Love this place. Have been many times, but food was a little off tonight. Rice with beef stroganoff was a bit undercooked and first wine was off. Usually, a phenomenal meal but tonight underperformed.
A Sunday drive to wine country and topped off by a wonderful dinner at the Joel Palmer House. True to their reputation, they specialize in mushrooms and they are delicious, whether in a tart, in the tenderest Beef Stroganoff I have ever had, and even in the dessert. A drive well worth it!!
Creative, delicious cuisine made with passion! Chef Chris prepared a fantastic meal that focused on locally sourced ingredients, especially mushrooms which are his specialty. Each dish integrated the theme wonderfully. In addition to having a great meal, our chef was an excellent host who showed great hospitality.

I don’t want it to come across as if we had a horrible time. We had a pleasant time, but it was just that, pleasant. The experience felt monotone. The food was beautifully presented, but was lacking elsewhere. The risotto was void of acid, and really left my palate wanting more than just the richness provided. The lentils served with the Elk Ribeye were raw (yes, I know they are supposed to have bite and texture). The meat of the Ribeye itself was unrecognizable as it was completely drenched in the rich sauce that completely muted every other element of the dish. Both of the desserts were texturally unappealing although had good flavor. The highlight of the food was the gazpacho intermezzo, as it was the one item with finesse and dimension.
In all, I was not impressed with the food. The service was kind and polite, albeit without personality. Perhaps we will try it again in a different season, as I am always up for giving places a second chance.
JP House is very consistent in providing an excellent array of excellent and interesting food. The wiat staff are very well trained, courteous, and informative. We have dined there several times and it continues to be a "must go" when we are in the area. Do everyone else a favor and leave your noisy children at home.
Made the reservation weeks ahead of time for Valentines day based on reviews. We arrived and no one was there to greet us and waited five minutes to finally be seated by a person who said she would go and find our server. The table we were seated at was literally in the entry way by the entrance where we checked in, there was a curtain to separate us from the entry way. No one ever came and introduced themselves as our server and we sat for 20 minutes before someone actually poured us a glass of water and asked if we would like any bread. Again we are sitting close to the entry way and my wife was getting cold every time the door opened. Again we were going on good reviews or we would have already left. Still nobody came to ask us anything or offer a menu other than the girl who gave us bread and water and said someone would be with us soon. Another couple came in and was seated and received service immediately and we had been there for over 30 minutes by this time now. About that time some one walking by asked us if we would like the bottle of wine we brought opened and we eagerly said yes and asked if we were going to get any service or even what the menu was for the evening now we are 45 minutes in. Finally a person walked by and dropped off two menus showing what the meal that was being offered for the evening. Again the couple that arrived way after us were well on there way to great service and had there meal service started we are now over an hour in and still no server. Finally we caught someone walking by and asked if we could order we literally would have walked out at this point had we had other options. Still no server we asked the girl who was pouring water for us to take our order so we could at least eat and leave. Still over 1 1/2 hours no one came to introduce themselves as a server. The food was not good and we should have asked for our money back. This was a horrible experience with a high cost with a 18.5% gratuity added to the bill (For What?)

Had a wonderful dinner with my daughter for a birthday celebration. The service was amazing and the food was very good! We had the 3 course dinner and the portions were perfect. Would definitely recommend this restaurant to friends.
An Oregon original that always delivers. Joel Palmer House is an outstanding restaurant and their mushroom appetizers and entrees are exceptional.

This is a phenomenal spot, and a rather hidden gem. The food was absolutely incredible, the service was top notch and professional, and even though, by the time our dinner was over the restaurant had gotten busy, the chef still took the time to come out to our table to make sure our meal was satisfactory. I cannot say enough about this location, and it's only a matter of time before we're back.

This was a special family dinner to celebrate the holidays and a great experience for all of us. We had the Mushroom dinner and my only complaint was that there was too much food. I felt overwhelmed by the time dinner was through. This probably wasn't true for the men in our group, however. The service was exquisite as was the restaurant's attention to detail - heated cream with our coffee, a locally focused wine list, quiet and attentive service. We will come back again.
Old World attention to detail. Chris Czarnecki has taken his international chef experience and brought it home to Oregon. They coax intense flavors out of everyday mushrooms in so many ways. Our recommendations? Don't miss the tart and don't snack before you arrive!

