The Joel Palmer House
A very nice place with good food and attentive service. But not quite at the level one would expect from a restaurant rated as one of the 100 best in America.
We ordered the stroganoff and the duck breast both meets were extremely tough, definitely not worth the price. We also had the risotto and the rice was undercooked. Extremely disappointed
Top echelon dining experience from start to finish. Service was fantastic, food was excellent, and ambiance was perfect.
The staff was attentive, very knowledgeable and helpful, and super friendly.
Each dish was fantastic. Mushroom tart, escargots, and beef tartare appetizers were awesome. The beef stroganoff lived up to the hype; the lamb was prepared perfectly and was melt in your mouth.
Everyone must have dinner here at least once in their lives!
The food was absolutely amazing. I will have dreams about the mushroom tart for days.
Wonderful service and outstanding food! Haven’t been here in quite awhile and this place has really upped their game. Well thought out tasting options. Risotto and beef stroganoff are highly recommended.
We read about The Joel Palmer House in the Wine Bible, and it did not disappoint! A wonderful and delicious journey through dinner. We can't wait to go back when we visit the Willamette Valley again.
The dishes were interesting pairings of ingredients and every course was delightful. Stroganoff and truffle-infused mouse were particularly delicious. Wonderful place--wonderful evening!
Great food and experience. Crazy great food, mushroom risotto, filet with foie gras and beef tartar were all just perfect. Amazing wine list but we just brought a great bottle from our wine tasting from the day. $25 corkage was just fine with us and the staff was fantastic from beginning to end. The Joel Palmer House is a MUST DO if you are in wine country and a foodie!
Even better than i imagined it !! Cannot wait to return, thank you!
We drive 75 miles out to Sheridan just for the mushroom tart and it just gets better. Also enjoyed talking with the wait staff.
Beautiful outdoor seating. The entire staff was amazing and on top of everything, working cohesively together as a team! Chef Chris did an amazing job. The food was outstanding and they are very supportive of gluten free sensitivities. Highly recommend! This is a great place for a nice dinner or celebrating a special occasion.
Went for a Birthday celebration. Nothing special for birthday. Food was moderate in taste but expensive. One and done.
Wonderful evening in a beautiful outdoor setting . Excellent food!
The service and food is always top notch. One of my favorite special restaurants in the Valley.
If you love mushrooms, Joel Palmer is a must. It was a nice evening and we sat out on the patio which was delightful. If you have your own wine, bring it and pay the corkage ($25). Being committed to local Oregon wine I thought their prices would be more competitive but they do have a substantial markup. This was the only negative that I had on our visit.
Other than cold coffee, this is a great concept and well delivered.
Food is superb. We dined in the lovely garden. Every course was great. Highly recommend dinner here.
Had a lovely dinner - at this time of year dining on the patio is a must! The service is amazing, food is always good, we really enjoyed the pasta with crab and the lamb chops. Kudos to the chef. Worth the splurge every few years!
Excellent food and service. A real treat.
So yummy and creative! Service a little slow, but okay if you like to linger over your meal.
OMG - so yummy and amazing spot out on the patio!! Couldn’t have picked a better place to spend our 5 year wedding anniversary! 💖🍷#mushroomemoji
A very special place. Historic and the menu was exceptional.
Everything was spectacular!!! The owner/chef even came by to visit.... the mushroom bread was a great add!!! Very professional and knowledgeable service!!! Best dining experience I had all weekend!!!! Highly recommend!!!
I have been to many fantastic restaurants all over the country and I would put The Joel Palmer House in my Top 5. Just outstanding!!!! Creative menu using the best Oregon has to offer. Diverse and approachable wine list. The mushroom course with the morels, soup and tart was perhaps the best dish I have ever had. Chef and his staff are welcoming, helpful and so friendly. Don’t miss JPH when in wine country.
