta selections also mouthwatering. Would definitely recommend!
Very unhappy with the pasta & mushrooms I ordered. Really not tasty - and I love mushrooms. Too much of a stretch combo of savory (mushrooms) & sweet (parm cheese/cream). Might be a good dish with more care & consideration. I do not/will not send food back. Desconstructed eggplant parm, meatball appetizer, special dessert all ok. Just avoid the mushroom & pasta.
Excellent food and service. Food is freshly prepared! Varied menu I enjoy a relaxing dinner—food is made to order! Our sever was a blast! Disappointing to see her return to Bulgaria 😔
Cozy fine dining experience in a beautiful setting. Everything was fresh and delicious. Staff was welcoming and friendly.
Best food in Alexandria Bay and a beautiful boat ride destination from Clayton. Loved our server Ivana!
always fresh, good selection, great wait staff. beverages are unique and tasty. prices are average for what you get.
If you like something different with unique flavors, this is a must go to. Food was excellent.
We were celebrating our 50th anniversary (all summer) and we were in 1000 Islands to visit the Castle. Dinner was great. I loved the spicy watermelon squares the waiter brought to the table when we sat down. I ordered the steak bruschetta. It was fantastic and my husband said his pork chops was great too. No room for dessert.
A very nice dining experience ... great cuisine choices, wonderful service, with a peaceful and quaint ambiance. Had an EXCELLENT rib-eye steak dinner ... cooked to perfection, and one of the tenderest and juiciest cuts of meat I've ever had! Couple that with farm fresh green beans and succulant mashed potatoes, and you've got a great mea (one of a number to choose from)l. You will not be disappointed if you go!
very good and always fresh, great service. not a large selection so it makes you try something different.
drinks nice selection. wonderful deserts.
We found this restaurant on the last night of our visit to Alexandria Bay and were sorry we would be unable to dine there again (this trip). We had read several reviews and knew exactly which offerings we wanted to try. We ordered the scallops on a bed of pureed cauliflower and the chicken ragu. Both were excellent. The wait staff was helpful and attentive. The patio and gardens were lovely. We would highly recommend The Kitchen to anyone visiting the area.
The food here is phenomenal. Whoever is behind these dishes should be awarded. Definitely a gem hidden in the thousands islands.
Absolutely! The best food we’ve had in a very long time. Delicious! Can’t wait to go back.
One of the best meals I've had in ages! The restaurant is set in a B & B (rooms on top/restaurant on the bottom). Great cocktail and wine selection. The pastas are all homemade and superb. My favorite dish - the scallops with cauliflower puree and roasted capers - delicious. Others in our group had a special steak dish, the shrimp and jicama tacos and a pasta special. The dessert cake is fabulous! We liked it so much - we went back the next night - no where else in Alexandria Bay has food this good.
Quiet and quaint place with good food. No high chairs though. We were able to bring our stroller in. As gratin Mac n cheese with meatball was delicious.
Food was exotic and excellent. Recommend the Shitake bruschetta. Outstanding
We have eaten here twice now. The food was excellent both times. I highly recommend the Utica Greens! Phenomenal.
Came for the Sunday Brunch - in particular their special French Toast.
After being seated outside , we ordered coffee and while we waited, a wind blew the adjoining table with open umbrella down on us just nearing missing my wife’s head. I put the table & umbrella back up and tighten the screw.
A young man came out and pushed the table away from us and closed the umbrella. He did not apologize or ask if we were okay! Neither did our waitress!
I ordered the special Sunday brunch French Toast and only then was told it was not available. Errr.
I ordered the Lemon Babies. Far too sweet; more like a dessert than a brunch entree.
When our waitress asked how was everything, I told her. Again, nothing - not: can I get you something else?
Then upon leaving, a sign was posted on the door: brunch cancelled due to illness. My wife, concerned, asked what happened. We were told it was precautionary so that no one would get sick. Huh? We had just eaten there. She said, oh, don’t worry; you’ll be fine. I spent the rest of the day worrying if my wife or I would get sick
And then, we get home and receive the receipt via email of the other guests that morning! We also received ours. Huh? Now I’m worried my email address is compromised.
Sorry; I’m not going back
They were able to accommodate a change in reservation quickly.
Nice starter - which was a surprise as you don't see this too often
Average wine list but heavy on chardonnay and no pinot grigio
Server - he had only been on the job four days, but we found him to be very conscientious. If he didn't know the answer, he got it for us.
Serving sizes are small. My husband had three shrimp tacos as his main. Taste was excellent, but the serving should have been four. In other words, it could have been an appetizer. As we were staying at a local Airbnb, we grabbed him a sandwich to eat later.....and he's not a big eater.
I chose the scallops and they were DELICIOUS ! However, the side was a large helping of pureed cauliflower. This to me is more suited to a fall/winter side. Cauliflower rice would have even been better. The puree was too heavy of a side for the scallops.
Most creative food in the 1000 Islands. Definitely recommended fir those who appreciate inventive cooking.
We love to make reservations at The Kitchen for our family after a day of boating on the St. Lawrence River. This time we brought a friend and she raved about it as much as we do. There are very few places in the north country try that we can get fresh, farm to table ingredients where the quality for the components of the meal speak for themselves. There is attention to every detail with vintage glassware and tableware. I simply love it here.
We had a group of 11 and were readily accommodated. No one was disappointed, food was creatively prepared and delicious. Will definitely return!
We had a lovely dinner on the patio at the Kitchen on a wonderfully warm evening. The food was well prepared. The mushroom bruschetta appetizer was excellent. We had the Garlic scape pasta and the chicken ragu with papadella pasta were flavorful but not outstanding. The Malva pudding was quite tasty. The service was average as the server was not very attentive and had to be asked a few times for a wine chiller and water especially when there were not many diners there at the time.
Truly an enjoyable experience!! Our waiter was very knowledgeable and friendly. I would rate this the best restaurant in ABay.
