Gitano Jungle Room
Hostess was extremely rude almost didn't honor our reservation stating that they were over booked when there were several open tables.
We stopped in here for a quick bite - just to try out the drinks and see what the spot looked like. We ordered a few drinks and the Oaxacan truffle quesadillas. The drinks were pretty good , I switched my first drink (forgot what it was called but it had smokey mezcal in it) for another one (something with “Rose Proseco” ) and I loved it. I would say that I expected more for the quesadillas on the other hand. They came out and they were... cold. They didnt taste as “truffley “ and amazing as I thought they would have when they were being described to me ( containing 4 cheeses and all ). One of the waiters offered to get us some fresh ones but we were hungry so we just let it slide. Also wish they had more options on the menu (hoped for some Mexican street corn!).
The food is excellent but not enough variety wish they had a few more options that being said I would still go back to eat there it was that good!
The service was horrendous we waited 30 min for a drink then on the second round of drinks they forgot to order, The server we had was quite personable and nice but mostly unavailable .
I would go back with friends but not clients ( which is what I do on a regular basis).
The server spilled a drink on us and still charged us for it. Never checked in with us after food arrived. Seems like she was under the influence. Terrible terrible experience. Food and drinks were great!
Amazing night out! Magical ❤️
Food was pretty good but not great. Awful service. Either under staffed or insufficiently trained.
Waitress was pushy ,
They canceled my reservation because I went with my 15 year old daughter, we drive from Connecticut and they just said my daughter wasn’t allowed for dinner, i call the day before and they said she was welcome and on their page does not say that you can not admitted minors. Wasted time and money very disappointed you guys should be clear with customers
horrible service , they need to change all staff. they never pick up phone to change reservations, food is very bad
There is one lady in the bar who is always stressed and it's not nice and sometimes very rude. There was a group of friends next to me and they ordered two bottles of champagne and as she didnt have champagne glasses she offered them regular glasses, which is not ok. And to me, she was very rude saying that I have to wait for my bill as she was ver busy "she said, see, you have to wait beacause I'm very busy" she can look for other communication options about how she approach to the people.
I was looking forward to having dinner and drinks last Wednesday @ Gitano as I’d heard so many positive things about the restaurant. I took three business colleagues to 9pm dinner and despite a relaxing, palm-covered atmosphere with great music, the service was a big disappointment. It took multiple orders and at least 20+ minutes to get our first order of drinks. After she noticed us being ignored, the kind hostess finally stepped in and took our drink order. It also took forever to order dinner and it seemed like the table staff hadn’t been trained in the basics of “paying attention to a diner”. The puzzling thing was that the restaurant was never more than half full and I can’t imagine how much worse the service would have been if the Gitano had been fully booked. I’ll go one more time to see whether my bad experience was just an aberration.
Terrible service and average food...would not go again.
I brought friends from out of town to experience brunch at Gitano and regretted it terribly. We were seated outside on a gorgeous (sunny) summer day and waited 40 minutes just for water. It took another 20 minutes and multiple servers to put our food order in and our waitress cringed when asked to get a coffee and lemonade. She said both were 'mediocre' and we were better off with water. There was no toilet paper in the womens bathroom and many of the women in line for the bathroom were also complaining about their experiences. Such a bummer!
The Gitano Jungle Room has potential considering the location and decor but they would need better management and staff to make this worthwhile spending your dollars here. I was waiting for my friend to get there so I went up to check-in with the hostess and there was hardly anyone there so I stood by the front desk for a few minutes and no one showed up. I saw a girl putting candle on the tables but it wasn't until I had about 8 people behind me that she went to check us in. I was informed that I wouldn't be seated until my party got here and told to step to the side so I went to the bar and asked for the Happy Hour menu. The bar attendant told me that they didn't have one. I told her that they have it online and she went to go confirm with a manager. She came back and said that they didn't have menus for it but that she could give me the Happy Hour price. How deceptive of them to not have these menus or inform people about their Happy Hour but of course most of their guests are tourists so what do they care that they bamboozle their guests for $19 a pop!?
The drinks were OK but the food was mediocre and that is being generous. I ordered the cauliflower and it was literally a head of a cauliflower with Mole sauce on the outside. Worth the $22 price? Absolutely not. My friend ordered the fish and that was OK. The tacos sides were unimpressive and the pumpkin small plate was gross. Everything came out lukewarm and I am not surprised since the staff walks around clueless half the time and are more interested in conversations with each other than actually doing their jobs. They had three hostesses that night and one girl kept showing the other two how small her chest was by actually moving her bra cup away from her body while they looked down her shirt, how unprofessional.
They didn't have enough menus for the entire restaurant which resulted in us having to look online at their desserts. Please go have dinner somewhere else, this is def. not worth your dollars.
Guest greeting needs to be better, we went up and down a few times as no one explained that reservations were for downstairs only. Since we got there earlier we tried to get appetizers at the bar, one bartender said ok and gave us a menu but when we went to place the order another bartender stepped in to say no food until 6PM.
It’s a great place for getting drinks, listening to music, and just chilling but don’t come on an empty stomach.
The terrace on the second floor is not ready for receiving customers yet. The menu in the restaurant is good but limited and the space is really tight so waiters have trouble moving around and we got pushed around a lot.
Nothing special. Best was the guacamole appetizer.
Pretty bizarre night. We were the only people there in a huge restaurant on a weekend... then we were told the chefs were just going to “leave” so we needed to order? Haha.. insane. Will never be back. Food wasn’t good either.
