The Kennison Ratings and Reviews
With the favorable reviews of this relatively new restaurant, I expected more. The mussel appetizer was tasty enough, but really too small a portion to share but should've been larger at $17. My bass entree was a small portion without anything special or original. The cauliflower was raw , arrived cold & tasteless. I didn't have dessert.
Whenever a Boka Group restaurant arrives, I look forward to a reservation. We chose Saturday brunch on the patio for the Kennison. My BLT benedict had a pleasantly tangy hollandaise, though the pork belly was a little lost. Service was pleasant but not necessarily attentive, as we tried to flag them down for ketchup and a knife to cut through my English muffins. (The muffins weren't bad at all, but the butter knife refused to saw its way through.) The very troubling thing was that about half a dozen yellow and wilted leaves were in my mesclun that I left on the side, which was strange as a successor to Perennial Virant and across the street from a literal farmer's market. Good cinnamon bun and solid drinks.
Had the short rib. Barely edible. Not prepared properly, almost like it was baked instead of braised. Very very tough and chewy. Salad was good and service was excellent. One other person in our party of 5 had the short rib also and didn't finish it, same opinion as me. Others in our party had the striped bass and said it was excellent.
This is the 3rd time I've been to The Kennison and it gets better every single time. The service is always 5 star but this time we had Eric and he is arguably the best waiter I've ever had. The food is always amazing but they recently added short ribs to the menu and it's outstanding. My dad pretty much gets short ribs every time he sees it on the menu and he said it's one of the best he's had. My mom tends to eat vegetarian dishes and got the Pastrami Carrots. Yes, carrots that actually smell and taste like pastrami!! They were unbelievable. Every time I've been here I get the string beans for the table and I suggest you do the same!! Can't say enough good things about this place. Will obviously be back often.
We loved this restaurant when it was Perennial Virant and are very disappointed in the new concept. We were at a table for 2 that was so close to the other tables that we could hear everything the couples on both sides of us were saying, so that pretty much ruined the experience. As Perennial Virant, it was warm and cozy--it's now cold and uninviting. While the food and service weren't bad, they don't live up to Perennial at all. Sadly, we won't be back. Too bad, it's a great location and used to be one of our favorites.
The biggest surprise was the $1 oyster happy hour and a half shell. (Clever) That is enough to get me back every night. We continued with the crudo, steak tartar, and fresh corn risotto. These were all great however it was the 4th appetizer that surprised us the most. The heirloom tomato salad had the nicest looking and tastiest tomatoes I've ever had. Which I generally wouldn't have touched because of the white anchovies. It was such a crowd pleaser that I braved it. It was the dish that will stick in my mind. It was amazing and still making my mouth water. Definitely move on to the short rib (sauce was crazy good) and the red onion jam on the stripe bass is not to be missed. Chicken was a good staple for everyone to enjoy. Great place for sharing as every plate was either perfectly portioned or easy to cut up. Let's not forget the 3 desserts we powered through. All in all - I could make this a weekly occurrence - so much I want to go back for.
We had a fantastic experience at The Kennison! The oysters, dressed with raspberry champagne mignonette, were amazing. We ordered some sharables for the table and hit on everyone of them. Meatballs, Blue Crab Fritters and the Mussels. The short rib portion was generous and braised to perfection. The pork loin and succotash was also fantastic.
The service was exceptional. We initially wanted to sit outside. After we were seated, we realized it was colder than we expected and asked to be moved inside. Some restaurants are annoyed by this, but the staff at The Kennison could not have been more accommodating.
The Kennison will be in our regular rotation.
Reservation made but table not ready, appetizers came BEFORE drinks, filet NOT cooked, what little ate of food 8 hours later horrible STOMACH PAIN luckily didn't ruin the plans of next day. Tried to support local place as a host of guests staying in hotel but should of went with an established place quite a let down. FYI bill was $300 for 4 people. Hopefully they can work towards improving their service and timing. Manager comped a round of drinks and brought fries while last plate cooked. Unfortunately guests hardly ate theirs and seemed like a bandaid. Special event recommend going elsewhere, not important day support them in getting their act together, in time maybe they can make it. Place for a cocktail if time to wait or a place to be seen.