The biggest problem is that it is difficult to find as the lighted sign is barely visible after dark.
Interesting food, but not a place for repeat visits.
We had a fabulous meal at the Joel Palmer house. The service was impeccable and the food was superb. We arrived nearly an hour before our reservation, but they happily accommodated us, and from start to finish our experience was outstanding. Mushrooms are a specialty here, and every dish we tried tasted divine. We will return to the Joel Palmer house - hopefully soon!
The one thing that we all wanted on the menu was not available. Very disappointed.

Christopher is an excellent chef and host for the restaurant. The Joel Palmer House is a unique restaurant and offers a very memorable dining experience. We enjoyed our meal very much and were delighted to have found this lovely restaurant located in an historical home with a 4th generation chef at it's helm! (note to Christopher: we couldn't see your sign on the corner at night - it would be much easier to find your wonderful restaurant if the sign was lit up!)
Again, a great dinner at the Joel Palmer House! I've never been disappointed here. Spent some of the time in conversation with other couples celebrating their birthdays and anniversaries. Worth the drive!

Disappointing dinner experience. Food was too fussy and mushrooms were not true stars. Soup was starchy and flavorless, beef tenderloin and elk were cooked to perfection but smothered in brown flavorless sauce. Candy cap crème brûlée was tasty. I love mushrooms and I expected to eat a lot of them instead I barely got a hint of them
The food was very, very good and the service excellent! However the added gratuity on the bill was not appreciated. That should always be up to the guest to make that decision. And that makes me not as likely to recommend it to others, as I have done in the past.

We had a wonderful experience at the Joel Palmer House as we prepare to welcome baby #2. We were greeted warmly and seated promptly for the 5 course tasting menu. The courses were paced perfectly, and interspersed with lovely amuse bouches to delight us. The restaurant is quiet but perfect for intimate conversation. The wild mushroom soup was delicious, as were the salmon and the duck breast (perfection!). What a treat!
While we had high hopes for this well-known and established restaurant, my wife and I were quite disappointed with the overall experience, especially for the money spent. Wait staff were very professional, kind and pleasant. I reserved via OpenTable and denoted we were celebrating my wife's b-day, which was never mentioned by anyone. Other than that, they were truly on top of things.
The ambiance was what we expected and were hoping for; a quiet, old-fashioned environment created from a historic Oregon home, with a rich history to it. Very lovely. Our complaint is singularly with the food itself. As a family-owned restaurant since the early 1900s (starting in Philadelphia I believe, pre-"Palmer House" days), they are now on their 4th generation chef. While I appreciate the family tradition and heritage this brings, the food we ate tasted like it came from the 1930s; dated and covered with a "wedding buffet" mushroom gravy that had us unable to differentiate between dishes.
We both realized going into this experience that mushrooms are "their thing", and so anticipated some creative expressions and interesting food pairings. Instead it seemed as if the menu hadn't changed in many decades, leaving behind many of the culinary discoveries and innovations cultivated during this time.
The big hurt, however, wasn't so much the sub-par food but rather the massive price tag attached to it. We have had some outstanding dinners for the price we paid (not to mention the overpriced house wine, another gouge). In those cases, we always leave feeling lighter and almost refreshed. At The JP House, however, we left feeling bloated and improperly nourished.
We had heard many good things about The Joel Palmer House. We have foraged for mushrooms and we were interested in trying their menu. The food and service were excellent, but not truly worthy of the expense. We were particularly surprised at the wine and coffee prices. We did it once, but can find other equally fine dining at more competitive pricing.

We come to Portland and the Willamette 2-3 times a year, and we often considered the Joel Palmer house but the mixed reviews and location always made us keep looking. This trip we spent one night in a vintage Airstream at The Vintages (which was a great way to spend a night in the Valley), and the Joel Palmer House was just down the street. We were celebrating my wife’s birthday, so we decided to splurge. Well...long story short, we shouldn’t have. Service, food and setting are stuck in the past, and everything was way overpriced. And just to be clear, we love mushrooms. The recipes and presentation haven’t been updated in years. We had a $40 2012 Brooks Reisling that was musty and for the two of us our check was $240, including the automatic 18% gratuity that was added to the check. Seriously, if you enjoy fresh, local, innovative farm to table cuisine, don’t waste your time and money. Don’t even be tempted. It really was that bad. Next time we will stick with Red Hills Market.