We only wish we could book an anniversary visit for several years in advance! This place was TOP notch all around. We went for our honeymoon and it was the best dining experience either of us have ever had ANYwhere, ever. The service was second to none and the food was superb—take the staff recommendations! We would not have ordered the seasonal mosel appetizer, the beef stroganoff, or seasonal dessert but were so happy they compensated for our ordering inaptitude with those recommendations. We watched the chef step out to clip herbs from the garden moments before our meal arrived. The house cuvee of Pinot Noir was perfectly balanced and paired beautifully with the meal. They even gave us blankets to snuggle in on the patio! We took home a keepsake wine glass and menu and will reminisce about this experience each year on our anniversary for years to come!
Always such a wonderful dining experience! The staff is very attentive and the food absolutely amazing!
It was an awesome meal, excellent service, and all around great experience. You will not be disappointed.
Second time at this wonderful restaurant and it was just as special as the first. My reservation was at 615pm and didn’t realize there was outside seating but the wait would’ve been too long to switch so we ate in the dining room which was a little chilly and the curtains at our table really blocked the light. But those are just minor items and the food and wine were just wonderful.
My main complaint is that we arrived on time and were seated in an empty room at the worst table in the room! We were not asked our seat preference upon arrival, other than “ outside or inside”. After our wine arrived I asked our server why we’d been seated at the least desirable table ( we were nicely dressed, dress for me, sport jacket for him, unusual in uber casual Oregon) so why? We were moved to the better seat and no other guests dined in the room while we were there, so it’s not like it was reserved. The servers are friendly and enthusiastic and we appreciated the chef’s visit to inquire about our meal. Food was very good and visually pleasing. Fixed price meal of either 4 or 5 courses with 18% gratuity added, with wine it was kind of expensive and we would not have ordered dessert if it was a la carte.
Excellent staff, service and food!! Terrific dining experience on the outside patio overlooking the lawn and gardens. A nice touch for Chef Chris to visit with each table!!
Flexible staff and delicious food. We like to discover new wines there too!
We had high hopes for JPH. My wife and I were thrilled to find reservations available on our last-minute trip to Willamette Valley. When we were seated, we were the only customers inside (there were a couple of tables seated outside). We asked to see the wine list, which was promptly brought to us. It was 20 minutes before our waiter returned. The poor bread girl (who was darling) checked in on us 3 times and when we asked her if she knew who our waiter was, she said they’d be right over — it was 10 more minutes. The lackluster service continued. The sommelier never even asked to walk us through the wine list (which we saw and heard her do to literally every other table that was seated after us). We also saw her refilling others’ glasses and checking in on them multiple times during their meal. She never even said hi to us.
$65 for a 3-course meal is not outrageous, but this food was all lackluster with the exception of the appetizers and the semifreddo dessert.
It is not abnormal for us to spend over $200 on a meal for 2 - so we were not turned off by price - but we do expect good service at that price point. Maybe our experience was an anomaly because (as the waitress explained) the owner was out of town tonight. This experience left much to be desired, and given the reputation JPH has, we really could not be more disappointed.
Great concept. Great service. Super friendly and helpful wait staff. All the dishes were severely under-seasoned. Some salt and pepper would dramatically improve the experience.
Joel Palmer House should be on everyone's "Must eat there before I die" list.
Our experience was not the five star we expected, mainly based on the service. Our food was outstanding, but with all the servers, runners, sommelier and wait staff perusing our outdoor seating, we waited 15 minutes for our wine, and longer for someone to explain the menu to us (newbies for sure). Not one person told us their name. I do want to compliment the chef who arrived at the table to tell us something we had chosen from the first course was not gluten free. The filet was so tasty and cooked to my liking, but they never asked how I wanted it prepared. Lamb chops were also great, a bit more rare than preferred, but again they never asked how we wanted it prepared. The dessert course of peanut butter choc mousse was big enough to split. So delicious. Maybe a personality infusion would have allowed a five star rating.
Great food and service.
Great food, great service. Fabulous. The fillet was cooked perfectly (black & blue). Great ambiance. I highly recommend for a relaxing dinner with your significant other or also for a group celebration. Works for both.
My husband and I were staying in Dayton for our anniversary and wanted to dine at the Joel Palmer House based on many recommendations. It was fantastic! The staff were very welcoming and entertained our many questions and recommended a delicious bottle of wine. All of our food was scrumptious, and we would happily dine there again!
Amazing food and great service and presentation!