Our service was terrible and the food was very disappointing.
Sunday night poor atmosphere but the eorst things was the guacamole which i used to LOVE in summer location gitano in summer 18. Chips was not good next to it and the avocados were not smashed well. Also the decoration is poor. Nothing similar to the ambiance quality like summer gitano vibe.
We went to Gitano to celebrate my best friend bday and it was simply disappointing! We only enjoyed one dish, everything else just looked good but wasn’t tasty... Slow service, although the staff was nice.
The only nice thing was the vibe and atmosphere.
Overall okay experience. The waiter took awhile to come over, so the hostess made sure we were taken care of when she noticed. She offered us guac on the house, but then the waiter put it on the bill so we had to then have it taken off as it was supposed to be complimentary. Everyone was great with making sure that we were taken care of. The food was good, and the vibe was nice.
The food was not great. The food was very salty. I am shocked this place was on a list of best mother’s day Restaurants. The waiter stuck us at a cramped table for four next to two other tables when the entire restaurant was open.
A little sceney and slightly douchey but fun. They need to get over themselves with the velvet rope and doorman when nobody has even arrived yet.
Grilled avocado, ceviche and quesadilla were stand out dishes! Service was excellent.
Amazing food and service. A lot of great drink options!
It’s a long review so TLDR: terrible experience, decent food with the worst service I ever experienced.
In the year I’ve been in New York, this place had the absolute worst service I’ve ever experienced. The food tasted alright, not bad but nothing great and DEFINITELY not worth putting up with the terrible service for. Firstly let’s discuss the ambiance, the place is dark and hot and reminiscent of a club rather than a restaurant with loud music and sub-par acoustics making it impossible to have a conversation with the people seated with you without yelling. And yes, this means everyone else is yelling too. Like I said, the food was alright - the avocado and carne-asado in particular were good. Now for the dealbreaker, the service. Appetisers came quick enough but after clearing away the appetisers it took an hour and two follow ups for the main course to arrive. When it FINALLY did, my party questioned the waiter on what took so long. He responded by saying that it’s a shared kitchen with the upper floor however a party member of mine just went up there to smoke not 5 minutes before and lo and behold, the top was empty hence the waiter blatantly lied. Next, it took another 30minutes if waiting after asking for the check for the check to come and it was a DIFFERENT server who gave it after two follow up because he could clearly sense the unhappiness in my party BUT, the worst part it unless I explicitly called him out, he would’ve just walked past me and ignored my outstretched hand. I saw, crystal clear that he saw me and yet he averted eye contact and attempted to brush past me. ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE SERVICE! Worst I’ve EVER had and I eat out every day. I don’t even normally write reviews but this place was just so bad I felt compelled to share my experience so no one suffers from the same misfortune.
I went to celebrate my BDay with my best friends. The food was really good. The waiter was really nice- super patient as we kept getting distracted on conversation. His recommendations for ordering were really helpful/good. Overall experience was great.
The host Francesco is a bad experience. (Even with regulars). The rest of the staff and are amazing. Excellent taste of food. Well done drinks. The manager and staff super nice.
The professional who assisted us was very nice. His skills are amazing and made the dinner even better. We had to wait for additional 25 minutes since the table was not ready when we arrived.
A nice restaurant with a bar area and lounge which lets you mingle with others or have a bit of a dance. The food was well done and would recommend the truffle quesadilla and churros!
Great ambiance Loud music Delicious food Lots of fun
GItano Jungle Room - great ambiance/atmosphere/decor, with absolutely terrible service. My friend was 25 minutes late to our reservation, so I sat at the bar and waited. I asked for a drink menu and they never came with the menu. For dinner, the food was average at best. the chips that came with the guac were the saltiest thing I've ever tasted. The butternet squash app was nearly inedible. The waitress screamed the dessert options @ us (maybe try menus given this place is always packed?). Disappointed. Really wanted to like.
Food just ok, starters better than mains. It’s all about the scene!
This place was crazy loud and on the corny side.
The music was far too loud to have conversations while dining with friends
We visited Gitano Jungle Room for dinner and had a great time!
First the ambiance - WOW! As soon as I walked into the dining area, it felt like I was transported into a different country! The music was lively, the decor was amazing and all the wild plants really make you feel like you're in a jungle.
Now for the food - we ordered the guacamole and it was delicious! I also liked that they had veggies to dip and not just chips. It's a healthier option than just the chips. For starters we ordered the Truffle Mushroom Quesadilla and the Calabaza (grilled butternut squash). The quesadilla was so good, the flavors were on point. The Calabaza was to die for! The flavors went so well together, with the almonds and the slices of tangerines, it was so tasty! For our entree, we shared the Carnitas, with the added Taco option - it was tender and tasty and I love that they also served lettuce to make Carnitas wraps in addition to the tortillas.
For drinks - I ordered La Paloma which was really tasty - however, for $18, it was a little much. My suggestion - get there early, go to the bar upstairs and order drinks from there for $12 before going to the main dining room (maybe they had happy hour still going on).
Service was also very good once we got inside. I would have given them 5 stars if it weren't for the door guy who was really snooty to my friends and would not let them wait at the restaurant.
I would go back to Gitano for dinner again or maybe try their brunch when the weather gets warmer.
Awesome find in SoHo!
While better guacamole can be found virtually everywhere else and the cocktails are memorable only for their price, the two Large Plate dishes we sampled, the skirt steak and especially the duck were excellent. You may feel like you need a machete getting to your table but at least it's true to its name!
