   This is a fantastic place ! The food is first rate as is the wine and the dining room very comfortable. I can't praise the staff enough. Friendly and the manager very kindly drove us back to our canal boat. This place is a real gem!

   We had been to the King's Head several times before, and found it to offer excellent food and service. We decided to have a pre-Christmas get-together with friends and family, and chose to order from the Christmas menu. Sadly we found that this menu is heading down the route that many pubs are taking these days, where good hearty food is being replaced with a 40% scaled down version, compensated by fancy presentation. The trio of miniature starters would have left a Lilliputian calling in at the chippy on the way home! A tiny shot glass of cold pea soup, described on the menu as leek and garlic "hot shot", a small chunk of what can only be described as a battered oxo cube, and a small flavourless tart did not set the meal off to a good start. In complete contrast, my son ordered the pate, described on the menu as being served in a terrine, was a very large appetising piece of pate served on a slate. We all looked on in jealousy, as the difference between to two was huge! In all fairness, the main meals were ok, however an excess of root vegetables could have made way to a few more greens. The sweets however were again very disappointing. The Black Cherry trifle was more like a chocolate mousse, and the "girdle-buster" pie was a small scoop of shaped ice cream with a drizzle of caramel. The waitress explained it was called a girdle buster due to the calorie content. However, the description suggested the proper good old country pub packed pastry pie with a side of ice cream. All round, a disappointing night out as we did not get what we expected. Due to our complaints, the pub did deduct a bit . However, we didn't come out to complain or visit an art gallery - we came out to enjoy a good hearty winter meal. My advice - steer clear of the Christmas menu, unless of course you happen to be from Lilliput or Hobbiton, who happens to prefer the look of their food to the actual content.

   An excellent Sunday lunch with friends and family Good food well prepared and served by friendly staff. Nice dining area where tables are well spaced. Good value. Be sure to book in advance.

    The only disappointment I had was there was no starter I liked, whilst there was a good selection, there was not an option for the plainer diner such as prawns, or pate. However, what our party did have was delicious!