This is absolutely my new favorite place! I dine out frequently and I could not be happier that this place opened. I've dined at the Kinnison twice nowFrom the moment the service is impeccable everybody seems to enjoy themselves and it really comes through with the service. The people are phenomenal starting from Camille the great hostess who welcomes everyone with such great energy and the servers and staff. Our first visit we had Jessica as our server and she is a gem! The entire staff is professional, attentive and so friendly. We felt like we were in someone's home! Brian the manager is great as well. Jeremy worked his tail off all night.
The food is fantastic! The oyster selection is delicious and I absolutely love the tuna tartar and risotto. We've tried the pork loin which is delicious.
The decor and patience are beautiful.
You'll love this place for the food the staff and feel like you're welcome from the moment you arrive. I'll be back often!
What a gem. We live in the neighborhood and Gemini was our only great option. Finally we have another. Food was beyond delicious and the service was extraordinary. Looking forward to our return visit so we can tackle more of the menu.
The food was pretty good and the room is attractive. The portions were small. I do not want huge portions, but I also don't want to leave hungry after a two-course meal. My husband had pasta as a main, and it was smaller than what would be served as an appetizer course at most restaurants.
What a wonderful meal we had at The Kennison . The service was spot on, nice location with outdoor dining option, and very pretty and modern. The menu is small but everything on it looks wonderful and fresh. Between the two of us we had all three raw bar items; both east and west oysters, the tuna tartar and hamachi crudo. All were as fresh and delightful as you could ever want. We then shared several small plates, and each wax wonderful. The broccolini was delicious, as well as the mussels and crab fritters. There were affordable wine options too which is a surprise in the city sometimes. Overall it was a lovely dinner out. Would highly recommend
We came here Saturday evening and we had the oysters, beet salad and hamachi outdoors before the sunset and it got cold. The service outdoors was very kind and helpful getting us seated indoors, however, our server indoors was superficial and fake about her manners towards. Lack of eye contact and just seemed to get stuff out on the tables. It made us feel a little uncomfortable. However, I do believe this manners of the staff will be ironed out over time with training and Kennison being a successful new restaurant. The food is why you go here, as it was fantastic. We had the Striped Bass and the Pastrami-Seasoned Carrots as our entrees, which were well seasoned and had a clear focus. I will come back and I believe that Kennison will have all their kinks ironed out, as most of the staff were wonderful. The bartenders were also very thoughtful and kind, as we had Float Like a Butter Fly and the Sting Like a Bee cocktails, which were both refreshing and fun. Thank you for making a night worth remembering.
My neighbor and i anxiously awaited the opening of this restaurant, for we love new places to go in the hood. And Kennison did NOT disappoint!! Excellent food, great waiter, expansive wine and drink list. I like how they opened up the restaurant with more windows. We will be back!
Our server was great! Everyone is super nice, but they are clearly still working out the kinks having only been open for four weeks. The draft beers were not available due to a broken part, which was a disappointment. The cocktails were very small, thus a little overpriced. The food portions area also very small and overpriced accordingly. Spending $140 (including 2 cocktails and tip) for two people for a neighborhood joint that has good food, but nothing special was a disappointment. No reason to return.
Great neighborhood place for good food and excellent service. The Frisée salad is over the top good. The ambience is friendly and not pretentious, but the food is fit for anyone that enjoys fine dining. The Kennison is definitely on our list of places we will try again.
Nice location and okay ambiance. Limited menu bet with something for most taste. This was our second visit. Both times service was slow. Long waits for beverages and wine and food. Food tends towards small dishes which are favorable and some such as grilled cauliflower. On the other hand, the burger was dry as was the bun. Tends to be a little pricy considering the service and portions.
